They play a vital role in everything from growth and reproduction to mood and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Hormones also impact metabolism and appetite\u2014and that\u2019s where ghrelin and leptin come in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOptimal health is related to these \u2018hunger hormones\u2019 and your metabolic reaction to the foods you eat,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/comitemd.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florence Comite, MD,<\/a> an endocrinologist and the founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/comitemd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comite Center for Precision Medicine and Health<\/a> in New York City, Miami Beach, Florida and Palo Alto, California.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Together, leptin and ghrelin regulate our sensations of hunger and satiety by sending signals to our brain, adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nch.org\/doctors\/ammara-a-aziz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ammara Aziz, MD<\/a>, an endocrinologist with Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights, Illinois. When these power players are balanced, our bodies are better able to maintain a consistent weight. Yet if things get too weighed down on one side of the ghrelin vs. leptin seesaw, your appetite and the way your body uses energy can get thrown out of whack.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ahead, learn more about ghrelin and leptin, including how to tell if your levels might fall outside of the \u201cnormal\u201d range. And later: simple strategies you can try today to support balanced hunger hormones.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-ghrelin\">What Is Ghrelin?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Ghrelin is a hormone produced mainly by the stomach. Small amounts are also released by the small intestine, pancreas and brain, Dr. Aziz explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cGhrelin communicates with the brain to let it know that you\u2019re hungry,\u201d adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patriciabannan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Bannan, MS, RDN,<\/a> a dietitian based in Los Angeles and the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Burnout-Balance-Healing-Strategies-Immunity\/dp\/0593232429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>From Burnout to Balance<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhen your stomach is empty or nearing empty, it releases ghrelin. Once you eat a meal or snack and you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/satiating-diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">feel satiated<\/a>, ghrelin levels will fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>To remember that this is the main \u201chunger hormone,\u201d Dr. Comite tells her patients and students to think of \u201cgrrrhelin,\u201d like a growling stomach. This hormone regulates appetite and energy balance to maintain your body weight over time (in addition to other important tasks like immune function). But instead of being released by the stomach like ghrelin, leptin is emitted by our white adipose (aka fat) tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cLeptin\u2019s purpose is to tell the body that you\u2019re full, and it plays an important role in weight maintenance. When you have adequate fuel sources and your body is satisfied, leptin levels will increase to communicate to the brain that you don\u2019t need to consume more energy,\u201d Bannan says. \u201cWhen you\u2019re hungry or unfed, leptin will fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since the level of leptin in our blood is directly related to how much body fat we have, higher levels of leptin are seen in individuals who live in larger bodies. Research shows that the leptin-to-ghrelin ratio\u00a0tends to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8615809\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase with increasing body mass index<\/a> (BMI).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Over time, elevated levels of leptin can lead to leptin resistance, in which the body loses its sensitivity to the hormone. (Psst: This is a very good sign it might be time for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/reverse-dieting\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">reverse diet<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cProlonged fasting associated with intense hunger is likely due to very low leptin levels, especially with weight and fat loss,\u201d Dr. Comite says. \u201cYour body is saying \u2018I\u2019m starving; I\u2019d better eat!\u2019\u201d This is why you may experience intense hunger pangs, cravings, or symptoms of binge eating after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skipping-breakfast-to-lose-weight\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">skipping meals<\/a>, Dr. Comite continues.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-tell-if-your-ghrelin-and-leptin-levels-may-be-imbalanced\">How to Tell If Your Ghrelin and Leptin Levels May Be Imbalanced<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many factors that can impact both ghrelin and leptin levels, including genetics, body fat levels, and an energy deficit,\u201d Bannan says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The only way to directly assess levels of ghrelin and leptin is to get a blood test. However, Dr Aziz says that these tests are rarely performed. Hunger hormone levels are only checked in very specific cases, such as in children who fall under the classification of <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21989-class-iii-obesity-formerly-known-as-morbid-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">class III obesity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re on a calorie-restricted diet, though, cyour ghrelin levels are likely high. This is your body\u2019s savvy way of nudging the brain to feed itself. That said, there are several lifestyle habits that can help your leptin and ghrelin levels stay within healthy ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-balance-your-macros\">1. Balance Your Macros<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Choose meals and snacks that provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, carbohydrates (ideally with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/high-fiber-foods-trader-joes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">some fiber<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">healthy fats<\/a>. Doing so can support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">blood sugar stability<\/a>, which is an important part of avoiding energy spikes and crashes as well as food cravings. \u201cThese balanced meals and snacks will also help your body regulate your natural hunger and fullness cues by supporting ghrelin and leptin balance,\u201d Bannan says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-prioritize-protein\">2. Prioritize Protein<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While all three macronutrients are important, protein is the most effective at suppressing ghrelin, Dr. Comite adds. This means it\u2019s also the most satiating macronutrient of the trio.
