Ask enough people what’s behind all of it, and you’ll eventually land on the same three letters: NAD+.

So what is NAD+, and why does everyone from RDs to your favorite skinfluencer suddenly seem to be talking about it? Here’s the short version: NAD+ is something your body already makes, every single day, on its own. It’s also something you have real influence over, through how you move, eat, and sleep, and even through supplementation. Let’s break down each piece.

So, What Is NAD+?

What is NAD, in the simplest terms? NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme, basically a helper molecule, that every single cell in your body needs to function. Think of it less like a nutrient and more like currency: your cells “spend” NAD+ to get almost everything done.

Here’s what that spending buys you:

Energy. Your mitochondria (the “powerhouse of the cell” you learned about gradeschool) use NAD+ to turn food into usable energy. Less NAD+ available means that conversion runs less smoothly, per a comprehensive scientific review. Picture a phone battery: at 100%, everything runs fast and smooth. At 60%, everything still works, just slower and with more effort.

Repair. NAD+ fuels the enzymes that patrol your cells looking for DNA damage and fixing it, per a widely cited review on NAD+ and aging. Think of it as the raw material your body’s maintenance crew needs to do their job.

Cellular “settings.” NAD+ also activates sirtuins, otherwise nicknamed “longevity proteins” because they help regulate how your cells age, adapt to stress, and manage energy. Sirtuins depend on NAD+ to function. Low NAD+ levels can negatively affect sirtuin activity, poorly impacting cellular aging.

So, what is NAD’s real job? It’s the fuel and the toolkit your cells use to keep everything- energy, repair, regulation, running the way it’s supposed to.

What Is NAD’s Connection to Aging?

Here’s the part that explains why this conversation is everywhere right now: NAD+ levels naturally decline as you get older. This has actually been measured directly: researchers analyzed real human skin biopsies (ages 15 to 77, plus newborns) and found NAD+ dropped significantly with age, alongside more DNA damage and slower repair activity in that same tissue, across the age range studied. In skeletal muscle, lower NAD+ has been linked to reduced physical function in older adults, per research published in Nature Aging.

Zooming into the mechanism: one likely reason skin NAD+ decline shows up as visible aging is sirtuins again. A systematic review of the research on SIRT1 and skin (the same NAD+-dependent protein family from above) describes its role in fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. This is a proposed mechanism connecting the dots, not a single study proving “less NAD+ causes less collagen” in a straight line, but it’s a reasonable explanation for why skin resilience changes with age.

Translation: it’s less that your cells “break,” and more that they’re running on a smaller battery. Same phone, same apps, just less charge to work with.

Your Body Already Makes NAD+, and You Can Support It

This is the part that tends to get lost in the wellness noise: NAD+ isn’t something you’re missing and need to go acquire. Your body is making it right now, in every cell, all day long. The more useful question isn’t “how do I get NAD+”; it’s “how do I help my body make and use more of it?”

Here’s what the research says:

Move consistently

While a singular workout won’t move the needle much; studies on single exercise sessions are mixed, but consistent training does. In previously untrained adults, 10 weeks of resistance training raised muscle NAD+ by up to 127% (and a related molecule, NADH, by 99%), alongside improvements in the enzymes and proteins that manage NAD+, in a controlled trial. Separately, people who simply walk more, tracked by daily step count, tend to have higher muscle NAD+ and better physical function as they age, per the same Nature Aging research mentioned above. Think of exercise as sending your cells a memo: “we need this system running, build more of it.”

Give your body a break from constant eating

When your cells sense less incoming fuel, they switch on NAMPT, the enzyme that’s the rate-limiting step in rebuilding NAD+, according to a research review on fasting and metabolism. This means less NAD+ is being produced.

However, the question remains which fasting type is best and how long a fasting window is needed to effectively and reliably raise NAD+. Fasting also isn’t one-size-fits-all; it depends on your health history, medications, and goals, so this is a good one to bring to a healthcare provider or RD and figure out what split, if any, makes sense for you.

Eat the building blocks

NAD+ is built from dietary precursors, mainly niacin (vitamin B3), according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Good everyday sources include chicken and turkey, tuna and salmon, mushrooms, and legumes.

None of these require a total lifestyle overhaul. Small, simple, repeatable habits are at the foundation of supporting the natural production of your body’s NAD+.

Can You Just Take NAD+ Directly?

Fair question, and here’s the honest, slightly annoying answer: technically yes, but it’s not the most effective route, and here’s why.

Picture trying to ship ice cream across the country without a cooler. It melts before it arrives. NAD+ taken orally behaves a lot like that: it’s a fragile, larger molecule that tends to break down in digestion before your cells ever get to use it. However, there is a clinically studied solution.

NMN is the more efficient stepping stone. Instead of NAD+ itself, most research and most supplements focus on NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a smaller precursor molecule your body converts into NAD+ once it’s absorbed. Simply put: NMN → NAD+ in the body, surviving the trip better.

Clinical research backs this up: in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, healthy adults taking 250 mg of NMN daily saw their whole-blood NAD+ rise 2.5-fold at 4 weeks, compared to baseline, with no safety concerns flagged, according to a trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition. And that’s not the only study; it’s one of a dozen-plus peer-reviewed randomized NMN and NR trials in humans that show this same pattern:

What about IV or injectable NAD+?

This delivers NAD+ straight into your bloodstream, skipping digestion entirely, which sounds like it should be the most effective option, and in terms of raising blood NAD+ quickly, it is. But here’s the catch: a large 2026 systematic review of the NAD+ research looking at over a hundred human and animal studies found zero controlled trials proving IV or injectable NAD+ actually improves anti-aging or wellness outcomes in otherwise healthy people. It’s also invasive and considerably more expensive than a daily capsule. So “most direct” doesn’t currently mean “most proven,” at least not yet. I’m not saying it’s not effective, but if you’re curious about it, that’s a conversation best for your healthcare provider, rather than being influenced by a wellness influencer’s story alone.

The Bottom Line: What Is NAD?

What is NAD? A helper molecule your body already makes, in every cell, that powers your energy, DNA repair, and cellular aging clock, and one that naturally runs lower as you get older.

What is NAD not? Something you’re deficient in and need to urgently acquire, or something a single injection or pill fixes on its own. The most reliable path is layered: move your body consistently, eat foods with real niacin and protein, talk to a healthcare provider about whether any kind of fasting or eating-window approach fits your life, and if you want extra support, NMN currently has the strongest, most practical research behind it as an oral option.

If you’ve been asking what NAD is and whether any of this is worth your time, here’s the real answer: your body is already doing the work. You just get a say in how well it’s resourced to keep doing it.

You feel it before you can name it.
