I love my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/30-plants-per-week\/\">veggies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/rd-meal-prep\/\">meal prep<\/a> weekly, and watch my sugar intake. Every once in a while though, the craving hits for something less wholesome. I then find myself grabbing a pre-packaged, processed snack from the grocery store and shrug it off as a cheat day. Obviously these indulgences aren&#8217;t the cleanest fuel for my body, but everything in moderation&#8230; right?\r\n\r\nI&#8217;m feeling less sure of that after some research, the most concerning evidence being that several food additives commonly used in the U.S. are illegal in other countries. Yikes.\r\n\r\nHere are some of the worst offenders\u00a0that have me thinking twice before picking up a processed snack again.\r\n<h2>Food Additives To Avoid<\/h2>\r\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6840\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/v1507053115\/Brominated_Vegetable_Oil_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Brominated Vegetable Oil - Food Additives - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/>Brominated Vegetable Oil<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Found in: <\/strong>Sodas and sports drinks\r\n<strong>Banned in:\u00a0<\/strong>Japan and Europe\r\n\r\n<strong>Why you want to avoid it: <\/strong>Originally patented as a flame retardant, this substance bioaccumulates in the body. Doctors have seen cases of skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve disorders in excessive soda drinkers. Further research links it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\">thyroid<\/a> problems and reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitex-for-fertility\/\">fertility<\/a>.\r\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6841\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/v1507053233\/Olestra_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Olestra Olean - Food Additives - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>Olestra or Olean<\/h2>\r\n<strong>Found in:<\/strong>\u00a0Fat-free potato chips\r\n<strong>Banned in:\u00a0<\/strong>Canada and Europe\r\n\r\n<strong>Why you want to avoid it:<\/strong> This additive is so bad it made Time magazine&#8217;s list of <a href=\"https:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,1991915_1991909_1991785,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The 50 Worst Inventions<\/a>. Olestra prevents the body from absorbing essential vitamins and can result in cramps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\">gas<\/a>, and loose bowels. In fact, the main symptom associated with olestra is anal leakage. Recombinant bovine growth hormone is given to cows to increase their milk production, but leaves them susceptible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforfoodsafety.org\/issues\/1044\/rbgh\/about-rbgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">udder infections and reproductive issues<\/a>. Then, in humans, it can raise the level of insulin-like growth factor-1 or IFG-1. A few chain restaurants have since removed it from their ingredients, but you&#8217;ll still find it in many grocery-store products.\r\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6844\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/hum-nutrition-inc\/image\/upload\/v1507054203\/Artificial_Dyes_HUM_Nutrition_Blog.jpg\" alt=\"Artificial Dyes - Food Additives - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>Artificial Dyes<\/h2>\r\n<strong>Found in: <\/strong>Cereals, candy, and much more<strong>\r\nBanned in:\u00a0<\/strong>Norway, Finland, and Austria\r\n\r\n<strong>Why you want to avoid it: <\/strong>Different colors have been linked to different adverse effects. One study found that yellow 5 and yellow 6 can result in increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17825405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hyperactivity<\/a> in children. The FDA issued a warning to have blue 1 removed from tube feedings in a clinical study because it was linked with low blood pressure and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/ForIndustry\/ColorAdditives\/ColorAdditivesinSpecificProducts\/InMedicalDevices\/ucm142395.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shutting down bodily functions<\/a> in patients.
