As of early March 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/75hard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#75Hard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/75hardchallenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#75HardChallenge<\/a> collectively had over 2.4 billion views on TikTok alone.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But if you break one rule on this \u201cmental toughness challenge,\u201d you have to start back at square one. A lot of us pursue certain things in life specifically because they allow us to hit the \u201ceasy button\u201d in one way or another&#8230; so why are millions of people signing up to spend months going hard?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/we-tried-keto-diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">keto<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/eat-day-whole30\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Whole30<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/juicing-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">juice cleanses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a> and diet trends are nothing new. But according to health experts we spoke to, 75 Hard is among the strictest of them all and requires some serious sacrifices.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ahead, discover the rules of the 75 Hard Challenge and what a dietitian and a trainer really think of the viral trend. Plus: their proposals for a healthier, safer, and more sustainable version of 75 Hard.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-75-hard-challenge\">What Is the 75 Hard Challenge?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>According to Andy Frisella\u2014a YouTuber, podcaster, and entrepreneur\u2014the 75 Hard program he launched in March 2019 is actually <em>not<\/em> a fitness program. Instead, he <a href=\"https:\/\/andyfrisella.com\/pages\/75hard-info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bills it<\/a> as a \u201cTRANSFORMATIVE MENTAL TOUGHNESS PROGRAM.\u201d Frisella promises that this \u201cIronman for your brain\u201d will \u201c100x\u201d traits like confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, fortitude, and grit.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As for Frisella himself, he\u2019s not a registered dietitian, certified personal trainer, or licensed mental health practitioner, but claims that he\u2019s qualified to lead others through this program after his \u201c20 years of intensive study and real-life experience.\u201d He doesn\u2019t cite any research to back up his motivation behind the 75 Hard rules. Instead, he touts reviews from those who have posted glowing reviews about the program.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-75-hard-challenge-rules\">75 Hard Challenge Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Deemed by Frisella as \u201ccritical\u201d daily tasks, the rules of the 75 Hard Challenge include the following, which must be performed daily for all 75 days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow any nutrition plan and stick to it; no cheat meals and no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do two 45-minute workouts; at least one needs to be performed outside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink a gallon of water (128 ounces).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read 10 pages of a self-improvement non-fiction book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a progress picture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>If challengers miss checking any of these boxes on any given day, they must start over at day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"918282\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #918282;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/What-is-the-75-hard-challenge-Rules-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Man taking progress pic on the 75 Hard Challenge\" class=\"wp-image-34392 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-experts-want-you-to-know-before-trying-75-hard\">WHat Experts Want You to Know Before Trying 75 Hard<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Some of the basic concepts behind the 75 Hard Challenge are driven by some healthy practices in theory, says Katie Kollath, CPT, personal trainer and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barpathfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barpath Fitness<\/a> in Golden, Colorado. But there are several potential red flags worth pointing out.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-its-very-strict\">It&#8217;s Very Strict<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>To start, Kollath champions the basic tenets of moving more, increasing water intake, and abstaining from alcohol. \u201cThese are generally great strategies for everyone to implement as a habitual part of your day to day routine to improve your health,&#8221; she says, &#8220;but the strictness of these goals is not sustainable or realistic for the average person.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The routine aspect can be beneficial for those seeking to make behavior changes, adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosaicnutrition.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Molly Bremer, RD<\/a>, a registered dietitian and the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosaicnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mosaic Nutrition<\/a> in Burlington, Vermont.\u00a0\u201cI think that having a routine with eating enough meals and snacks, engaging in movement, and reading for fun can be helpful,\u201d Bremer says. However, she\u2019s not so fond of how unrelenting the rules are: \u201cGeneral structure and routine with flexibility is helpful, but I would advise against having such strict two-and-a-half month challenge, or prompting them to track their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-are-the-best-vitamins-for-energy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">energy levels<\/a> or even health biometrics (like blood pressure or cholesterol), 75 Hard focuses on external measures of success. \u201cThe emphasis on progress photos and strict adherence to the rules can shift the focus away from internal measures of success and create a preoccupation with appearance and external validation,\u201d Kollath believes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Our bodies are biologically supposed to fluctuate day to day, Bremer adds\u2014and this is a normal part of being human. (And that\u2019s one of the rosier views in the weight-loss research landscape. Some studies have reported that stat to be as low as 5 percent.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plus, dieting can be dangerous. A study involving 14- and 15-year-olds published in the journal <em>Pediatrics<\/em> found that those who had dieted were <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/138\/3\/e20161649\/52684\/Preventing-Obesity-and-Eating-Disorders-in?autologincheck=redirected\">five times more likely<\/a> to develop an eating disorder later in life, and if that diet was extremely restrictive, that rate skyrocketed to 18 times more likely than their peers who didn\u2019t diet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-its-not-a-long-term-solution\">It&#8217;s Not a Long-Term Solution<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Overall, \u201c75 Hard is yet another diet trend that has been repackaged and branded as a \u2018lifestyle change,\u2019&#8221; Bremer says. \u201cI simply have no faith that these rules work as a way to make sustainable changes like being in the \u2018best physical shape of your life,\u2019 making \u2018huge strides in your career,\u2019 and developing \u2018amazing relationships\u2019 like the website suggests.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Even if you accomplish any or all of those things, she says, what happens on day 76? 107? 365? There\u2019s no guidance about where to take things from there, Bremer warns.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"9d8b80\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #9d8b80;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Is-75-Hard-safe-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Man cooking a fresh meal with whole foods for a healthy diet plan\" class=\"wp-image-34395 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-could-there-be-a-healthier-75-hard-challenge\">Could There Be a \u201cHealthier\u201d 75 Hard Challenge?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While you should always do what feels best for your body and what aligns with your values, time, budget, and overall goals, you <em>could<\/em> use Frisella\u2019s critical daily tasks as a jumping off point for a DIY wellness reboot.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>With that said, we asked Bremer and Kollath to help us rewrite the rules that could make for a healthier, more sustainable version of the 75 Hard Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rule-1\">Rule 1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Before: <\/strong>Follow any nutrition plan and stick to it; no cheat meals and no alcohol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After: <\/strong>Eat whole foods intuitively most of the time, and enjoy alcohol in moderation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\u201cFood is more than fuel! Food is culture, joy, connection, expression\u2014so many things! Focusing on our relationship to food is more important than what we are eating,\u201d Bremer says. A severely restrictive routine can not only be isolating, but it might also put you at risk for developing disordered eating patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we develop a more positive, flexible, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/intuitive-eating\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">intuitive relationship with food<\/a> with gentle nutrition principles, that will be the most impactful long-term solution.
