I bet this line sounds pretty familiar. <em>Sure, I can have pizza tonight because tomorrow I\u2019m starting my strict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-plate\/\">paleo<\/a> plan<\/em>, I\u2019ve thought. <em>Better make sure it\u2019s all gone tonight, though, so I\u2019m not tempted<\/em>. It\u2019s a lovely thought, sure, but it\u2019s hard to go from a pizza pie for one to uber healthy overnight.\n\nWhether you want to eat healthier or go to the gym more, making a big change may seem like it\u2019s the way to go\u2014but you\u2019re probably setting yourself up for failure. Here\u2019s a better way to change your habits.\n<h2>Start Small<\/h2>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjfogg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BJ Fogg, PhD<\/a>, says the reason for starting small is simple. People are more successful taking this route, because in general small changes are easier to enact than big changes.\n<h3>What does this mean for you?<\/h3>\nWhat are you working toward? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-way-to-lose-weight-fats-carbs\/\">Weight loss<\/a>? Eating healthier? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-rhodiola-rosea\/\">Reducing stress<\/a>? First, decide what you want the outcome to be, then figure out behaviors that will help you get there. The more specific you are, the better.\n\nFor instance, if you want to have a healthier diet, start by eating an extra serving of green veggies at dinner.\n\nThe next step: Make it as easy as possible to achieve (e.g., by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/batch-cooking-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">batch cooking<\/a> veggies at the beginning of the week.)\n\nFinally, trigger the new behavior you want. Try piggybacking it onto a behavior you already do every day. (<em>Every time I brush my teeth, I\u2019ll do 15 air squats<\/em>.)\n<h2>Success begets&nbsp;Success<\/h2>\n\u201cSuccess leads to success,\u201d says Fogg. \u201cSo when you succeed at something small, it has the effect of getting people to change other habits.\u201d Over time, your ability to change increases. Plus, when you feel successful, your motivation to continue increases. When people change small things, they start to see themselves in a different way. Shifts in their identity and can lead to other positive changes, because they begin acting in a way they believe their new identity would behave.\n<h2>Change Is a Skill<\/h2>\nThe most common outcomes people want are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a> and stress reduction, says Fogg. It can be tempting to take a short-term view (hello, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/7-extreme-diets-rated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fad diets<\/a>), but for real success you need to look at it long term. \u201cStart with a new habit, something you actually want,\u201d says Fogg. Focus on practicing and making it a skill. If your goal is to learn to play the piano, start with songs you like. If you want to eat more veggies, don\u2019t force yourself to eat Brussels sprouts if you hate them; choose a veggie you actually enjoy. You\u2019ll be more successful this way. \u201cThe best way to view it is some of these changes are long-term endeavors, and change is a skill.\u201d It all goes back to starting small.\n\nPractice the skills of change and you\u2019ll be an unstoppable, goal-crushing, ninja-warrior mermaid in no time.\n<div  class=\"products-block -mx-4 md:mx-0 my-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<a
