However, it doesn\u2019t just impact the internal systems of the body\u2014it can impact our external factors like the skin, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-beauty-sleep-a-real-thing\">Is Beauty Sleep a Real Thing?<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>According to Alex Savy, a certified sleep science coach and the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepingocean.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SleepingOcean<\/a>, beauty sleep is absolutely a real thing. But it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that one good night\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> can result in a changed appearance. \u201cRestful sleep is needed for proper cell and tissue restoration,\u201d he explains, adding that this also applies to skin cells and hair follicles. \u201cPoor sleep can <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20678867\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affect collagen production<\/a> and the skin\u2019s natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/skin-barrier\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">protective barrier function<\/a>, leading to more obvious wrinkles, dullness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a>, and breakouts,\u201d he explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>One of the leading causes of poor sleep is stress, which Dr. Sperling says can also have a major impact on our looks.
