I\u2019d read that it uses a light, sweeping touch to do the job\u2014and as a lover of deep tissue, hurts-so-good types of massage, I anticipated that I\u2019d consider lymphatic drainage massage to be a (pun alert) waste.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That said, I\u2019m innately curious and always game to try anything once, especially when it comes to beauty and wellness. The timing was right, too. I\u2019d just returned from a trip abroad and was feeling worse for wear, namely on account of jet lag and subsisting on takeout and restaurant fare for 10 days (plus some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/travel-constipation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">travel constipation<\/a> for good measure, which this treatment <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32492920\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows promise<\/a> to help alleviate).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Frankly, my mental health hadn\u2019t been in great shape, either. Stress, sadness, and brain fog all made it challenging to go back to my day-to-day routine. But instead of languishing, I made a vow to do everything in my power to get rid of the nasties holding my mind and body back. In addition to moving my body daily, making my own meals from scratch, limiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a> and sugar, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/30-day-meditation-challenge\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">starting the day with meditation<\/a> and journaling, I headed over to Remedy Place to try out lymphatic drainage massage for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"887b68\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #887b68;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Lymphatic-drainage-massage-before-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-jpg.webp\" alt=\"BallancerPro lymphatic massage machine at Remedy Place\" class=\"wp-image-36130 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-lymphatic-drainage-massage-experience\">My Lymphatic Drainage Massage Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Remedy Place employs a compression device called the <a href=\"https:\/\/ballancerpro.com\/aesthetics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BallancerPro<\/a>\u2014rather than a specialist\u2014to facilitate the lymphatic drainage massage. It\u2019s basically a garment that you zip on before it inflates in a wave-like motion from the feet up (it reached just below my bra line), compressing then releasing to increase blood flow and remove waste products from the body.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since I told the staff about my preference for pressure, they programmed the machine to a medium setting. I got zipped up, equipped with noise canceling headphones and an iPad with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-start-meditating\/\">meditation<\/a> specific to lymphatic drainage massage. For an hour&#8217;s time, I let the machine do its thing.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-it-feels-like\">What It Feels Like<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d say that the compression had relatively high pressure, but it didn\u2019t feel uncomfortable or suffocating. (For reference, the \u201csqueezes\u201d were less tight than those from blood pressure checks.) The releases were the most gratifying of all; I definitely felt that *things* were moving around upon each one.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I have pain in my left hip and loved the feeling of compression and release there\u2014as well as at my stomach\u2014in particular. If you\u2019ve ever held a long pigeon pose (or another compression pose) in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-yoga\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">yoga class<\/a>, the juicy openness you feel from getting out of it is pretty similar.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-potential-benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massage\">Potential Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The meditation called out some claimed benefits of lymphatic massage, which I tried to scribe verbatim:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Releasing blockages from daily life stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breaking down toxins in stagnant areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excreting all waste molecules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaving the body younger, purer, and freer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Leary adds onto this list, stating that benefits also include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stimulating the lymphatic system to enhance lymph flow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced swelling and edema, which \u201ccan be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing post-surgical swelling\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boosted immune function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaxation, stress reduction, and improvements in mental well-being<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced energy flow, which can \u201clead to a sense of revitalization and increased vitality\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-meditative-component\">The Meditative Component<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Around the midway point, sounds to induce theta brain wave activity took over, which doubled down on the calming experience. (Theta waves are involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8310425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning and memory<\/a>; increased amplitudes of theta and alpha waves are also linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27504152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced anxiety<\/a>. Moreover, a 2017 study found that participants who listened to binaural beats that induced theta activity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnins.2017.00365\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">achieved brain functions of a meditative state<\/a> after only 10 minutes of exposure.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As someone who never falls asleep spontaneously, I was shocked to find that I was <em>thisclose<\/em> to snoozing by the time the BallancerPro turned off, officially marking the end of my first lymphatic drainage massage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"585353\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #585353;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Lymphatic-drainage-massage-after-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Lymphatic drainage massage with BallancerPro machine\" class=\"wp-image-36131 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-after-my-lymphatic-drainage-massage\">After My Lymphatic Drainage Massage<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Truth be told, I was so blissed out by the time the machine turned off and the meditation was complete that I didn\u2019t want it to end. Despite my many yawns before I even got up, I felt refreshed, lighter, and much more at ease than before my lymphatic drainage massage. (Refreshed, light, and at ease aren\u2019t terms I\u2019d usually use to describe myself at any given time, but in this case, they\u2019re the most apt.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not certain if it was the lymphatic massage, meditation, dark room, or combination of them all that made for such a positive treatment. In any case, I was grateful and believe that they all helped me tap into my parasympathetic nervous system (i.e., \u201crest and digest\u201d mode), whereas I most often operate from the sympathetic nervous system (i.e., \u201cfight or flight\u201d mode).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In sum, I felt light and calm in my mind and body, and carried on with my day in good spirits. And although I\u2019m a lifelong night owl (or a wolf, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/sleep-chronotype-schedule\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">sleep chronotypes<\/a>), I fell asleep before 10:30 p.m. and enjoyed a full night\u2019s rest\u2014the first in well over a week since I\u2019d returned from my travels.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-final-review\">My Final Review<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While I\u2019m careful to not make exaggerated claims or tout \u201cmiracle cures,\u201d I can confidently say that my lymphatic drainage massage left me feeling much better post-treatment than before it. That said, I didn\u2019t experience certain purported benefits\u2014like less cellulite, puffiness, and glowing skin\u2014but I certainly didn\u2019t expect them either after a single treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo maximize and maintain the benefits of lymphatic drainage massage, multiple sessions are typically recommended,\u201d Dr. Leary explains. The sweet spot of how many treatments you\u2019ll need will depend on your individual circumstances and goals. As he continues, \u201cA general guideline is to start with a series of sessions close together\u2014such as once or twice a week for a few weeks\u2014to establish a foundation of lymphatic flow and improvement.\u201d From there, you can proceed with \u201ctune-ups\u201d monthly or as needed to consistently support lymphatic health.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since I was able to feel a marked difference in my overall sense of well-being following just one session, I can only imagine the benefits of integrating lymphatic drainage massage into my ongoing wellness toolkit.
