Plus: their expert takes on if these radical weight loss plans really work.<\/em>\n\nSometimes, losing weight can be a daunting, difficult undertaking. It also takes effort and patience to see results\u2014which is probably why extreme diets that promise massive weight loss in a short <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> of time are so appealing.\n\n<em>Sure, I&#8217;ll consume only liquid for 10 days if I can lose a quick 20 pounds<\/em>, you may think. (Trust me, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/eating-disorder-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I&#8217;ve been there<\/a>.) But should you really follow such extreme weight loss methods?\n\nAs a registered dietitian, I&#8217;d like to answer with a resounding no. Keep reading to understand why.\n<h2>7 Extreme Diets, Evaluated By Dietitians<\/h2>\nMy fellow RDs and I rounded up the most extreme diets (from both a dieter&#8217;s and nutritionist&#8217;s perspective), with ratings based on how intense they are.\n<h3>1. Master Cleanse<\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"a28a6f\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a28a6f;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24604 aligncenter not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Extreme-Diets-Master-Cleanse-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Person juicing a lemon to follow the extreme Master Cleanse diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\nKnown to some as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/beyonce-diets-22-day-master-cleanse-vegan-coachella-2019-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Beyonce diet<\/a> (the singer has famously followed it in the past), the Master Cleanse is an all-liquid diet in which you only consume a concoction of:\n<ul>\n \t<li>water<\/li>\n \t<li>maple syrup<\/li>\n \t<li>lemon juice<\/li>\n \t<li>cayenne pepper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nYou drink six to 12 glasses of the mixture every day for 10 days. Additionally, you\u2019re also allowed to sip on salt water and an herbal laxative tea. (Editor\u2019s note: Sounds like fun and as though it wouldn\u2019t interfere with your job\/life at all&#8230;)\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nThey think it&#8217;ll permit you to drop lots of weight\u2014fast.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\n\u201cThis is honestly the worst fad diet,&#8221; begins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/author\/alexc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Caspero, MA, RD<\/a>. &#8220;Not only is it devoid of all nutrients, but none of its health claims can be backed up. After a few days (or day!) on the Master Cleanse, you can expect to be hangry, tired, and grouchy.\u201d\n\nThat\u2019s because the diet is so low in calories that your cells aren\u2019t getting any energy. \u201cCalories are often thought of in negative terms, but we need calories in the form of energy to survive,\u201d Alex adds. Further, on the Master Cleanse Diet, you\u2019ll drastically lose weight\u2014but it\u2019s not the weight you want to lose.\n\n\u201cWater weight is different than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/target-belly-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fat loss<\/a>, which is different than muscle loss,\u201d she continues. \u201cWhen you reduce calories to almost nothing, you&#8217;ll lose weight mostly in the form of water and muscle loss.\u201d\n\n\u201cThis diet plan gets a big fat F from me,&#8221; Alex concludes. &#8220;You can expect most of the weight to return after you resume eating normal food.&#8221;\n\nIn sum, this is one (perhaps the only?) instance in which you shouldn&#8217;t do as Beyonce does.\n<h3><strong>2. Juice Cleanse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"8e8541\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8e8541;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6109 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/juice-cleanse-e1500313057515.jpg\" alt=\"Glasses of juice for juice cleanse\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\nA strict juice cleanse is another extreme all-liquid diet, in which you consume only fruit and vegetable juices. The majority of juice cleanses involve drinking six to eight juices per day for up to 10 days.\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nProponents of juice cleanses say that juicing gives your digestive tract a break and can help you lose weight quickly and detoxify.\n\nHowever, other people may simply do it as a fast way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/eat-the-rainbow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get in more fruits and vegetables<\/a>.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\n\u201cSadly, the juice industry has convinced the American public that drinking green juice will help them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/easy-ways-to-detox-your-body-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detox the body<\/a>. However, this isn&#8217;t the whole truth,\u201d Alex says. \u201cYes, juice contains nutrients in the form of fruits and vegetables, but so do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/videos\/what-i-eat-in-a-day-on-a-whole-foods-plant-based-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whole foods<\/a>.