But there might be a not so sweet side to this artificial sweetener. <a href=\"https:\/\/nourishedbynutrition.com\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica Kelley<\/span><\/a>, MS, RD covers what you need to know about this popular sweetener.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p4\">What is aspartame?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in many \u201csugar-free\u201d or \u201cdiet\u201d food products.<\/p>\nAspartame contains four calories per gram, which is already lower than the 15 calories per gram in sugar. As an added bonus to manufacturers, Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar so manufacturers can use a much smaller amount to get the desired taste.\n<h2 class=\"p4\">What is aspartame used in?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">Diet soda is one of the most popular beverages that contains aspartame. It is, in fact, the most popular artificial sweetener used in the diet food industry and used in more than 6,000 foods, beverages and pharmaceutical products on the market. These foods are typically marketed as \u201clight\u201d \u201csugar-free\u201d or \u201cdiet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Other common foods with aspartame include: diet beverages, sugar-free fruit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/is-juice-healthy\/\"><span class=\"s3\">juices,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0flavored coffee syrups, flavored water, sports drinks, chewing gums, sugar-free breath mints, canned fruits, cereals, yogurt, sugar-free desserts,\u00a0low-sugar condiments, maple syrup, fruit spreads, jelly, jam, chocolate syrup, ketchup, tabletop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-and-worst-sweeteners\/\">sweeteners<\/a>,\u00a0<span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">meal replacement shakes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\">\/snacks, cough drops, and cough medicine.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8411\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/q_100\/v1527704642\/Aspartame_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Aspartame - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/>\n<h2>Is it safe to eat?<\/h2>\nThe ingredients in aspartame are aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Both are naturally occurring amino acids. We produce aspartic acid in the body and get phenylalanine through high-protein foods like meat, fish, chicken, eggs, beans, and nuts. In processing aspartame, the body breaks it down into methanol, which in large quantities is considered toxic. However, this amount is nearly impossible to reach and is why the FDA considers aspartame to be safe for consumption.\n\nThe FDA set Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels for each artificial sweetener. The ADI for aspartame is 50mg\/kg BW. This means for a 150-pound individual it is considered safe to consume 17 cans of 12-ounce diet soda or 97 packets of artificial sweetener containing aspartame each day.\n<h2 class=\"p4\">So what&#8217;s the controversy about?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">For the reasons listed above, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/ingredientspackaginglabeling\/foodadditivesingredients\/ucm397725.htm#Steviol_glycosides\"><span class=\"s1\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a> (FDA) approves of aspartame as a safe general-purpose sweetener. It&#8217;s the most extensively researched artificial sweetener, with more than 100 studies supporting its safety. To date studies have found no clear evidence that aspartame causes cancer or other serious health problems in humans and therefore is safe for consumption. However, advocate groups disagree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) indicates most studies done on aspartame were industry-funded, and three larger, independently funded studies found links to cancer. While they argue this is enough to ban aspartame, the study results were only observed in animals. Aside from cancer claims, the CSPI references numerous studies that suggest adverse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/article\/aspartame-nutrasweet\"><span class=\"s1\">side effects<\/span><\/a> such as headaches, brain fog, dizziness, and gastrointestinal distress.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8400\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/q_100\/v1527693737\/Aspartame_for_Weight_Loss_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Asparatame and Weight Loss - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<h2>What if we&#8217;re trying to lose weight?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">Most people use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/artificial-sweeteners-and-gut-health\/\">artificial sweeteners<\/a> to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/effects-of-sugar\/\">sugar<\/a> and help with their weight-loss goals. Indeed, some studies show that replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners can reduce total calorie consumption and therefore help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a>. However, some studies now show that artificial sweeteners can actually have a native effect on your weight loss effort and even cause weight gain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Research shows this may happen because of a few reasons. First, when you eat something sweet, your brain expects energy. But when you consume artificial sweeteners, your brain doesn\u2019t get that burst of energy, which results in more cravings. In some cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2013\/09\/24\/why-your-brain-isnt-fooled-by-sugar-stand-ins\/\"><span class=\"s1\">you even end up consuming excess calories<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Then, because artificial sweeteners are sweeter than sugar, if you use them regularly, you may become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/healthy-eating\/ask-the-doctor-are-artificial-sweeteners-a-good-alternative-to-sugar\"><span class=\"s1\">desensitized<\/span><\/a> to sweetness. That means foods with natural sweetness don\u2019t taste sweet to your tastebuds and become less appetizing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Finally, we all know the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/harvard-probiotics-symposium\/\">gut health<\/a>. Research is indicating that artificial sweeteners can change the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25440050\"><span class=\"s1\">gut bacteria<\/span><\/a> and cause an increased risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature13793\"><span class=\"s1\">weight gain<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It&#8217;s important to note that individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), a condition where individuals cannot properly process phenylalanine, must avoid aspartame and other foods high in phenylalanine to avoid toxicity. Don\u2019t be alarmed: it&#8217;s a rare genetic disorder and is diagnosed at birth.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"p3\">What natural alternatives should we seek out instead?<\/h2>\nReally, the best thing you can do for your health is to cut back on excess sugar in general. Over time, our taste buds adjust and we taste sweetness at a lower level, meaning we don\u2019t have to consume as much. When possible, opt for the most natural sources of sweetener such as fruit, maple syrup, and honey. If you&#8217;re looking for a calorie-free option, natural sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit are your best options.\n<div  class=\"products-block -mx-4 md:mx-0 my-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<a
