Your Gut Will Love This Mango Lassi

Your Gut Will Love This Mango Lassi
A delicious probiotic treat from ancient India. Meet one of HUM Nutritonist, Alex Caspero’s, favorite summer treats. The mango lassi.

What Is A Lassi?

A lassi is a popular yogurt drink that’s been around for centuries in India and Pakistan. While early British travel logs from the late-1800s reacted to their first lassi as an unappealing “sour milk,” it has since come to be a well-loved treat in many countries including the US and UK. Lassis can be savory or sweet, and flavored with many different fruits and spices—though mango is perhaps the most beloved.

Nutritional Benefits of Our Mango Lassi

To make a traditional lassi, you combine whole fat yogurt, milk and sugar. We opt for low-fat yogurt in this recipe though you can use any plain flavored yogurt you like! Yogurt adds protein to the recipe making it a satiating option for breakfast, or a snack. As a bonus, yogurt is also full of gut-healthy probiotics. We sweeten with honey which has more nutrients and minerals than refined sugar. Then, we add coconut milk beverage as opposed to canned coconut milk to cut down on overall fat and calorie intake. Next, we flavor with frozen mango which adds fiber and Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 has been shown to help the immune system, metabolism and even PMS. Finally, we spice our lassi with cardamom which provides additional mineral content and aids digestion.
