It&#8217;s a tradition that&#8217;s been around since prehistoric times and continues to thrive in 80 percent of countries on today. For years, experts have praised entomophagy\u2014the official term for eating bugs\u2014for its environmental benefits. After all, breeding locusts, crickets, and meal worms for food emits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2010\/aug\/01\/insects-food-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 times less methane than livestock and 300 times less nitrous oxide<\/a>.\r\n\r\nNutrition-wise, edible bugs have long boasted having lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, minerals, and vitamins. But now, a new study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison reveals how eating crickets positively impacts your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8905\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/c_scale,q_100,w_600\/v1533708086\/shutterstock_491107885_1.jpg\" alt=\"Eat Crickets for Gut Health - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\r\n<h2>Cricket Study Details<\/h2>\r\nHere&#8217;s how the study goes down.\r\n\r\nFirst, they pick twenty lucky adults to participate in the six-week trial. Half are given a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">breakfast<\/a> containing 25 grams of crickets, and the other half a non-cricket control breakfast for 14 days. Then, both groups receive a washout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> (basically, a break from the study) before returning and switching to the opposite breakfast.\r\n\r\nResearchers collect blood and stool samples before and after each trial period. Their findings?\r\n\r\nFirst, it&#8217;s worth noting that the crickets were &#8220;tolerable&#8221; at the studied dose. (Though we can only assume this refers to the physical implications and might not speak to the actual taste&#8230;) Then, it turns out eating crickets supports the growth of the friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-guide-to-choosing-the-best-probiotic-for-you\/\">probiotic<\/a> strain known as bifidobacterium animalis. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/immunology-and-microbiology\/bifidobacterium-animalis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other recent studies<\/a>, this strain was shown to provide gastrointestinal support and also boost the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-immune-system-works\/\">immune system<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThose who ate the cricket breakfast had five times as much of this healthy bacteria compared to their baseline. Impressive!\r\n\r\nThough frankly, we think we might stick with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/6\/gut-instinct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our
