As beneficial as they may be to aid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a>, manage diabetes, and even curb certain addictions, they\u2019re not without undesired side effects. One inconvenient truth that doesn\u2019t get a ton of airtime is the fact that muscle loss is highly likely while taking these medications\u2026 which could have some unfortunate consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That said, is muscle loss inevitable while taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/glp-1-side-effects\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">GLP-1 meds<\/a>, and what can you do to combat it? We asked a weight loss physician and a certified personal trainer for the scoop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c3b5a6\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c3b5a6;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/glp-1-muscle-loss.jpg\" alt=\"glp-1 muscle loss\" class=\"wp-image-42855 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-glp-1-medications-cause-muscle-loss\">Do GLP-1 Medications Cause Muscle Loss?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>First things first, it\u2019s worth noting that GLP-1 agonists don\u2019t <em>directly<\/em> cause muscle loss. \u201cInstead, muscle loss can occur indirectly due to decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> intake, overall calorie restriction resulting from appetite suppression, and lack of weight-bearing exercises,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthmeetswellness.com\/provider\/elizabeth-sharp-edens-md-dabom-ifmcp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elizabeth Sharp, MD, DABOM, IFMCP<\/a>, a board-certified internal medicine and obesity medicine physician and the founder and medical director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthmeetswellness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Meets Wellness<\/a> in NYC. \u201cMuscle loss typically occurs during any significant weight loss, with or without GLP-1 medications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, muscle loss is highly common in people on GLP-1s\u2014and research shows that it may actually be more pronounced in people taking GLP-1 meds versus other methods for weight loss.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(24)00272-9\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 article<\/a> in <em>The Lancet Diabetes &amp; Endocrinology,<\/em> studies suggest that muscle loss on GLP-1s ranges from 25 to 39 percent of total weight loss over 36 to 72 weeks. In contrast, non-Rx caloric restriction studies have shown only a 10 to 30 percent reduction in fat-free mass. The authors also add that the decline in muscle mass on GLP-1s is several times greater than what\u2019s expected from natural age-related muscle loss.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-muscle-mass-is-so-important\">Why Muscle Mass Is So Important<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Maintaining or increasing muscle mass is crucial\u2014especially as we grow older, as well as to promote optimal weight loss outcomes (whether or not you\u2019re on GLP-1 meds). \u201cPreserving muscle mass is vital for overall strength, mobility, and longevity,\u201d says Dr. Sharp. \u201cAdditionally, adequate muscle mass helps maintain bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis, which is particularly important for aging women.\u201d She adds that rebuilding lost skeletal muscle becomes more challenging over time, which underscores the importance of building and preserving your muscle mass as early as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2823964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 issue<\/a> of <em>JAMA<\/em>, excessive muscle loss while losing weight\u2014which GLP-1s appear to instigate\u2014is also associated with an increased risk of disability, hip fracture, and mortality in older populations.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-preserve-muscle-mass-when-taking-glp-1-medications\">How to Preserve Muscle Mass When Taking GLP-1 Medications<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Although some muscle loss is expected when taking GLP-1s, it\u2019s possible to keep it to a minimum\u2014namely by heeding the expert-approved tips below.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-amp-up-your-protein-intake\">1. Amp Up Your Protein Intake<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Protein is the name of the game not only to build and maintain muscle but also to support weight loss, body composition, and greater health. In her practice, Dr. Sharp and her team of dietitians typically advise aiming for 35 percent of daily macronutrient intake to come from protein, which can help maintain skeletal muscle mass while losing weight. Some experts also cite <a href=\"https:\/\/health.osu.edu\/wellness\/exercise-and-nutrition\/glp1-foods-to-limit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60 grams of protein<\/a> daily as the minimum you need to preserve muscle, yet the exact number will depend on a range of personalized factors.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To reach and track your protein goals, it can help to use a food diary or app to help you calculate your macros. Keep Cardio to a Minimum<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While cardio is great for cardiovascular health and a popular form of exercise to burn calories, too much of it\u2014especially without resistance training\u2014could actually backfire, says\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jackcityfitness.com\/trainer\/marshall-weber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marshall Weber, CPT<\/a>, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackcityfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack City Fitness<\/a> in Boise, Idaho. \u201cDoing too much cardio can leave you with muscle loss, and that is without the GLP-1 even present,\u201d he warns. As such, he recommends that people on GLP-1 meds limit cardio to only 2 to 3 sessions per week.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-strength-train\">3. Strength Train<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>To prevent muscle loss while on GLP-1 medications, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/natural-glp1\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">consuming enough protein<\/a> and dialing up your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/health-benefits-of-strength-training\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">strength training<\/a> makes for a perfect match. \u201cI recommend weight-bearing or resistance exercises at least 3 to 4 times per week to maintain muscle mass and preserve strength, which is key for longevity,\u201d says Dr. Sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Weber agrees, saying 3 to 4 strength training sessions a week is key to minimizing muscle loss\u2014and perhaps even building muscle while taking GLP-1 meds. \u201cTo train your body more effectively and allow it to develop helpful muscles, try using more compound movements in your strength training,\u201d he advises. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.physio-pedia.com\/Compound_Exercises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Compound exercises<\/a> involve using several muscle groups at once, and include the likes of push-ups, squats, chin-ups, and dips.)<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-rest-well\">4. Rest Well<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>As important as it is to do weight-bearing exercises to combat muscle loss, on the other side of the coin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> is equally as crucial. \u201cLong gone are the days where getting your 5 [strength] sessions in a week is ethical or helpful,\u201d Weber shares. \u201cThe body does some of its most important work while we rest, and even while we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>.
