My first instinct was to clutch my metaphorical pearls, but then it got me thinking. We live in a culture where sharing every aspect of our lives is the norm. So why <em>aren\u2019t<\/em> more people talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a>? It\u2019s certainly a relevant topic: Around one in three people have digestive issues (source: HUM survey). When you put food in your mouth, the digestive process has already started. Your saliva starts to break down starches. When you swallow, that food travels through your esophagus into your stomach, where your stomach acid starts to break down proteins.\r\n\r\nThe next stop: the small intestine. Most of the nutrients from your food are absorbed here. The food you ate is mixed with digestive juices from your intestine, pancreas, and liver to break down starches, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, and carbs. The waste from this then travels to your large intestine, which absorbs any water and nutrients that may remain, and turns the waste solid. Your intestines also contain a plethora of good bacteria that help digest your food, vanquish pathogens, and produce vitamins.\r\n\r\nAn optimally functioning digestive system can help you maintain a healthy weight, clear up your skin, and even boost your energy. For the purposes of this piece on poop, poor digestive health can result in diarrhea, constipation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-bloating\/\">bloating<\/a>.\r\n<h2>The Signs of a Healthy Bowel<\/h2>\r\nYou may think that simply going number two every day is the sign of healthy bowel function. But it can vary from person to person. Generally, a healthy bowel means you poop one to three times a day. If you go more or less, that can still be healthy. However, you should always be able to poop easily.\r\n\r\nAlso, healthy bowel movements should be a certain consistency. For reference, take a peek at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.continence.org.au\/pages\/bristol-stool-chart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bristol Stool Chart<\/a>. Normal poop should be a type three or four.\r\n<h2>The Perfect Poop Position<\/h2>\r\nSince the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squattypotty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Squatty Potty<\/a> has become relatively mainstream, more people are looking into the best pooping position.\r\n\r\nGiulia Enders, microbiologist and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gut-Inside-Story-Bodys-Underrated\/dp\/1771641495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body&#8217;s Most Underrated Organ<\/em><\/a> (a truly fascinating read), recommends that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2015\/may\/18\/truth-about-poo-doing-it-wrong-giulia-enders-squatting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">squat when you poo<\/a>. Why? Because your bowels aren&#8217;t designed to open up completely when you&#8217;re fully sitting or standing. Squatting with your feet on a stool and leaning forward makes it easier to defecate, and is a more natural position than sitting fully. (Bonus: it&#8217;s also a timesaver!) She also says that instances of diverticulitis (an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a> in the digestive tract) are much less common among people who squat to poop than people who sit.\r\n<h2>The Scoop on Good Gut Bacteria<\/h2>\r\n<img data-dominant-color=\"e2efe1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e2efe1;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4727 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/shutterstock_418246657-1.jpg\" alt=\"Good Gut Bacteria - The Wellnest by HUM Nutrition\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\r\n\r\nCertain bacteria are essential to your health, especially when it comes to your gut. Your gut bacteria keep your digestive system running smoothly since they help to digest your food, and also keep bad bacteria at bay. But certain things can throw off the balance of your gut bacteria. Antibiotics, for instance, kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria.\r\n\r\nWhen your gut bacteria are out of whack, it throws off your digestive system. The result: irregular bowel movements (read: constipation or diarrhea).\r\n\r\nThat&#8217;s where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-guide-to-choosing-the-best-probiotic-for-you\/\">probiotics<\/a> come in, as they help replenish the good bacteria in your gut. (This same strain has been found to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0088733\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decrease symptoms of anxiety<\/a>.) Other strains of lactobacilli bacteria are effective against diarrhea. <a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/137\/3\/803S.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bifidobacterium<\/a> have been shown to help with diarrhea, including diarrhea brought on by an infectious disease, traveler&#8217;s diarrhea, and irritable bowel diseases. Long story short: Probiotics help your good gut bacteria flourish and improve bowel function.\r\n\r\nProbiotics can even help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3419998\/\">alleviate symptoms of abdominal pain and bloating<\/a> in people with irritable bowel syndrome.\r\n<h3>Probiotics for Constipation<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/natural\/891.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> appears to indicate that supplementing with bifidobacterium can help with constipation. <a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/early\/2014\/08\/06\/ajcn.114.089151.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Researchers at King&#8217;s College in London<\/a> looked at multiple studies and found that supplementing with bifidobacterium increased the number of times subjects pooped each week by 1.3 times.\r\n\r\nWhether you&#8217;re constipated, have diarrhea, or experience other gastrointestinal distress, supplementing with probiotics can be beneficial to help your gut bacteria thrive and help you feel better when
