A GI doctor shares the inside scoop on all things morning poop and why bowel movements, daily, are so vital to our health.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sure, you can poop at any time of the day\u2014but dropping a number two in the morning is something that many people strive for, says gastroenterologist <a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/doctors\/1063617165\/david-m-poppers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David M. Poppers, MD, PhD<\/a>, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my practice, when I talk to patients about their bowel habits, it\u2019s quite common for them to tell you that they\u2019re regular in the morning like clockwork,\u201d says Dr. Poppers. \u201cAnd they enjoy it as part of their morning, too. They feel better, lighter, and ready to start their day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But have you ever wondered why it&#8217;s so common to have a morning poop or if it&#8217;s essential to do so every day? Keep reading for answers and tips to get into your morning poop groove.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-you-poop-every-morning\">Should You Poop Every Morning?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>As satisfying as a morning poop can be, pooping in the morning isn&#8217;t necessary health-wise. However, it makes sense if a morning poop is a regular part of your routine. Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your colon is getting going again.<\/strong> Last night, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dinner-smallest-meal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ate your last meal<\/a> or snack, went to bed, and spent the overnight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> in a rest-and-digest phase. Now, it\u2019s the next morning and your body is ready to clear itself out. \u201cThere\u2019s evidence that there\u2019s more colonic contraction in the first hour of wakefulness. It\u2019s fairly common for the waking-up cycle to be associated with gastrointestinal motility,\u201d says Dr. Poppers. (\u2018Motility\u2019 means that things are moving, which may send you straight to the bathroom.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morning habits are compatible with bowel movements. <\/strong>Whether you wake up and have some water, tea, or coffee, liquid itself encourages a BM. Plus, there\u2019s caffeine in caffeinated teas and coffee, which stimulate colonic contractions, according to Dr. Poppers. Likewise, eating a meal (in this case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/low-fodmap-breakfast-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breakfast<\/a>) does the same. Food and bevs tend to move things along, giving you that gotta-go feeling.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You\u2019re moving around. <\/strong>Your colon is a <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.umich.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/downloads\/bowel-function.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">muscular tube<\/a>, and moving your muscles with morning activity\u2014walking around, hopping on the stationary bike, going for a run\u2014will also get the GI tract going.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-getting-into-a-routine-is-helpful-for-morning-poops\">Why Getting into a Routine is Helpful for Morning Poops<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Then, there\u2019s the fact that once you get into a routine, your body will expect things to happen at certain times of the day. That itself will reinforce the habit, says <a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/doctors\/1063617165\/david-m-poppers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David M. Poppers, MD, PhD<\/a>. Still, prioritize hydrating with H2O. Water is the best liquid to drink, says Dr. Poppers, and he recommends aiming for two liters (about 68 ounces) of water per day.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> It&#8217;s important drink more water as you add more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> into your diet. Doing so will help to move things along while minimizing digestive discomfort, and can result in that longed-for morning poop.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-tips-to-facilitate-morning-poops\">4 Tips to Facilitate Morning Poops<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Again, while it&#8217;s normal to poop every morning, there&#8217;s no need to worry if you pass BMs later in the day, so long as your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a> stays regular. But if pooping in the morning is a goal of yours\u2014out of convenience or because it works best for your schedule\u2014there are several things you can do to both stay regular and shift into a good routine.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-eat-enough-fiber\">1. Eat Enough Fiber<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>There are two kinds of fiber\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">insoluble and soluble<\/a>\u2014and both play a role in properly formed stools that are easy-peasy to pass. Soluble fiber pulls in water and gels up during digestion (for comfortable poops), while insoluble speeds up the movement of food through the GI tract and bulks up your stool, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/imagepages\/19531.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Fiber-rich foods include oats, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Dr. Poppers advises his patients to eat 20 to 30 grams of fiber daily. Stay Active<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t have to tell you that enduring a long commute and sitting at a desk all day is severely cutting into active time&#8230; and that\u2019s not great for your health for a number of reasons. Physical activity stimulates the urge to go, so make sure you\u2019re getting up and on your feet throughout the day. Take a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hot-girl-walk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">10-minute walk<\/a> after lunch or dinner, stand up throughout the day, do a 7-minute app workout in the afternoon, or make that post-work yoga class non-negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-create-the-routine\">3. Create the Routine<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can train your body and brain in both good and not-so-good ways,\u201d says David M. Poppers, MD, PhD. If you want to have morning poops, fit some toilet time into your normal morning routine, whenever it makes the most sense for you. \u201cFor a lot of people, it becomes routine and through biofeedback, your body learns that it\u2019s morning and it\u2019s time to eliminate,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you have to go, go\u2014but if you don\u2019t, get off the toilet. \u201cSpending 30 or 40 minutes sitting there is not productive,\u201d Dr. Poppers says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-get-situated-for-success\">4. Get Situated for Success<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>One of the best tools you can use is a toilet stool.
