It\u2019s human nature. Especially in the age of omnipresent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-social-media-habits\/\">social media<\/a>. Beware though, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/298794212_A_systematic_review_of_the_impact_of_the_use_of_social_networking_sites_on_body_image_and_disordered_eating_outcomes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research has shown that social media usage may lead to poor body image and even disordered eating<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>It\u2019s hard to feel confident when you are following influencers on social media with \u201cpicture-perfect\u201d lives that are masterfully filtered, composed, and curated.\r\n\r\nRemember, it can take a lot of effort to get that cool and carefree shot. So much of online perfection is an illusion created by computer programmers. With just a swipe, Snapchat can sculpt your jawline, widen your eyes, and airbrush your skin. As technology progresses, it only gets more difficult to tell the difference between IRL and online only.\r\n\r\nMore than ever, it\u2019s important to remember that beauty\u2014and feeling good about yourself\u2014comes from the inside out. Here are some ways you can disconnect from harmful comparisons on social media, and instead, reconnect to your inner cheerleader:\r\n<h3>Unplug<\/h3>\r\nIf you\u2019re up for it, try a 40-day social media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-detox-foods\/\">detox<\/a>. \u00a0Doing so allows you to overcome the temptation to draw comparisons between yourselves and others by focusing on the present.\r\n<h3>Be Selective When You Do Log On <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\r\nFollow accounts with positive messages that lift you up throughout the day and make you feel supported. Just click on the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/effyourbeautystandardsmovement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#effyourbeautystandards<\/a> and you\u2019ll see a wide array of gorgeous women celebrating themselves.\r\n<h3>Prioritize Self-Care<\/h3>\r\nTake long baths, give yourself at-home facials, and when irksome situations come up, try these tips for reducing stress. Your levels of stress and your self-esteem inform each other. If your self-esteem is low<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2996275\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">, studies show that you will have a much harder time coping with stress<\/a>. Alternately, if you\u2019re stressed out, you\u2019ll lose much-needed energy to keep your self-esteem in check. So always make sure you\u2019re staying a few steps ahead \u2013 and when all else fails, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/18\/beauty-zzzz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get some sleep!<\/a>\r\n<h3>Exercise and Eat Healthfully<\/h3>\r\nEver heard of the mind-body-soul connection? That\u2019s because if your body feels strong, your mind and soul will most often come along for the ride. Eating healthfully is different for everyone, but nutrient-rich foods are your best bet. Cut out sugar as much as you can, as it increases anxiety due to blood sugar spikes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/7\/uber-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get your energy from adrenal-fatigue supporting clean adaptogens.<\/a> Exercise can help by boosting your circulation, getting oxygen pumping into your vital organs, and releasing feel-good chemicals.\r\n<h3>Chill with People in Alignment with Your Core Values<\/h3>\r\nGravitate to where the vibes are always good. Meet up with friends to do positive activities like yoga, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-start-meditating\/\">meditation<\/a>, hiking, or going to your favorite spiritual place. You can also get a great boost from serving others.
