Androgens, or male hormones (which are naturally present within all genders), \u201ctend to be the biggest cause of hair thinning as they can reduce growth phases and create thinner hair strands,\u201d she explains. Hormonal changes also disrupt the hair life cycle by extending the resting cycle, adds trichologist Kerry Yates, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colour-collective.com\/\">Colour Collective<\/a>. This results in hair that looks thinner and in poorer condition overall. The end result: thin hair (and potentially other side effects of fight-or-flight mode, including but not limited to digestive distress, breakouts, and poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In addition, your genes may increase the likelihood of experiencing hair thinning. \u201cMany individuals find that family members also experience hair thinning or sensitivity to androgens,\u201d notes Dr. Green.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hair-thinning-vs-hair-loss\">Hair Thinning vs. Hair Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Curious about the difference between hair thinning and hair loss? The former occurs when your hair becomes less dense and voluminous, whereas the latter involves hair falling out at the root and impediments to hair growth. (FWIW, some loose strands are expected: The American Academy of Dermatology notes that it\u2019s typical to shed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/hair-loss\/insider\/shedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50 to 100 hairs daily<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Hair thinning and hair loss may occur simultaneously, yet the experiences and their causes are sometimes, but not always, interchangeable. Per Dr. Green, hair loss may be caused by additional factors such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Autoimmune disorders such as alopecia areata, in which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-immune-system-works\/\">immune system<\/a> attacks hair follicles leading to sudden hair loss and bald patches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain medical conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surgeries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Yates explains that malnourishment from aggressive diets can trigger hair loss. \u201cThey can cause the body to shut down support for non-essential functions like [supporting] the hair follicle,\u201d she shares. \u201cThe follicle then goes into the resting phase, causing an aggressive fall out with no new regrowth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-normal-is-hair-thinning\">How \u2018Normal\u2019 Is Hair Thinning?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Hair thinning in women is both normal and expected, largely on account of biological aging and hormonal shifts. \u201cEstrogen and progesterone are two [female] hormones that work to keep hair in the resting stage and prevent it from moving to the shedding stage,\u201d Dr. Green explains. \u201cAs women age and undergo menopause, these hormone levels drop, leading to short growth phases and thinner hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a39892\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a39892;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/hair-thinning-.jpg\" alt=\"Hair thinning\" class=\"wp-image-39966 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Not yet at this life milestone and still experiencing significant changes in the thickness of your hair? For instance, they can decipher if your hair thinning or loss is in the \u2018normal range\u2019 or if a condition\u2014such as alopecia areata or telogen effluvium\u2014is present. The latter is \u201ccharacterized by sudden, excessive shedding and can be triggered by physical or emotional stressors such as medical conditions like hypothyroidism, infections, surgeries, and chronic stress,\u201d Dr. Green explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-tips-to-stop-hair-thinning-and-boost-hair-growth\">4 Tips to Stop Hair Thinning and Boost Hair Growth<\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-eat-your-way-to-healthy-hair\">1. Eat Your Way to Healthy Hair<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-hair-growth\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">The quality of your diet <\/a>impacts the state of your mind, mood, sleep, skin, physical strength, and so on and so forth. You might be able to halt hair thinning and loss by adopting some of the tips shared above, or perhaps your hair requires more significant interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Green shares a few medications that can help stop or slow down hair thinning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Minoxidil (aka Rogaine): Topically, it lengthens the growth phase of the hair growth cycle and restores inactive hair follicles. Orally, which Dr. Green notes is used off-label and in low doses, it strengthens hair follicles and promotes hair growth and retention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Propecia (finasteride): \u201cIt is an FDA-approved oral medication that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with hair follicle miniaturization,\u201d she explains. Though it\u2019s yet to be FDA\u2013approved for women, it\u2019s often prescribed off-label to stave off women\u2019s hair loss (limited to those who don\u2019t plan on getting pregnant soon).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dutasteride: According to Dr. Green, this oral medication blocks DHT and helps increase hair density and growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spironolactone: \u201cSpironolactone is an oral medication that slows the production of androgens, or male hormones, to promote hair retention and growth,\u201d the derm explains. It\u2019s also commonly prescribed to women to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-hormonal-acne\/\">hormonal acne<\/a> at bay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hormone replacement therapy: Dr. Green says this option can be beneficial for women experiencing menopausal hair loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>In addition, she cites platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments as a gold standard to combat hair thinning and loss. With this safe and innovative hair restoration treatment, \u201cA sample of blood is taken from the patient and spun down to remove the PRP rich in growth factors and proteins necessary for promoting tissue regeneration and healing in hair follicles,\u201d Dr. Green explains. \u201cThe PRP is then injected back into the patient&#8217;s scalp to thicken hair, reduce shedding, and increase hair growth.\u201d She says an initial series of 4 monthly PRP treatments, followed by regular maintenance sessions, can help maximize the longevity and effects of PRP to achieve thicker, healthier
