Seriously, if I get my hands on a piece of Tillamook cheddar, it&#8217;s all over (#GoodbyeCleanEats). And, potentially, goodbye blemish-free skin. Dairy and acne, and if they&#8217;re related, have been hotly debated.\n\nChances are you know someone who experienced an improvement in their acne after cutting out dairy\u2014or, at least, have read a firsthand account on the internet. And if you\u2019re struggling with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/23-surprising-habits-linked-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>, you\u2019re probably willing to try anything\u2014even cutting out your beloved non-fat lattes\u2014to rid yourself of blemishes. So could dairy really be at the root of your skin woes?\n\nTo get to the bottom of it, I consulted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drwhitneybowe\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whitney Bowe, MD<\/a>, Assistant Medical Director of Laser and Cosmetic Services at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advanceddermatologypc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Dermatology, P.C.<\/a> and Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She literally wrote the study on how diet affects your skin (it was published in the Journal of the Academy of Dermatology). Here, she breaks down the link between dairy and acne.\n<h2>So, Does Dairy Cause Acne?<\/h2>\n\u201cI have found milk-based products to cause acne when ingested orally,\u201d says Dr. Bowe. \u201cWhile the intensities of the effects vary from person to person, there&#8217;s a link between ingesting dairy products and breakouts. I\u2019ve actually published on this extensively. Not only do I see a link with my patients, but I also see one in the literature in published peer-reviewed epidemiological studies.\u201d The worst two offenders? Dairy milk and ice cream. (Luckily\u2014or not\u2014for me, cheese and yogurt don&#8217;t seem to have the same effect.)\n<h2>Why?<\/h2>\n\u201cPrevious studies suggested it may be the hormones in dairy that are the culprit, but the latest research shows that milk proteins, whey and casein, are also to blame,\u201d says Dr. Bowe. \u201cThe exact process is still unknown, but the thought is that when they bind to receptors in the digestive tract they signal certain molecules that trigger breakouts.\u201d Avoid skim milk in particular, because when companies remove the fat they add more of these proteins so that the milk doesn\u2019t look and taste watery.\n<h2>How Can you Tell if Dairy is the Culprit Behind Your Breakouts?<\/h2>\nCut dairy from your diet for at least a month, and see if your skin improves. \u201cSometimes it takes that long, if not longer, to see an impact on the skin.\u201d\n\nAlso, if you do decide to go cold turkey on dairy, make sure you&#8217;re still getting enough calcium and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-deficiency-what-you-should-know\/\">vitamin D<\/a>. (We recommend HUM&#8217;s vegan-friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-and-supplements-should-i-take\/\">supplements<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/13\/got-calcium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Got Calcium <\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/8\/here-comes-the-sun\">Here Comes the Sun<\/a>.)\n<h2>How to Fight Dairy-Related Acne<\/h2>\n\u201cTreating dairy-based acne can be as simple as removing these products from your diet and seeing an improvement,\u201d she says. \u201cHowever, it\u2019s so important to keep in mind that dietary modifications are only meant to be used in conjunction with other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/facial-mapping-best-vitamins-for-acne-breakouts\/\">tried and true acne therapies<\/a>.\u201d See your derm to get a comprehensive approach to battling your acne.\n<h2>The Best Milk Alternatives<\/h2>\nSwitch to almond milk, coconut milk, or rice milk, advises Bowe. \u201cAlmond milk is a great alternative, as it&#8217;s dairy-free and low-glycemic index, both of which can help improve the quality of your skin,\u201d she adds. \u201cAlmond milk is also rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a>, which is great for keeping skin, hair and nails healthy.\u201d\n\nIf you can\u2019t bear to part with dairy completely, Bowe recommends low-sugar yogurt. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/probiotic-foods-balance-digestion-diy-yogurt-recipe\/\">probiotics in yogurt<\/a> are beneficial to the skin and play a role in helping to control breakouts.\u201d\n<h2>When Milk Can Actually Help Your Skin<\/h2>\n\u201cUsing milk-based products topically provides intense hydration and soothing effects,\u201d Dr. Bowe says.
