After all, your sushi rolls come wrapped in it and you may even occasionally order the side of seaweed salad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is seaweed good for you?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out it\u2019s a nutritional powerhouse, and there are many different types of seaweed that you can make an even bigger part of your diet. Here\u2019s more about seaweed nutrition and why you may want to test out each type of this key ingredient, which should be a pantry staple at this point.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-main-health-benefits-of-seaweed\"><b>The Main Health Benefits of Seaweed<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeaweed is very nutrient-dense,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/author\/sarah-greenfield\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Greenfield, RD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tells me. \u201cFirst, it\u2019s incredibly rich in iodine, which supports the health of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and metabolism.\u201d She also notes that iodine is hard to find in other foods, but is abundant in seaweed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\">thyroid<\/a> health is really seaweed\u2019s claim to fame, and one serving of iodine in a seaweed salad is pretty much all your body needs, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/author\/gaby-vaca-flores\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gaby Vaca-Flores<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN, CLE, the education specialist at HUM. \u201cIn the ocean, seaweed absorbs iodine, a mineral that helps thyroid glands produce hormones,\u201d Vaca-Flores says. And there\u2019s more when it comes to thyroid health and seaweed. \u201cIn addition, seaweed contains tyrosine, an amino acid that works with iodine to make thyroid hormones,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also count on seaweed for good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a>. It\u2019s a solid source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>, which is of course important for regular movement of food through the gut, as well as blood sugar balance, Vaca-Flores says. The superfood also is key for supporting the growth of good bacteria, a win for your digestive and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-immune-system-works\/\">immune system<\/a> (much of which exists in your gut). \u201cSeaweed can help nurture the growth of good gut bacteria by providing a gut-friendly sugar called sulfated polysaccharides.\u201d says Vaca-Flores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seaweed is also a rich source of many other vitamins and minerals while being low in calories, making it a good nutrient-dense option to add to recipes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenfield <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends eating seaweed daily, or at least as often as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are six types of seaweed to look for on the shelves of your grocery store. In recent years, it\u2019s been sold in small, flavored sheets as a low-calorie snack. (Personally, I prefer to buy the larger sheets; it\u2019s cost-effective and requires less plastic packaging. Win, win!)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, a large sheet of nori contains only five calories but can boast iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/zinc-benefits\/\">zinc<\/a>, and vitamins A, C, and B12.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/q_100\/v1534952503\/Kombu_HUM_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Eat More Seaweed - WELLNEST\" class=\"wp-image-8993\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kombu\">Kombu<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider this kelp a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> miracle worker. Kombu contains the alpha-galactosidase enzyme which helps to break down heavy starches in beans. For that reason, you can actually cook your dried beans with a piece of kombu in the pot to make them easier to digest. (In other words, you\u2019ll be less gassy.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, kombu has the highest concentration of iodine among all seaweeds. Again, these levels are ideal for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hormone-health-alisa-vitti\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kombu comes in large pieces, so just cut off a piece with kitchen scissors as needed. In addition to cooking your beans with it, you can also add it when cooking soups and bone broths.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/q_100\/v1534952606\/Hijiki_HUM_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Eat More Seaweed - WELLNEST\" class=\"wp-image-8994\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hijiki\">Hijiki<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>These fine small strands are rich in iron which plays a central role in helping transport oxygen throughout our bodies and contributes to overall energy levels. Hijiki also contains more calcium than milk, meaning it can help keep bones strong. Finally, it\u2019s rich in magnesium, which can promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> and relaxation in the body. To prepare it, simply soak one part dried hijiki in three parts water for 30 minutes. (As a tip, it\u2019ll grow to be three times the size when ready.) It\u2019s also mild and sweet in flavor. Arame is rich in vitamin A, which encourages cell growth and repair. It\u2019s also packed with lignan, a powerful antioxidant with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">anti-inflammatory benefits<\/a>. Dulse is rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitamin-b12-deficiency-signs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">vitamin B12<\/a>, which makes it ideal for vegans and vegetarians. You can buy dulse in larger pieces or in small flakes as pictured above. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4461761\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study in Japan<\/a> found that a specific pigment in wakame, called fucoxanthin, can actually help the body burn stored fat. Because seaweed is also naturally low in carbs, wakame is an interesting pairing for anyone on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/keto\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">ketogenic diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To prepare your own seaweed salad at home, soak dried wakame in water for five minutes. Drain, rinse, and mix with rice vinegar, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Garnish with sesame seeds for extra crunch. Yum!<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-best-ways-to-boost-your-seaweed-intake\"><strong>The Best Ways to Boost Your Seaweed Intake<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>You can start boosting your seaweed intake by buying plain or toasted sheets of seaweed\u2014Vaca-Flores recommends looking for nori, which might be easiest to find at your local grocery store. \u201cYou can crumble a sheet of seaweed over your favorite soup, salad, rice bowl, or savory snack of choice,\u201d Vaca-Flores says.
