For instance, if you\u2019ve been nervous to address some signs of vaginal imbalance or have otherwise missed some routine gyno appointments, consider this your cue to get on top of things, stat.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to discover the ins and outs of vaginal health\u2014meaning what\u2019s normal and what could be cause for concern\u2014as guided by <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.mountsinai.org\/cynthia-abraham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cynthia Abraham, MD, FACOG<\/a>, a board-certified OB-GYN with Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-a-healthy-vaginal-environment-look-like\">What Does a Healthy Vaginal Environment Look Like?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Before we dive into the key indicators suggesting that your vaginal health could use improvement, let\u2019s first cover how to know if your vagina is healthy and balanced. \u201cPink, lubricated vaginal tissue and no abnormal vaginal discharge are key signs of a healthy vaginal environment,\u201d says Dr. Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/is-vaginal-discharge-normal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">vaginal discharge<\/a> is totally normal and expected. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/vaginal-discharge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom<\/a>, vaginal fluid keeps this sexual organ clean and moist while protecting against infection. It also helps to balance the vaginal microbiome. That said, the color, consistency, and odor of vaginal discharge should fall within certain standards for it to be healthy and A-okay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Color: clear or milky white<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistency: thin and slippery to thick<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Odor: faint (not foul or fishy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The markers above will vary from one woman to the next\u2014as well as based on personal factors like age, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">menstruation status<\/a> and point in your cycle, and overall hormonal health.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-your-vaginal-health-could-be-off\">Signs Your Vaginal Health Could Be Off<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty easy to spot signs of a less-than-healthy vaginal environment. Dr. Abraham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/experts-and-stories\/the-latest\/think-you-have-a-vaginal-infection-heres-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cites<\/a> the following as the key symptoms of vaginal imbalances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recurrent infections, including yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abnormal discharge (i.e., if it\u2019s malodorous and\/or not clear or white)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-is-my-vagina-itchy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Itching<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstances in which symptoms do not improve after over-the-counter antifungals and steroids,\u201d she continues, will warrant medical attention. \u201cIt\u2019s important to see a gynecologist if there\u2019s no resolution in symptoms within 72 hours of starting over-the-counter treatment.\u201d In some cases, continued symptoms may signal the presence of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or another underlying health condition.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>An absence of vaginal moisture may also signal that your vaginal environment isn\u2019t in peak shape and\/or that you\u2019re dealing with hormonal imbalances. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/causes-of-vaginal-dryness\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Vaginal dryness<\/a> may be associated with major life stages and events\u2014with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/natural-relief-from-menopause-symptoms\/\">menopause<\/a> perhaps most well-known among them\u2014on account of dips in estrogen. \u201cEstrogen is a hormone released by the ovaries that helps maintain vaginal lubrication, elasticity, and thickness,\u201d Dr. Abraham previously told HUM. \u201cLow estrogen levels can also occur after childbirth and with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-breastfeeding\/\">breastfeeding<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In addition, vaginal dryness, thinning, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a> may also reflect imbalances in the vaginal microbiome. For instance, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24080849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2014 study<\/a> in the journal <em>Menopause<\/em> showed that a low abundance of certain <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> bacteria strains was associated with vulvovaginal atrophy (a common condition in which the vaginal lining dries and thins out, leading to pain and discomfort).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A few other signs and events may also let you know that it\u2019s time to see your gynecologist, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The presence of any bumps, sores, discoloration, and similar abnormalities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major changes in your menstrual cycle and\/or irregular bleeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain during sexual activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6c3b1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6c3b1;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Vaginal-Health-Check-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-.jpg\" alt=\"Vaginal Health \" class=\"wp-image-38926 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-tips-to-promote-vaginal-health-and-sexual-wellness\">8 Tips to Promote Vaginal Health and Sexual Wellness<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all too common for women to shy away from merely talking about vaginal health, as well as investigating things on their own\u2014especially if an issue (and consequent embarrassment or fear) arises. However, it\u2019s important to remember that you\u2019re not alone and you don\u2019t need to engage in negative self-talk or cave into a shame spiral. After all, neither will help you get your vaginal health\u2014not to mention mental health\u2014back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As is the case with any health matters, it\u2019s crucial to be proactive and take necessary precautions sooner than later. Here are 8 of Dr. Abraham\u2019s top suggestions to support vaginal and sexual health on a routine basis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wear loose cotton underwear for breathability and comfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use soap and water when bathing and never apply soap inside your vagina<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid douching, which can wreak havoc on your vaginal microbiome and is even associated with an <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20215951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased risk of adverse gynecological health outcomes<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-guide-to-choosing-the-best-probiotic-for-you\/\">probiotics<\/a> (such as HUM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/54\/private-party-vaginal-probiotic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Private Party<\/a>) to support healthy bacterial balance and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35967876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve immune defenses<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice safe sex, namely by using condoms to prevent new organisms from entering your vagina<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urinate after sexual intercourse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-sex-toys\/\">sex toys<\/a> thoroughly after each use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consulting your gynecologist as needed <em>and<\/em> on a routine basis<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>On this last point, Dr. Abraham reminds us that you need to go beyond making a gynecological appointment only when something seems off down there. \u201cIt is very important that patients see the gynecologist annually,\u201d she shares. \u201cHowever, PAP smears do not need to be performed annually.
