You\u2019re working out. You\u2019re getting your steps in. And still\u2026 you\u2019re exhausted. At a certain point, the question isn\u2019t \u201cwhat am I missing?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s \u201cWhat am I overlooking?\u201d Because, from a functional nutrition lens, energy issues are rarely random. They\u2019re usually a reflection of how well your foundations are actually working.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-before-hormones-consider-this\">Before Hormones, Consider This:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"919196\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #919196;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Why-am-I-so-tired-.jpg\" alt=\"Why am I so tired?\" class=\"wp-image-44763 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-before-we-talk-supplements-or-hormones-i-ask-my-clients-these-questions\">Before we talk supplements or hormones, I ask my clients these questions:\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n<p><strong>How long after waking are you eating?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Are you waiting hours, running on coffee, doing a fasted workout, and then wondering why you crash later?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you getting morning sunlight within 60 minutes of waking?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Or is your first light exposure your phone screen, followed by your inbox?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you going too long between meals?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Because even \u201chealthy\u201d undereating or spacing meals too far apart can create low, unstable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Are your meals actually anchored?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Or are they light, snacky, and missing enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> to keep you steady?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you ever truly in a parasympathetic state?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Or are you eating, working, scrolling, and living in constant low-grade \u201cgo mode\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Because you can check all the \u201cwellness\u201d boxes\u2026 and still be missing the things that actually regulate energy.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lets-start-here-blood-sugar\">Let\u2019s Start Here: Blood Sugar <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>You may think your blood sugar isn&#8217;t a problem because you eat a healthy diet. However, it\u2019s not just the food we\u2019re eating; it\u2019s also a lot of what foods we\u2019re pairing together and how we\u2019re preparing them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For example, starting your day off with a fasted workout or coffee before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">breakfast<\/a> can signal stress to your body, altering blood sugar levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ok, that may not be new news. But, did you know that your morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/post-workout-smoothie-recipes\/\">smoothie<\/a> or oatmeal could also be spiking your blood sugar if there\u2019s too much fruit or carbohydrate and not enough fiber and protein? It\u2019s not just the foods you eat, but how you pair them that\u2019s key.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s not even what you\u2019re eating\u2026 it\u2019s how you\u2019re eating it. If you\u2019re going too long between meals or grazing throughout the day, your blood sugar won\u2019t respond well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, if you\u2019re eating \u201con the go,\u201d when your body is in \u201cfight or flight,\u201d this can also alter blood sugar metabolism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>These combinations quietly drive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Energy dips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brain fog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cravings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That \u201ctired but wired\u201d feeling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p><strong>If this is you, here\u2019s where to start:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aim to eat within ~60 minutes of waking.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to get in 20-30 grams of protein and 5-10 grams of fiber.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need to eat something lighter before a workout, that\u2019s ok but still aim to get a bit of protein and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">healthy fats<\/a> in there.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a meal structure throughout the day so you\u2019re eating every 3-4 hours, and build your plate with protein and fiber first.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stable blood sugar = stable energy. It\u2019s that foundational.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-up-your-circadian-rhythm-a-k-a-your-bodys-internal-clock\">Next Up: Your Circadian Rhythm (a.k.a your body\u2019s internal clock)<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>This is one of those things that you\u2019ve probably seen trending on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-social-media-habits\/\">social media<\/a> that sounds \u201cwellness-y\u201d\u2026 but it\u2019s actually deeply physiological.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard or follow Dr.Huberman, he\u2019s a huge proponent of supporting your body\u2019s circadian rhythm, and I totally understand why!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>You can be getting enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> on paper and still feel off if your body isn\u2019t anchored to a consistent rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So, I ask my clients the following to learn more:<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you getting morning sunlight within 60 minutes of waking?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Or is your first light exposure on your phone, and then you don\u2019t get outside until noon?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you usually go to bed and wake up at the same time?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Or do you go with the flow, get hung up watching your favorite TV show, and then snooze your alarm until the last minute?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you dim the lights at night, wear blue-light glasses, and escape from technology?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Or do you keep the overhead lights on and sink into the couch while scrolling on TikTok?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>All of these things deeply<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6751071\/\"> impact your circadian rhythm,<\/a> aka your body&#8217;s 24-hour clock. When this is in sync with sunrise and sunset and your body is in a routine, both sleep and energy improve.