My mind was so focused on my career and expanding as a practitioner that I was totally caught off guard.\n\nBut in that same moment, I felt connected to this little life I had inside my body, which made me feel more empowered than ever. Always follow guidance from your OB-GYN and\/or primary care physician.<\/em>\n<h2>6 HEALTHY Pregnancy Tips FROM A DIETITIAN<\/h2>\nAs a dietitian and poop aficionado, I wanted to make sure I did as much as possible to create a healthy foundation for myself and my child. I approached this new journey in the same way I approach creating a healthy foundation for my clients in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fearlessfig.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my private practice<\/a>.\n\nAbove all, I focused on:\n<ol>\n \t<li>decreasing toxic burden<\/li>\n \t<li>optimizing digestive health<\/li>\n \t<li>eating whole foods<\/li>\n \t<li>taking the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-and-supplements-should-i-take\/\">supplements<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>managing stress<\/li>\n \t<li>incorporating movement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nSo let&#8217;s look at each of these areas and see how you can build your own healthy foundation with smart pregnancy advice.\n<h3>1. Decrease Toxic Burden<\/h3>\nOur world is full of toxins. But fortunately, our bodies have many amazing systems in place to filter them out.\n\nHowever, when you&#8217;re pregnant, your baby is more susceptible to toxins because they&#8217;re able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3314990\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cross the blood-brain barrier<\/a>\u2014something we have protection from as adults.\n\nThe best place to start is by removing toxic products from your environment, such as:\n<ul>\n \t<li>nail polish<\/li>\n \t<li>hair dye<\/li>\n \t<li>beauty products (check the toxicity status on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/skindeep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EWG<\/a>)<\/li>\n \t<li>cleaning products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nEspecially during pregnancy, my advice is to upgrade these to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/clean-skincare-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthier, cleaner alternatives<\/a>. Optimize Digestive Health<\/h3>\nSince immunity begins in the gut, having a healthy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/microbiome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diverse microbiome<\/a> was a top priority for me when I was pregnant.\n\nTo begin, eating a diverse diet with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/eat-the-rainbow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lots of colors<\/a> can help feed different bacteria in the gut. Aim for 40 different whole foods per week and include lots of good fermented foods.\n\nSome of my favorite fermented foods to eat daily were:\n<ul>\n \t<li>coconut yogurt<\/li>\n \t<li>sauerkraut<\/li>\n \t<li>pickles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/which-hum-probiotic-should-i-take\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">daily probiotic<\/a> can also help improve digestive health.\n\nNext, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-relieve-constipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">constipation is common<\/a> during pregnancy, as our hormones shift and change frequently. Increased levels of progesterone slow motility and can cause constipation. Thankfully, prioritizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a> can help combat this digestive issue naturally.\n<h3>3. Eating Whole Foods<\/h3>\nA balanced diet helps stabilize blood sugar levels and optimizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a>.\n\nIt&#8217;s important to remember that your body only requires about an additional 200 to 300 calories while you&#8217;re pregnant. (Read: the idea of \u201ceating for two\u201d is dated.) However, if you plan to breastfeed, you&#8217;ll need to eat around 500 additional calories per day.\n\nNext, between weeks 24 to 28 of your pregnancy, you&#8217;ll need to get more thorough blood sugar tests to rule out potential red flags. But again, all the while, eating balanced meals will help keep blood sugar levels stable.\n\nMake sure each meal contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>, fat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, and veggies. This balanced plate can help stabilize any blood sugar spikes and support your growing baby.\n\nIn addition, try to keep processed foods to a minimum. Also avoid deli meats, sushi, and high-mercury fish like tuna and swordfish.\n\n<img data-dominant-color=\"8f7568\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8f7568;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22415 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Pregnancy-Advice-Take-the-Right-Supplements-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Pregnant woman taking supplements while standing at work\" width=\"770\" height=\"484\">\n<h3>4. Take the Right Supplements<\/h3>\nWhen you&#8217;re pregnant, you want to be conservative with the amount of supplements you&#8217;re taking.\n\nHowever, it&#8217;s essential to find a high-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-in-prenatal-vitamins\/\">prenatal<\/a> supplement. I always looked for one that had methylated B vitamins and iron (in the bisglycinate form to help prevent constipation).\n\nIt&#8217;s also important to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/4\/omg-omega-the-great\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-quality fish oil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-deficiency-what-you-should-know\/\">vitamin D<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-guide-to-choosing-the-best-probiotic-for-you\/\">probiotics<\/a>.\n<h3>5. Manage Stress<\/h3>\nFollowing this pregnancy tip is absolutely essential. Stress isn&#8217;t just a state of being; it&#8217;s also a physiological response that changes your body chemistry.\n\nIn fact, stress changes the way we process sugar. It causes our bodies to store more fat, decreases the diversity of the microbiome, and can promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a>. High levels of stress during pregnancy can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4447112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decrease the baby&#8217;s birth weight and potentially cause early labor<\/a>.\n\nThe key to stress management is to find activities that you enjoy. If you don&#8217;t enjoy meditating, don\u2019t force yourself to do it! (Though personally, I loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p39afBUYk7c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this guided pregnancy mediation<\/a> and would do it in the morning before I started my day.)\n\nInstead, try:\n<ul>\n \t<li>coloring<\/li>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-walking-daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walking in nature<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>creating boundaries around things\/people that cause stress<\/li>\n \t<li>warm (not hot) baths<\/li>\n \t<li>essential oil diffusers<\/li>\n \t<li>putting your hand on your belly and breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"65695f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #65695f;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22416 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Exercise-for-Pregnant-Women-Advice-from-a-Dietitian-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Pregnant woman doing yoga and Pilates at home to incorporate movement as part of her healthy pregnancy regimen\" width=\"770\" height=\"452\">\n<h3>6. Incorporate Movement<\/h3>\nWhile pregnant, I wish I could say I worked out four times per week and loved every minute\u2014but that just isn&#8217;t true.\n\nI felt extremely nauseated and tired throughout my first trimester. For that reason, I prioritized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> over pushing myself to workout. But once the nausea calmed down, I was able to incorporate more walking, prenatal Pilates, and light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/health-benefits-of-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strength training<\/a> (of just three to five pounds).\n\nAbove all, it&#8217;s important to do what you makes you feel good and stay comfortable. If your body is calling for more rest, rest! Conversely, if you feel really good working out, then by all means continue working out.\n\nThat said, the general rule is to not do anything where you can\u2019t catch your breath. So when it comes to fitness and pregnancy advice, remember to be easy on yourself. Even though you may not feel it, your body is doing so much.
