Everything from the timing of our last meal to how quickly we eat our food impacts the body\u2019s digestive processes. But what about your sleeping position? Does that affect your digestive system? It turns out that how you choose to snooze can either support a more comfortable digestive process or potentially trigger certain side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to discover the best sleeping positions for digestion (as well as the worst), according to a gastroenterologist.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-sleeping-position-affect-digestion\">Does Sleeping Position Affect Digestion?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>In short, not exactly. \u201cSleeping position doesn&#8217;t affect your digestion [directly] because the processes are enzymatic,\u201d explains Dr. Sonpol. \u201cThese kinds of processes are independent of factors like gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, certain sleeping positions <em>can<\/em> cause some unwelcome side effects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-heartburn\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">heartburn<\/a>, bloating, and nausea. According to Dr. Sonpol, there are a few that rise above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sleeping-on-an-incline\">Sleeping On an Incline<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re prone to heartburn, Dr. Sonpol says the best thing you can do is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> with your shoulders and head on a slight incline. While you may be tempted to simply stack your pillows, you&#8217;ll need something that will lift your shoulders and chest too. Look for a wedge pillow that will slightly lift your upper body. \u201cA five- to 15-degree incline can put gravity into place and allow a person to not have as much heartburn at night,\u201d Dr. your right side might help. \u201cThough there&#8217;s no real science to it, when you sleep on your right side, gravity helps you move things down the GI tract more,\u201d he says, \u201cwhereas if you sleep on your left side, gravity is putting things more into your stomach as opposed to your intestines.\u201d One small study showed that sleeping on the right side is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3554820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">better for stomach emptying<\/a>, but more research is needed on the subject. Dr. Sonpol also notes that everyone is different, so it&#8217;s worth experimenting to see what works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sleeping-on-your-left-side\">Sleeping on Your Left Side<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>For those who suffer from heartburn, another sleeping position to try is on your left side (with your head and shoulders elevated). Studies have found that sleeping on the left side with your upper body elevated can <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26053170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decrease acid reflux episodes and heartburn<\/a>. Dr. Sonpol walks us through two sleeping positions that can make the process of digestion uncomfortable for some.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sleeping-flat-on-your-back\">Sleeping Flat on Your Back<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re somebody who has heartburn, sleeping flat on your back can actually increase your symptoms,\u201d Dr. Sonpol says. When you lay flat in bed, your throat and stomach are at the same level, making it easy for stomach acids to flow up your esophagus. That\u2019s why sleeping with your upper body at a slight incline can help alleviate symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sleeping-on-your-stomach\">Sleeping on Your Stomach<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While there isn\u2019t much science around this, Dr. Sonpol says that, anecdotally, people can feel uncomfortable while stomach sleeping. \u201cDepending on a person&#8217;s size and weight, sleeping on your stomach can make you feel uncomfortable,\u201d he says. \u201cI&#8217;ve had patients who say that when they sleep on their stomach after eating they feel like they&#8217;re going to vomit.\u201d This is likely because sleeping face down puts pressure on your stomach, which can cause discomfort, especially if you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-snacking-at-night\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">eat late in the night<\/a> or very close to bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"8b7771\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8b7771;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Sleep-and-digestion-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Woman pouring water into glass to support digestion while she sleeps\" class=\"wp-image-34469 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-support-digestion-before-bed\">How to Support Digestion Before Bed<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve established that your sleeping position can support a more comfortable digestive process, but many other things can, too. Dr. Sonpol shares the best things to do before bed to support optimal digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eat-one-to-two-hours-before-bed\">Eat One to Two Hours Before Bed<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing is to never go to bed immediately after eating,\u201d Dr. Sonpol says. Your last meal should be at least one to two hours before you go to bed. And while that can be difficult for some people, it makes a huge difference. \u201cIt doesn&#8217;t necessarily affect or slow your body&#8217;s ability to digest, but it makes it less likely that you&#8217;re going to have normal digestion,\u201d he continues. \u201cYou&#8217;re probably going to experience side effects like heartburn or feeling bloated or gassy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drink-enough-water\">Drink Enough Water<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve heard it a million times, but it\u2019s true: Drinking enough water is key to supporting digestion. Water moves everything through your GI tract and helps your body eliminate waste. Aim to drink eight to 12 cups of water every day, and ensure you\u2019re drinking enough water at dinner. One caveat: Try not to drink too much water before bed, as you\u2019ll likely have to wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eat-enough-fiber\">Eat Enough Fiber<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Most Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/nutrition.org\/most-americans-are-not-getting-enough-fiber-in-our-diets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aren\u2019t eating enough fiber<\/a>, according to the American Society for Nutrition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">Fiber<\/a> works to build up our stool and help our bodies with elimination.