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What this can look like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Step outside within 60 minutes of waking, even for 5-10 minutes.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open your windows right away (it won\u2019t work through a closed one)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep sleep and wake times relatively consistent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dim the lights at night and turn on \u201cnight shift\u201d on your devices\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you\u2019re in the \u201creset\u201d mode, aim to see the sunrise and sunset as much as you can<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s simple, but it\u2019s one of the fastest ways to shift energy. While you don\u2019t have to be perfect, consistency goes a long way here, and I promise your body will thank you!<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nutrient-status-as-an-indicator\">Nutrient Status As An Indicator <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>You can be eating a \u201creally healthy\u201d diet and still come up short here. As a Dietitian, I even supplement my diet as it feels nearly impossible to get it all through food.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Three labs I almost always look at when someone says they\u2019re exhausted:<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12763985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Iron + Ferritin (iron storage)<br><\/strong><\/a>This impacts how well your body can carry oxygen, which directly affects energy production.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28033244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Vitamin D<br><\/strong><\/a>This plays a role in mood, immune signaling, and overall vitality.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When these are low or even suboptimal, it\u2019s not always dramatic. It\u2019s more like\u2026 everything just feels harder than it should (think: afternoon crashes and slower workout recovery).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Gregory-Russell-Jones-2\/publication\/362644480_Functional_Vitamin_B12_deficiency_in_Chronic_Fatigue_Syndrome_International_Journal_of_Psychiatry_Corresponding_author\/links\/62f5e96952130a3cd7159c37\/Functional-Vitamin-B12-deficiency-in-Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome-International-Journal-of-Psychiatry-Corresponding-author.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Vitamin B12<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Especially if you\u2019re dealing with brain fog or low focus. This supports energy at a cellular level.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to start:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Test, don\u2019t guess, and supplement as needed. This is one of those areas where data really matters.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-another-big-one-your-nervous-system\">Another Big One, Your Nervous System<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>This is the piece most people skip, and also the thing that tends to improve it all.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>You can be doing everything \u201cright,\u201d but if your body is constantly in a low-grade state of stress, it changes how you produce and use energy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>And that impacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sleep quality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22314561\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digestion and Gut Health<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5579396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metabolism<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hormone signaling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy output<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p><strong>So I\u2019ll ask clients:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Do you ever actually feel relaxed in your body?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Do you take time to unwind?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>How do you support your nervous system?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s your calendar look like?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But in all honesty, these are formalities. Everyone can benefit from nervous system support, yet 95% of us neglect it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to start:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eat without distractions when you can (no phone, no tv, just a moment to pause)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take 5 Deep Belly Breaths whenever you feel stress come on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a nervous system practice that works for you: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-start-meditating\/\">meditation<\/a>, breathwork, reading, painting, etc.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find pockets in the day for a reset &#8211; maybe it\u2019s a quick walk around the block, listening to nature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-youre-still-asking-why-am-i-so-tired-this-is-where-i-look-next\">If you\u2019re still asking, \u201cWhy am I so tired?\u201d&#8230;This is where I Look Next<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Ok, so you checked off the boxes above and built the foundation, but something still feels off. This is where a bit more data can help.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A few things I\u2019ll typically look at:<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jes\/article\/3\/7\/1345\/5489459?guestAccessKey=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>A full thyroid panel<br><\/strong><\/a>Not just TSH. Energy is tightly tied to metabolic function. (Think: T3, T4, Free T3, T4, Reverse T3, TPO, TpAb)<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Blood sugar markers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Fasting glucose, insulin, or A1C to confirm what we\u2019re seeing day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\">Cortisol<\/a> rhythm (when needed)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you feel exhausted in the morning but wired at night, this can give insight into your daily rhythm. A DUTCH Hormone test can help with this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>By running these labs and focusing on the foundations listed above, you can better understand where your body needs support and how it all comes together. Most fatigue isn\u2019t one big issue; it\u2019s a few small things\u2026 all pulling in the same direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In short, energy isn\u2019t just about doing more.