\u201d\n\nEssentially, you\u2019re better off eating whole fruits and vegetables, which contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> that helps you feel full.\n\nPlus, the high fructose content of most juices can make you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-foods-that-cause-bloating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feel bloated<\/a> and can even cause diarrhea.\n\n\u201cLastly, juicing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-eat-more-sustainably\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">produces a lot of food waste<\/a>,&#8221; Alex adds. &#8220;Imagine how much pulp you throw away for one eight-ounce juice. Skip the juice, eat the produce instead, and save your money.&#8221;\n<h3>3. Grapefruit Diet<\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"a25e4c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a25e4c;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6112 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/grapefruit-e1500313306237.jpg\" alt=\"Eating grapefruit for weight loss\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\nOn this popular yet still somewhat extreme way to lose weight, you consume half a grapefruit before every meal. You eat your meals at normal times, but forego dessert, bread, and white vegetables. Meanwhile, you triple your intake of meat and other vegetables.\n\nAdditional suggestions for the diet include going four hours between protein-based meals and starch-based meals.\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nSome believe that grapefruits can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/supplement-to-reduce-cravings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help reduce appetite<\/a> and promote weight loss by providing fat-burning enzymes. There\u2019s also the lure of 10-pound weight loss in only 12 days.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\nEating a half grapefruit before a meal may help you eat less because of the fiber and water content found in the fruit. So, theoretically, it could help you lose weight over time.\n\nHowever, the diet doesn&#8217;t help you change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-eating-nutrition-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your eating habits<\/a>. So although you&#8217;re eating a healthy fruit more often in your diet, the meals that follow may continue to be not so healthy for you.\n\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> Grapefruits interfere with many medications, so be sure to check with your doctor before you decide to follow through with this extreme diet plan.\n<h3><strong>4. Souping<\/strong><\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"a57240\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a57240;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6114 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/souping-e1500313763987.jpg\" alt=\"Vegetable soups for weight loss\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\n\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/souping-review\/\">Souping<\/a> is basically juicing for the winter crowd,\u201d Alex explains. \u201cInstead of gulping down green elixirs, you\u2019ll sip on so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-detox-foods\/\">detox<\/a> soups throughout the day.\u201d\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nThey see it as a healthier, quicker weight-loss program than juicing\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\n\u201cWhile soup is a really great food and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vegan-butternut-squash-soup-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy way to get nutrients in<\/a>, soup cleanses tend to be quite low in calories,&#8221; Alex continues.\n\nTypically you&#8217;ll consume around 1,200 calories a day on a soup cleanse. \u201cWhile you&#8217;ll lose weight with 1,200 calories, it&#8217;s not very sustainable and you&#8217;re more likely to lose muscle mass.\u201d\n<h3><strong>5. Cabbage Soup Diet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"d4c493\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d4c493;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6110 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cabbage-soup-e1500313251640.jpg\" alt=\"Bowl of cabbage soup for dieting\" width=\"600\" height=\"395\" \/>\n<h4><strong>What it is:<\/strong><\/h4>\nThis extreme diet plan hearkens all the way back to the 1950s.\n\n&#8220;The theory behind this diet is that eating cabbage soup regularly\u2014in place of one or two meals a day\u2014can help you shed weight,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/tobyamidornutrition.com\/\">Toby Amidor, MS, RD<\/a>, a nutrition expert and author of <em>The Greek Yogurt Kitchen: More Than 130 Delicious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Day<\/em>.\n\nYou eat cabbage soup every day for most\u2014if not all\u2014of your meals for seven days.\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nSince cabbage is a diuretic, people think that increasing their cabbage intake can help shed water weight.