They slow digestion, help balance blood sugar, and remove excess cholesterol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insoluble fibers are found in the skin of fruits and vegetables, as well as in whole grains. They <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002136.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">add bulk to stool<\/a> and make bowel movements easier to pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-fiber-do-i-need-each-day\">How Much Fiber Do I Need Each Day?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The amount of fiber you need each day varies from person to person. Generally, most people require somewhere between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6124841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19 to 38 grams per day<\/a>. Women typically need 26 grams and men need 38 grams of fiber daily.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As we age, the recommended amount of fiber decreases due to changes in our digestion, meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK559033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adults over 50 do not require as much<\/a>. Women over 50 need 21 grams and men over 50 need 30 grams. Our digestion becomes slower as we age, making us more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-relieve-constipation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">prone to constipation<\/a>. Eating too much fiber can cause or worsen constipation, so it\u2019s recommended that older adults eat a few grams less than younger adults.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that when increasing your fiber intake, slow and steady wins the race. Consuming more fiber than your body is used to in one sitting can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-foods-for-bloating\/\">bloating<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\">gas<\/a>, and constipation.
