Plus: how your summer habits may influence when and what you eat, too.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-hot-weather-affect-your-hunger-levels\">Does Hot Weather Affect Your Hunger Levels?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cec5b2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cec5b2;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/summer-appetite.jpg\" alt=\"summer appetite\" class=\"wp-image-45013 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Many people like to warm up with soups and stews in winter and cool off with iced beverages and chilled fruit in summer. And that\u2019s not just for the sake of leaning into seasonal vibes. It turns out that heat and humidity (or a lack thereof) can have a real bearing on your hunger levels.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn warmer conditions, people may experience a slight dip in appetite, along with small shifts in hormones like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ghrelin-and-leptin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">ghrelin (hunger) and leptin (satiety)<\/a>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topnutritioncoaching.com\/blog-authors\/sydney-lappe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sydney Lappe, MS, RDN<\/a>, a dietitian with Top Nutrition Coaching in St. Louis, Missouri. Hormones aside, your body is also less primed to eat for other reasons. \u201cWhen body temperature rises, blood flow gets redirected toward the skin to help with cooling, which reduces blood flow to the digestive system,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristenkuminskird.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kristen Kuminski, RD, CDN<\/a>, a dietitian in Buffalo, New York. In turn, your appetite signals get suppressed more than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s common enough to want to eat less in summer, these shifts may be subtle. However, Lappe says that more extreme conditions\u2014like temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and high humidity\u2014can suppress your appetite more notably.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In addition, some research suggests that your desire for food may shift in hot weather. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0195666322002355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small study<\/a> in lean, healthy individuals assessed hunger, food intake, enjoyment, and wanting of food when exposed to 16 hours of conditions either 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit. While there weren\u2019t any major differences in hunger or food intake across the two groups, those exposed to hotter conditions had lower liking and wanting of sweet and high-fat foods, which may indicate altered appetite sensations.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-hydration-come-into-play\">How Does Hydration Come Into Play?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a89e63\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a89e63;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/summer-appetite-hydrating.jpg\" alt=\"summer appetite\" class=\"wp-image-45014 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Hydration and hunger cues get crossed\u2014especially in summer, as well as when you don\u2019t drink enough water to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In summer, hydration needs rise significantly. \u201cIn the heat, your body generally cues you to drink more instead of eat differently,\u201d says Lappe. However, your hunger cues get thrown for a greater loop when you lack adequate H2O. More extreme dehydration seems to dampen appetite and lower food intake, she continues, though that\u2019s likely due to factors like dry mouth rather than meaningful changes in hunger signals.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-else-can-summer-affect-your-hunger-and-eating-habits\">How Else Can Summer Affect Your Hunger and Eating Habits?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>For many of us, summertime can disrupt our typical eating patterns. For starters, more daylight can have a slight impact on your hunger cues and when you eat. \u201cLonger days can push <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, activity, and meals later, which may shift when you feel hungry more than how much you actually eat,\u201d Lappe explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plus, specific events in summer\u2014such as boozy brunches, cocktail hours, and travel\u2014can also throw you for a loop, sometimes in less-than-helpful ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">Alcohol<\/a> may urge you to ditch healthy eating habits and can make more calorie-dense, \u2018fun\u2019 foods more appealing, says Lappe. \u201cMeanwhile, irregular schedules from travel can lead to less consistent eating patterns, later meals, and more grazing,\u201d she adds. This might work to your advantage if you\u2019re trying to lose weight or keep your appetite for more indulgent treats in check. However, drinking alcohol and traveling can shift this trajectory in the opposite direction, so be careful to avoid these instances from sabotaging your diet.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>All things considered, Kuminski suggests modifying your dietary patterns slightly when the weather gets hot and humid. \u201cLighter, more frequent meals tend to work better in summer than heavy ones,\u201d she says. \u201cThe body is already working hard to regulate temperature, and a large meal adds to that load.\u201d This approach can ensure that you\u2019re getting your necessary daily nutrients while not overburdening your system.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>And of course, don\u2019t forget to stay hydrated. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your weight in ounces of water daily, though your needs will rise the hotter it gets and the more active you are.