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\n\u201cAn updated version of the cabbage soup diet was released, which is more in line with healthy eating patterns recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans,&#8221; Toby shares.\n\n&#8220;Weight loss is about one to two pounds per week, which is in line with the NIH standards for a safe rate of weight loss,\u201d she explains. But like most crash diets, the cabbage soup diet isn\u2019t sustainable and you\u2019ll likely gain back all the weight you lost\u2014and maybe even more.\n\nPlus, all that cabbage soup has gotta make you&#8230; ahem&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rather flatulent<\/a>.\n<h3><strong>6. Tapeworm Diet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"e9d8db\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e9d8db;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6116 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/tapeworm.jpg\" alt=\"A tapeworm for an extreme diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\nWith this beyond extreme way to lose weight, you eat a tapeworm (or the larvae of a tapeworm) so it can grow inside you. Yep&#8230;\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nThe tapeworm will reduce the calories that your body absorbs, so you can still eat the same amount and lose weight.\n\n\u201cMany dieters think they&#8217;ll magically lose weight without any side effects and that it\u2019s \u2018no big deal,\u2019\u201d Toby says.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\nHello: There&#8217;s a literal parasite living in your gastrointestinal system! The tapeworm eats gobbled-up food and nutrients that you need for health and well-being.\n\nOn this extreme diet plan, \u201cYou lose weight due to lack of nourishment yet develop symptoms such as nausea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-different-types-of-poop-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diarrhea<\/a>, fatigue, and abdominal pain,\u201d she adds. Since the tapeworm is ingesting the nutrients you need, it can cause serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/reasons-to-take-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vitamin and mineral deficiencies<\/a> with unpleasant side effects, including bone pain and extreme stress.\n\nDecide you want that tapeworm out of you? You&#8217;ll have to give your doctor a stool sample so they can determine the type of tapeworm you ingested. Then, they&#8217;ll prescribe an anti-parasitic along with an antibiotic because\u2014fun fact\u2014tapeworms can cause bleeding in your intestines, and that can lead to infection.\n\nAll said, avoid this extreme weight loss method at all costs.\n<h3><strong>7. Baby Food Diet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<img data-dominant-color=\"c49b55\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c49b55;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6113 size-full not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/babyfood-e1500313459467.jpg\" alt=\"Baby food jars for weight loss\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<h4>What it is:<\/h4>\nYou eat 14 jars of baby food throughout the day. If you&#8217;d like, you can also add in one meal of lean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> and veggies.\n<h4>Why people try it:<\/h4>\nIt requires virtually no prep, is convenient on-the-go, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-plate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">controls your portions<\/a>\u00a0to encourage rapid weight loss.\n<h4>A Dietitian&#8217;s Take on This Extreme Diet:<\/h4>\n\u201cJars of baby food typically range from 30 to 100 calories each,\u201d Toby shares. \u201cIf you choose to eat baby food all day for every meal, you may start feeling deprived of the variety of textures from a full meal.\u201d\n\nPlus, flavors can also be super bland, which could potentially lead to overeating.\n\nAs for results in terms of extreme weight loss? \u201cIt depends on the calories in versus calories out, and also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-often-should-you-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amount of activity and exercise you do<\/a>. You will, however, be able to find organic baby food and many are gluten-free.\u201d\n\nSo, you know, there\u2019s that.\n<h2>Healthier Ways to Lose Weight<\/h2>\nOur consensus? Ditch the extreme diets and opt for long-lasting, sustainable weight loss instead.\n\n&#8220;When you lose weight, you want to focus mainly on fat loss and preserving muscle mass,&#8221; Alex tells us. Conversely, the extreme weight loss methods above mainly result in the loss of water weight, which you&#8217;ll likely regain it when you stop the crash diet.\n\nInstead, Alex recommends sticking to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-not-to-diet-by-dr-michael-greger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whole foods-based diet<\/a> with:\n<ul>\n \t<li>lots of fruits and veggies<\/li>\n \t<li>lean protein<\/li>\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-eating-fat-doesnt-make-you-gain-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy fats<\/a><\/li>\n \t<li>some whole grains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nFrom there, be sure to eat enough, as well. Alex says most women need between 1,400 and 1,600 calories a day.
