All you need to do is take a few expert-backed, corrective measures to allow your metabolism to work as fast and efficiently as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>We asked dietitians what the biggest mistakes people make as far as their metabolism goes. Plus: the quick fixes you can make to get things back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-youre-always-on-a-diet\" data-short-title=\"You\u2019re Always on a Diet\">1. You\u2019re Always on a Diet<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Constantly dieting and undereating at meals is a surefire way to sabotage your metabolic function, says Erin Jowett, MS, RD, LDN, a functional dietitian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a> expert, and the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativeweightandwellness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrative Weight &amp; Wellness<\/a> in Salem, Massachusetts. \u201cWhen your body never gets a break, it adapts by conserving and protecting energy instead of burning and letting it go,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people trying to lose weight mistakenly put themselves in an overly high calorie deficit, which leads them to take in too few calories to efficiently fuel their metabolism,\u201d adds <a href=\"https:\/\/inutritioncenter.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanessa Imus, MS, RDN<\/a>, owner of Integrated Nutrition for Weight Loss in Bothell, Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The fix:<\/strong> Don\u2019t chronically undereat to the point that your metabolism becomes sluggish. \u201cThe focus should instead be on getting sufficient calories that still fuel metabolism while also leading to some weight loss,\u201d says Imus.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For long-term weight loss, you should incorporate intentional phases of slight caloric restriction to lose fat, followed by a few months of a \u2018diet break\u2019 to maintain your weight, says Jowett. If you still have more weight or fat to lose, you should restart the process only once your metabolism has recalibrated.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-you-dont-eat-enough-protein\" data-short-title=\"You Don\u2019t Eat Enough Protein\">2. You Don\u2019t Eat Enough Protein<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Protein-maxxing is all the rage these days\u2014and at least part of the trend is fueled by logic. While there can be too much of a good thing, it\u2019s important not to veer into the territory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> anxiety, but the macro\u2019s importance shouldn\u2019t be underestimated.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cA diet low in protein can reduce metabolism, as protein is needed to sustain and build muscle mass,\u201d says Imus. \u201cIf we consistently don&#8217;t get enough protein, our body will eventually break down muscle tissue to obtain the protein it needs.\u201d She says this sabotages us in the long run not only by reducing muscle mass\u2014which is crucial for good health and an able body as we age\u2014but also by negatively impacting metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The fix:<\/strong> Prioritize protein at each meal and for healthy snacks. A solid goal is to aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-protein-do-i-need-daily\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram<\/a> of ideal body weight\u2014especially if you\u2019re trying to build muscle and\/or stay satiated while losing weight.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-youre-not-eating-metabolic-helpers\" data-short-title=\"You\u2019re Not Eating Metabolic Helpers\">3. You\u2019re Not Eating Metabolic Helpers<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Weight loss and high metabolism don\u2019t hinge upon the right caloric intake. According to Jowett, you should also include a few key ingredients\u2014including minerals, spices, and antioxidants\u2014to avoid slowing metabolic processes over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div When your circadian rhythm (aka your internal clock) is misaligned, your metabolism becomes less efficient\u2014even if you\u2019re eating all the right things.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> patterns that inform your circadian rhythm (and vice versa); what and when you eat informs the cycle, too. For instance, Jowett says that eating most calories at night\u2014whether that\u2019s a huge dinner or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-snacking-at-night\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqoJp_xPadsZfRLmEBdTMDVwi5m4P3UmYwztsKTfJnBjyo2emN-\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">late-night snack<\/a>\u2014leads to higher blood sugar and insulin levels, thus shifting the body toward energy storage rather than fat burning.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Circadian rhythm misalignment\u2014no matter the reason\u2014can also lead to higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\">cortisol<\/a> levels later in the day. \u201cThis creates a state where the body feels wired but tired, which is not a fat-burning environment,\u201d says Jowett. \u201cAt the same time, hunger hormones such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ghrelin-and-leptin\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqTqOlDpmpIEyilB_D-mvlUxhcqhPucDc0yKtAeap5eu4vDq2Nw\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">ghrelin and leptin<\/a> become dysregulated, often showing up as low appetite earlier in the day and stronger cravings at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The fix:<\/strong> Keep consistent mealtimes and eat balanced meals for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\">breakfast<\/a>, lunch, and dinner. \u201cSpreading calories out throughout the day can be helpful,\u201d says Imus. \u201cThe body is getting bursts of energy in small amounts throughout the day\u2014kind of like adding kindling to a fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To optimize your circadian rhythm (and boost your metabolism in the process), Jowett also suggests eating earlier in the day when possible (i.e., not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skipping-breakfast-to-lose-weight\/?srsltid=AfmBOooNNxBRxcbwbT_I6cugKlRheKGog0iq1g77UtZ1BaYAXStA4fZc\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">skipping breakfast<\/a>), keeping consistent sleep-wake times, and avoiding intense workouts at night. In other words, set up a healthy routine and follow through with it like clockwork. \u201cMetabolism responds best to predictability, and consistency signals safety,\u201d says Jowett.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-youre-not-strength-training-enough\" data-short-title=\"You\u2019re Not Strength Training Enough\">5. You\u2019re Not Strength Training Enough<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Strength training\u2014not crazy amounts of cardio\u2014is the unsung hero for weight loss. ICYMI: Muscle, as Jowett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/weight-loss-plan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">previously told us<\/a>, \u201cis the silent variable that decides whether weight loss actually improves your metabolism or slows it down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more muscle we have, the more calories we burn at rest,\u201d says Imus. That\u2019s because muscle boosts your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/metabolic-rate\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">resting metabolic rate<\/a> (aka the number of calories you burn from simply existing, no effort required). On the other hand, she says that spending too much time on cardio\u2014which burns calories in the moment, but may lead you to obsess over numbers or forgo resistance training\u2014can backfire.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The fix:<\/strong> Lift more weights. \u201cStrength training two to three times per week is a great goal to build and sustain muscle mass,\u201d says Imus.
