Then I decided that it was time to take action.\r\n\r\nFrom there, I went down a relentless Google wormhole researching &#8220;retinol in your 20s.&#8221; Some articles said it was the best topical you could possibly apply on your skin. However, others told me I should hold off on the anti-aging big guns. Because the side effects of retinol include increased sensitivity to the sun and flakiness, I wanted to make sure I had all the details before embarking on my retinol journey.\r\n\r\nSo I reached out to two experts in the field: <a href=\"https:\/\/kimnicholsmd.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kim Nichols, MD FAAD<\/a>, a board-certified dermatologist, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanidarden.com\/pages\/our-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shani Darden<\/a>, a celebrity esthetician who works with the likes of Chrissy Teigen and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.\r\n\r\nKeep reading to find out the truth about using retinol in your 20s.\r\n<h2>First, What Is Retinol?<\/h2>\r\nRetinol, aka vitamin A, is a topical skin treatment that increases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skin-cell-turnover\/\">skin cell turnover<\/a>. Further, it helps &#8220;refine the skin and reduce the signs of aging often by environmental factors,&#8221; says Dr. Nichols.\r\n\r\n&#8220;Your skin endures bacteria and environmental pollution daily, which can show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-are-free-radicals-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signs of premature aging<\/a> if not protected each day and night,&#8221; she continues.\r\n<h2>What Does Retinol Do?<\/h2>\r\nThe benefits of retinol aren&#8217;t only limited to anti-aging.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&#8220;Retinol minimizes fine lines and wrinkles,&#8221; Dr. Nichols says. In your 20s, she explains &#8220;signs of aging start to appear, so it\u2019s best to ensure you\u2019re on a good skincare routine early.&#8221; If you wait until later, it&#8217;ll be more difficult and potentially less effective to get your skin to bounce back.\r\n\r\n(For the record, Shani practices what she preaches: She&#8217;s been using retinol since she was 23.)\r\n<h2><strong>What Retinol Should I Use?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nYou don&#8217;t have to get a prescription for retinol, and there are plenty of stellar over-the-counter options available. That said, it&#8217;s important to choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-serum-should-i-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retinol serum<\/a> that works for your skin type, especially if you have sensitive skin.\r\n\r\n&#8220;I think it\u2019s important to consult a skincare professional to determine which retinol is best suited for your skin type,&#8221; Shani explains. &#8220;My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanidarden.com\/products\/resurface-by-shani-darden-retinol-reform-1oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Retinol\u00a0Reform<\/a> is a gentle yet effective option that&#8217;s great for most skin types.&#8221; (Bonus: Celebs like Jessica Alba are mega fans.)\r\n<h2>How to Use Retinol<\/h2>\r\nLastly, here are a few quick tips for using retinol.\r\n<h3>How Often to Use Retinol<\/h3>\r\nShani recommends start with retinol one night a week. From there, gradually build up usage since retinol can be drying. Once you&#8217;ve built up tolerance, applying it three nights per week is generally recommended.\r\n<h3>When to Apply It<\/h3>\r\nBe sure to apply retinol only at night and always follow with moisturizer.\r\n<h3>How much retinol do I need?<\/h3>\r\nNote that using more product won&#8217;t make it more effective. Dr. Nichols says you should only need about a penny-sized drop to cover your entire face.\r\n<h3>Protect Your Skin with SPF<\/h3>\r\nFinally, make sure you&#8217;re extra diligent about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/chemical-vs-physical-sunscreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wearing sunscreen<\/a> when using retinol, since it can make your skin extra sensitive to sun exposure.
