Chinese Medicine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ayurveda-diet\/\">Ayurveda<\/a> practices encourage regular fasts as a way to provide mental clarity and overall wellness. Intermittent fasting shouldn\u2019t be confused with starvation or calorie restriction. It\u2019s simply shorting your time window of eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">It might be helpful to think of intermittent fasting as an eating pattern rather than a diet. With food easily accessible, we\u2019ve been programmed to eat anywhere from three-to-six times per day\u2014and that\u2019s if we\u2019re not grazing on trail mix or sipping on a green juice in between meals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Intermittent fasting sets a limited time window of eating so your body can take a break from digestion\u2014which uses a lot of energy!\u2014and instead spend dedicated energy taking care of other processes like cellular repair and fighting oxidative stress.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p4\">What are the benefits?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\">Intermittent fasting enthusiasts claim numerous benefits from increased energy and mental clarity to reducing disease risk and aiding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a>. While this trendy eating pattern may seem too good to be true, there&#8217;s research to support the benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Some of the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/10-health-benefits-of-intermittent-fasting\"><span class=\"s2\">evidence-based benefits<\/span><\/a> on intermittent fasting include:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Reducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood triglycerides, and blood pressure<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Managing blood sugar by normalizing insulin sensitivity<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Weight loss from decreased calorie intake and temporary increase in resting energy expenditure<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Improvements in degenerative brain disorders<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p4\">Lowering inflammation in the gut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p4\">Intermittent Fasting MEthods<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\">While there are several different ways to fast, there isn\u2019t research to support a superior way. The key\u2014as with any new routine\u2014is consistency. Below are some of the most popular methods of intermittent fasting. In the most popular version, you fast for 16 hours and have an eight-hour window of eating in a 24-hour time period. For example, you stop eating at 8 p.m. and eat your first meal around noon the following day.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"p4\">5-2<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\">This eating plan allows for five days of normal eating and two non-consecutive days of eating only 500 to 600 calories per day.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"p4\">Stop-Eat-Stop<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\">In this plan, you go an entire 24 hours without eating two or three times per week.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p4\">Are there negative side effects?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\">Some side effects of prolonged fasting include increased stress levels, disrupted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, headaches, and moodiness. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hangry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hanger<\/a> is real, people. It\u2019s important to listen to your body. It can set individuals up for weight gain and creating a negative relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Intermittent fasting can also be hard on your social life. If you&#8217;re committed to the consistency, what happens when you have a brunch celebration? Intermittent fasting can get in the way of life&#8217;s many celebrations, which are often centered around meals.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p4\">who it might not be for<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\">Most research on intermittent fasting has been done on men, and these results don&#8217;t automatically transfer over to women. Women have more complex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hormone-health-alisa-vitti\/\">hormone systems<\/a>. Research shows that intermittent fasting can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23382817\"><span class=\"s2\">hormone imbalances<\/span><\/a> and irregular periods in women when not done correctly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Women who are pregnant or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-breastfeeding\/\">breastfeeding<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t fast. Those who are underweight, have histories of eating disorders, have diabetes or problems with blood-sugar control, suffer from adrenal fatigue and chronic stress, have a medical condition, and take medications should <i>never<\/i>&nbsp;fast without consulting with a doctor first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">In general, it&#8217;s very important to talk with your doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet or exercise program.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p4\">Should you be intermittent fasting?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\">As with any changes you&#8217;re making to your diet and lifestyle, it\u2019s important to understand your reasons. For instance, are you looking to break through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/weight-loss-plateau\/\">weight-loss plateau<\/a>? Intermittent fasting may help you do just that, but there are other diet and lifestyle changes that have this benefit as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">If you don\u2019t have any of the conditions mentioned above and want to give intermittent fasting a try, here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting-myths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some questions to consider<\/a>. Is it a sustainable way of eating for you? Does it interfere with your social life? How does it actually make you feel? Do you enjoy it and can you create a lifestyle around it? Different eating patterns work for different people. If you think intermittent fasting is the way to go, I recommend starting out slow with a 12-hour fast once or twice per week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Just remember: There&#8217;s no one-size-fits-all plan when it comes to diet and lifestyle.
