Unlike many nutrition trends and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-social-media-habits\/\">social media<\/a> hype, this is actually a good thing. \u201cFiber is one of the most overlooked areas of our diet, and yet most Americans are deficient,\u201d says Sarah Greenfield, MS, RD, a dietitian specializing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a> and the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fearlessfig.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fearless Fig<\/a>. In fact, an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6124841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">95 percent<\/a> of adults in the US don\u2019t get enough of the digestion-regulating, blood sugar-balancing, satiety-promoting nutrient daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s on your radar to increase your intake\u2014and clearly it should be for most of us\u2014is there an ideal time of day to eat fiber? (Spoiler alert: yes, no, maybe so.)<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-there-a-best-time-of-day-to-eat-fiber\">Is There a \u201cBest\u201d Time of Day to Eat Fiber?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"6e6761\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #6e6761;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/best-time-to-eat-fiber-.jpg\" alt=\"best time to eat fiber \" class=\"wp-image-44666 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Instead of focusing on when to eat the bulk of your fiber foods or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-and-supplements-should-i-take\/\">supplements<\/a>, you should really make sure you\u2019re getting enough fiber daily, which is about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-fiber-per-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">25 grams for women and 38 grams for men<\/a>, per the USDA.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As far as timing goes, Greenfield says you should space your fiber intake throughout the day. That\u2019s because too much fiber at once can put added strain on your digestive system. \u201cThe best way to incorporate that into your diet is to aim for 10 grams of fiber per meal,\u201d says Greenfield.<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Again, it\u2019s best to get your fiber intermittently from morning through night. Yet if you\u2019re coming up short on grams at meals and snacks\u2014and you perhaps want to add more fiber-rich foods or even a fiber supplement like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/122\/flatter-me-fiber-glp1-booster\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Flatter Me Fiber<\/a> into your rotation\u2014you <em>could<\/em> strategically time stable blood sugar response.\u201d Getting fiber in the a.m. won\u2019t only promote stable energy levels but also satiety and digestive regularity throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-before-meals-or-as-snacks\">Before meals (or as snacks)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Trying to manage your weight? Boosting your fiber intake before your main meals may help with portion control. However, this timing hack isn\u2019t just limited to mealtimes. Greenfield suggests leaning on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/high-fiber-snacks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">high-fiber snack<\/a> in anticipation of (or as a response to) whenever cravings hit. Solid fiber foods as filling snacks include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apple slices with peanut butter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avocado toast on whole-grain bread<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crudit\u00e9s with hummus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chia pudding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-fiber energy balls (made of oats, dates, and flaxseed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-evening\">In the evening<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>In case you\u2019re a chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-snacking-at-night\/?srsltid=AfmBOopmyS3rjGfh1zt8T09umloPP4bk6xXep0BHK4dkqd2tGtTIRgDE\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">late-night snacker<\/a> like me, eating fiber foods in the evening can help tame down your midnight cravings. But that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This strategic timing can help out anyone who deals with tummy troubles on account of the nutrient. \u201cIf you experience discomfort after eating fiber, it may be best to get higher fiber before bedtime,\u201d says Greenfield. \u201cThat way, you can process it while you are sleeping and if you are experiencing distention, it won&#8217;t be as bothersome while you are sleeping.\u201d (Bonus: Upping your fiber intake at night just might set you up for a satisfying bowel movement by morning.)<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-takeaway\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Before you start thinking about optimizing the timing of your fiber intake, the primary goal should be to work your way towards getting enough daily. And if you\u2019re currently on a low-fiber diet, you\u2019ll want to be strategic about increasing how much you get.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are not used to having high amounts of fiber in your diet, it is best to start slow and increase slowly,\u201d says Greenfield. \u201cToo much fiber can create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-bloating\/\">bloating<\/a> and discomfort, so slowly increasing it is best.\u201d (For example, you could track your current fiber intake and try to increase it by a few grams for a week or two before doubling that.) That said, more fiber surely doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re doomed for digestive distress as your gram count trends upward. \u201cIt all comes down to how much your body can tolerate and how efficient your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a> is,\u201d Greenfield continues.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Lastly, Greenfield suggests trying to get the bulk of the nutrients through whole, fiber-rich foods as best you can. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/high-fiber-foods\/art-20050948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great sources of fiber<\/a> include fruits (raspberries, pears, apples), vegetables (peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts), grains (whole-wheat spaghetti, barley, quinoa), and legumes and seeds (lentils, beans, chia seeds). But if you\u2019re still coming up short, she says that fiber supplements\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/122\/flatter-me-fiber-glp1-booster\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Flatter Me Fiber<\/a>, with 10 grams of prebiotic fiber per serving, plus digestive enzymes to support digestion and bypass bloating\u2014are a great way to increase fiber with ease. \u201cJust remember to go slow with it,\u201d she says.
