Here&#8217;s a closer look.<\/em>\r\n\r\nSure, vegans wonder about this often, but meanwhile, omnivores might take this question for granted.\r\n\r\nHere&#8217;s why it&#8217;s an important one to ask, plus what happens when you get too little (or too much) protein.\r\n<h2>Why is protein so important?<\/h2>\r\n&#8220;A lot of things in our body are made of protein. If you don&#8217;t get enough of it in your diet, your body will break down muscles to get it,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/author\/sarah-greenfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarah Greenfield, RD, CSSD<\/a>.\r\n\r\nA consistent lack of protein in your diet can lead to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>brittle hair<\/li>\r\n \t<li>dull + dry skin<\/li>\r\n \t<li>fatigue<\/li>\r\n \t<li>stress + low mood<\/li>\r\n \t<li>low sex drive<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nA side effect of lacking protein can also lead to constant cravings. Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> and fat, protein is crucial to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stabilize blood sugar<\/a>.\r\n\r\nOn the flip side, too <em>much<\/em> protein can become acidic in your body and put additional strain on your kidneys. This essentially inhibits your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-detox-foods\/\">detox<\/a> pathways. Of course, that&#8217;s no good, either!\r\n\r\nSo how much protein is just right?\r\n<h2>How much protein do we need each day?<\/h2>\r\nThe exact formula for how much protein you need in a day is, at minimum, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26797090\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">0.8 grams of protein<\/a> per kilogram of body weight.\r\n\r\nThe simplified version is this: half of your body weight in pounds is equal to the number of grams of protein you need each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need 75 grams of protein per day.\r\n\r\nTo continue our example further, here&#8217;s what that 75 grams of protein might look like in a day:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>2 eggs = 12 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1 cup cooked lentils = 18 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1 chicken breast = 27 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1 oz almonds = 6 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1\/2 cup cooked quinoa = 4 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1 cup kale = 3 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1\/2 cup cooked spinach = 3 grams<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1\/4 avocado = 1 gram<\/li>\r\n \t<li>1\/2 cup broccoli = 1 gram<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8481\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/q_100\/v1528911496\/Complete_Protein_Snack_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"6 Toasts topped with fruit for a complete protein snack\" width=\"600\" height=\"431\" \/>\r\n<h2>What is a complete protein?<\/h2>\r\n&#8220;Protein is made of strings of amino acid,&#8221; Sarah explains. &#8220;There are two kinds: essential and non-essential. Non-essential amino acids are the ones your body makes. Essential amino acids are the ones we need to get from our diet. A complete protein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-protein-powder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contains all the essential amino acids<\/a>.&#8221;\r\n\r\nAnimal based proteins are convenient for this reason, as they naturally contain all the essential amino acids we need.\r\n\r\n&#8220;For omnivores, I recommend lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish, and eggs,&#8221; Sarah shares. She recommends avoiding low-quality, inexpensive protein. The meat in fast food, for example, is going to have a different fat ratio, which can potentially lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a>.\r\n<h2>How about Plant-based protein?<\/h2>\r\nSarah assures us that vegans and vegetarians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/plant-based-diet-myths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can get adequate sources of complete protein<\/a> in their diets, as well.\r\n\r\nQuinoa and goji berries each have all the essential acids on their own.
