Fazio explains that those with high metabolism have higher baseline energy requirements, \u201cincreasing the amount of intake required to meet energy needs.\u201d As such, someone with high metabolism may need to eat more on a daily basis to keep their body energized and at peak function. Still, they\u2019ll burn calories at a relatively rapid pace and are more likely to maintain (rather than gain) weight compared to someone with slower metabolism, so long as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2897177\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy intake matches energy expenditure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, the perks of having fast metabolism aren\u2019t limited to considerations around weight. High metabolism can also lead to having more energy throughout the day, as well as enjoying better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> at night.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-factors-that-affect-your-metabolism\">Key factors that affect your metabolism<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>According to Fazio, the primary factors that affect how fast or slow your metabolism is include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Genetics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age (but only to an extent, as metabolism remains stable from age 20 to 60 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/08\/210812145028.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declines by 0.7 percent annually<\/a> thereafter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279077\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NEAT<\/a> (the portion of daily energy expenditure from non-fitness related physical activity), which \u201cis responsible for 6 to 10 percent of TEE in individuals with a mainly sedentary lifestyle and for 50 percent or more in highly active individuals\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lean body mass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>As we can see, some aspects of metabolism are beyond a person\u2019s control. But lifestyle factors can also sway it, for better (as we\u2019ll see below) or for worse. The operative word for this tip is <em>slight<\/em>. \u201cAn individual&#8217;s calorie needs vary widely. For someone aiming to lose weight, there is a threshold in which they should create a deficit and prevent going below their basal metabolic rate,\u201d Fazio explains. The ideal amount of calories to cut will vary from person to person\u2014and it may take some trial and error to figure out your sweet spot\u2014so it may be worth enlisting the help of a registered dietitian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Try out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\">intermittent fasting<\/a> (IF).<\/strong> Intermittent fasting holds promise to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35310455\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve longevity and healthspan<\/a>, promote weight loss, and ramp up metabolism (among other benefits).
