While destigmatizing vaginal health talk is great, there\u2019s still much to unpack about how it works and more importantly, how to take care of it. After all, keeping a healthy vagina is more than switching over to cotton underwear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This article explains what the vaginal microbiome is, how it works, answers whether or not it is self-cleaning, and provides tips on how to keep your vagina healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-vaginal-microbiome\">What is the vaginal microbiome?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcimb.2021.631972\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaginal microbiome<\/a> is a dynamic micro-ecosystem of billions of bacteria. Its living community of microbes fluctuates throughout the menstrual and life cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one of several microbiome environments that live within the body. Some examples of other microbiomes include the gut and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skin-microbiome-test\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">skin microbiomes<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Most microbiomes rely on bacterial diversity for optimal health. For instance, diversity or a variety of different types of friendly bacteria are required for a healthy functioning gut microbiome.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But when it comes to the vaginal microbiome, research shows that diversity isn\u2019t always best. In fact, too much diversity in the vaginal ecosystem is associated with increased risk for certain health conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa043802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bacterial vaginosis<\/a>, a condition that affects nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17621244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30% of women<\/a> in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A healthy vaginal microbiome cares less about diversity and more about abundance of vaginal-friendly bacteria, like <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> spp., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9366906\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bacteria that makes up about 95%<\/a> of the vaginal microbiome.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-the-vaginal-microbiome-works\">How the vaginal microbiome works<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the vaginal microbiome is to maintain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vaginal-health\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">vaginal health<\/a> and protect its host (you) from disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In fact, the friendly bacteria within the vaginal microbiome act as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6743080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first line of defense<\/a>. It works by competing with unfriendly bacteria for nutrients and space within the microbiome.
