This is where supplementation can help fill the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Again, magnesium is crucial for countless functions and processes. According to Juliana Vocca, MS, RD, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/primewomennutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Women Nutrition<\/a> in Moorestown, New Jersey, magnesium\u2019s benefits span:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Relaxing muscles and reducing cramps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boosting relaxation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improving sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping to control blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aiding digestive health (including relieving constipation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regulating blood sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping to reduce migraines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-magnesium-good-for-weight-loss\">Is Magnesium Good for Weight Loss?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While magnesium might not be a headliner in the world of weight loss, you can think of it as a supporting player. Per Vocca, it doesn\u2019t directly burn fat, but it still influences bodily processes that can contribute to a healthier weight.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is an important cofactor in hundreds of biochemical reactions in our body\u2014particularly in cellular energy production, which optimizes your metabolism and helps you burn more calories,\u201d Vocca says. \u201cIt also helps regulate insulin, preventing spikes that lead to excess body fat storage and improving insulin sensitivity.\u201d Since it helps regulate both insulin and blood sugar, this can also help curb cravings and avoid energy crashes, says Brantley-Lopez.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Because magnesium can also improve sleep, it could indirectly promote weight loss as good shut-eye helps regulate hunger hormones. And since it promotes relaxation, Vocca says you might have less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\">cortisol<\/a> circulating, thereby keeping belly fat in check. \u201cIt may also support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a> and regularity, which many people overlook,\u201d adds Brantley-Lopez. While regularity doesn\u2019t equal fat loss, it can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-bloating\/\">bloating<\/a> and help you feel more comfortable in your body.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Research suggests magnesium may be most impactful for people who are already metabolically vulnerable. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32654500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One meta-analysis<\/a> of 32 randomized controlled trials found a few positive links between magnesium supplementation, weight loss, and body composition in specific subgroups. These subgroups\u2014alongside those with hypertension, as well as females at large\u2014also experienced weight loss and a reduction in waist circumference.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00394-020-02206-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other long-term data<\/a> suggests that magnesium intake is inversely associated with developing obesity, pointing to its role in long-term metabolic health (over quick fixes).<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-magnesium-help-with-weight-loss-the-takeaway\">Does Magnesium Help With Weight Loss: The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If magnesium is the only new thing you integrate into your weight loss plan, Vocca says you\u2019re unlikely to see much change on the scale. Nonetheless, when you start taking it, you could experience downstream effects that positively influence your weight loss goals.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my practice, magnesium isn\u2019t usually the first thing I reach for as a stand-alone weight loss supplement, but it\u2019s often a very smart nutrient to assess,\u201d says Brantley-Lopez. \u201cI look at magnesium as part of the foundation. It can support sleep, stress resilience, blood sugar balance, and digestion\u2014all of which play a role in how easy or difficult weight management feels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in taking a new magnesium supplement, your biggest concerns will dictate what the best form to take is. \u201cFor example, magnesium citrate or oxide is used for digestive health, while magnesium glycinate can help with sleep and stress,\u201d Vocca shares.
