Perhaps the thought of a decadent dessert is enough to make you race to the nearest bakery, or maybe a salty bag of chips seems to call your name like clockwork. While a few treats here and there won\u2019t do much harm (including throughout the holiday season, when eating for joy and merriment is very much called for), cravings can grow into bigger health issues if they persist\u2014and you simply can\u2019t resist\u2014over long periods of time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That said, some rumors are swirling around positing that specific amino acids can sweep in to curb your strongest cravings. Apparently, this could apply whether they\u2019re for sugar, carbs, or salty foods\u2014or even depending on the type of snacker you are (think: stressed, fatigued, comfort-seeking, and the like). But is there any merit to them?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In search of answers about the connection between amino acids and cravings\u2014as well as how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> fits into the larger question\u2014we reached out to Brooklyn\u2013based dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionwithmaddie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maddie Pasquariello, MS, RD<\/a>, of <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/eastcoasthealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">East Coast Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-a-lack-of-certain-amino-acids-trigger-specific-food-cravings\">Can a lack of certain amino acids trigger specific food cravings?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>First, Pasquariello offers a quick recap of what amino acids are in the context of cravings. \u201cAmino acids are the building blocks of protein and are components of hormones, neurotransmitters, and more. As a result, our reward systems are linked to protein intake,\u201d she explains. It seems like amino acids and cravings could be connected since we tend to experience pleasure by indulging in them\u2026 but the dietitian says the link isn\u2019t terribly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the evidence is very limited when it comes to whether a specific amino acid deficiency can trigger cravings, diets deficient in protein-rich foods in general can lead to cravings\u2014including for foods that contain the amino acids the diet might be lacking,\u201d she clarifies. Carb cravings are another such manifestation, which arise when the body seeks a quick (and ideally tasty) source of fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bcac95\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bcac95;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Amino-Acids-The-wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Amino Acids\" class=\"wp-image-38632 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>As far as the research to date goes around specific amino acids, cravings, and satiety, Pasquariello calls out one <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15001067\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small study on tryptophan<\/a>. It found that \u201ca reduction in the tryptophan\/large neutral amino acid (LNAA) ratio\u2014which can be caused by consuming meals high in protein\u2014can reduce the overall desire to binge eat among women.\u201d As such, it suggests a possible link between amino acid intake and strong urges to acquiesce to cravings.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Other amino acids, she continues, have been studied in the context of cravings\u2014yet the jury is out since the bulk lack clear and conclusive evidence. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tyrosine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phenylalanine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methionine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Theanine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother amino acid frequently discussed as a possible aid to reduce cravings is glutamine,\u201d Pasquariello continues. She says it\u2019s gained popularity in the craving conversation since it shows promise to encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a> in people with diabetes specifically. However, evidence is lacking for those who have blood sugar levels within normal ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-tips-to-curb-your-strongest-cravings\">5 tips to curb your strongest cravings<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If you want to move the needle on your food cravings with significant success, heed the helpful, healthy dietitian-approved hacks below.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-sleep-well-and-de-stress\">1. Sleep well and de-stress<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>This tip\u2019s a no-brainer for your cravings and overall well-being alike. Per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5373497\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018 study<\/a> in the journal <em>Obesity<\/em>, chronic stress and higher levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\">cortisol<\/a> predict food cravings and future weight gain. And ICYMI, your circadian cycles regulate not only your sleep-wake times but also your appetite. They also influence certain hormones in the endocrine system\u2014including the hunger and satiety hormones of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ghrelin-and-leptin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">ghrelin and leptin<\/a>, respectively. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">Sleep<\/a> deprivation (as well as stress) can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/junk-food-cravings-tied-to-hormones-circadian-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suppress leptin and increase ghrelin<\/a>, thus spiking hunger for processed, less-than-healthy foods.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since these lifestyle habits can wreak havoc on your hunger cues, find ways to improve both when you\u2019re under duress. Mindful movement, deep breathing, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bedtime-routine\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">solid bedtime routine<\/a> are only a few of the countless self-care modalities at your disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-prioritize-protein\">2. Prioritize protein<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>As far as amino acids and cravings go, Pasquriello ultimately advises against seeking out the aminos on their own (via specific foods or solo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-and-supplements-should-i-take\/\">supplements<\/a>). \u201cA healthy, nutrient-dense diet typically contains all of the essential amino acids that the body needs to thrive, so there&#8217;s no reason for most people to seek out supplementation or specific sources of a given amino acid,\u201d she shares. \u201cIn fact, I would venture that doing so could bring on much more stress (and work!) than is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That said, making sure you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/protein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">get enough protein<\/a> in your broader diet\u2014alongside carbs, healthy fat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>, water, vitamins, and minerals\u2014may just be the best hack for cravings available. In addition to being inherently satiating, protein \u201cis also vital for maintaining a healthy body weight, regulating our organ systems (as well as immunity and metabolism), maintaining cell structure and function, and forming muscle,\u201d Pasquariello continues.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Circling back to amino acids, it\u2019s important to ensure that you get all of them to reap the benefits from complete proteins. Animal foods will cover your bases easily, yet Pasquariello notes that vegetarians and plant-based eaters may need to take more special care. However, it\u2019s absolutely possible to get all amino acids <em>and<\/em> adequate protein on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/plant-based-diet-for-beginners\/\">plant-based diet<\/a>. \u201cFor instance, buckwheat, chia, and hemp seeds are all complete proteins on their own,\u201d Pasquariello shares, \u201cor you can opt for complete protein combinations like hummus and pita, peanut butter on toast, or rice and beans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Mixed into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/post-workout-smoothie-recipes\/\">smoothie<\/a> or baked into treats, a plant-based protein powder like HUM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/66\/core-strength\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Core Strength<\/a> can help you increase your complete protein intake ease. From there, it can be easier to break the cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-adopt-mindful-eating-habits\">4. Adopt mindful eating habits<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Some of Pasquariello\u2019s foolproof mindful eating tips to reduce cravings and diminish emotional eating patterns include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taking breaths between bites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding distractions at mealtime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introducing mindset shifts like 80\/20 eating (i.e., aiming for nutrient-dense fare at least 80 percent of the time)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/selfcare-selfharm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reducing any noise<\/a> around food, nutrition, and weight that doesn\u2019t serve you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-dont-deprive-yourself-or-demonize-the-craving\">5. Don\u2019t deprive yourself (or demonize the craving)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Deprivation is a no-go\u2014full stop. By sticking to a healthy, balanced diet to begin with, you\u2019ll have a better shot at keeping cravings for less healthy fare at bay. However, it can be in your best interest to allow yourself the occasional treat\u2026 so long as you do so in moderation. \u201cIt&#8217;s well-proven that by ignoring your cravings, your brain fixates on them even more, so trying to starve them out or swapping in an alternative may not cut it,\u201d Pasquariello notes.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-amino-acid-takeaway\">The Amino Acid takeaway&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>In case you\u2019ve heard that you can squash your cravings by prioritizing certain amino acids above others, doing so may prove to create more work (and potential stress) than any palpable rewards. Instead, getting familiar with the true cause of your cravings\u2014whether they\u2019re rooted in lifestyle habits, emotional triggers, certain environments, or dietary gaps\u2014can allow you to reduce their strength once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you find your cravings to be stronger than you can manage on your own, or if you think you\u2019re deficient in a particular nutrient that could be driving intense hunger pangs, consult a physician or dietitian. \u201cThey&#8217;ll conduct blood work and determine what specifically might be lacking in your diet, if anything,\u201d says Pasquariello.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>By and large, however, Pasquariello notes that the magic trick to overcoming your cravings is probably simpler than it seems.
