The desert has an annual average of 25 percent humidity, and most planes are at 10 percent humidity. Which means by the time you de-plane, you basically have the dermal equivalent of astronaut ice cream: dry and dehydrated. Add in the recycled air and multitude of germs, and your skin is in in trouble.\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n\r\nLuckily, there are steps you can take to help you step off the plane looking as glowy as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. We tracked down the experts who possess such skin-saving knowledge. Here, the airplane routine you need so you don\u2019t look dead on arrival.\r\n<h2><strong>HERE\u2019S WHY YOU GET DEHYDRATED SKIN WHILE FLYING<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\u201cWhen you travel by plane, pay special attention to your skin,\u201d says celebrity esthetician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reneerouleau.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ren\u00e9e Rouleau<\/a>. \u201cSkin cells are like fish: They need water to live. Without it, you&#8217;re compromising not only the appearance of the skin (lines and wrinkles are more pronounced when the skin lacks moisture), but the overall health of it too.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe air inside the cabin essentially sucks the life out of your skin. \u201cThe dry air looks for moisture where it can, robbing it directly from your skin, Rouleau explains. \u201cWhen the skin has no water, it attempts to compensate for the dehydration by producing more oil. For dry skin types that have little oil production, the skin will be depleted of moisture.\u201d That\u2019s bad news for your skin.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe recycled air on planes is notoriously dehydrating. Also, there are loads of bacteria floating around,\u201d adds Kerry Benjamin, celebrity esthetician and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/stackedskincare.com\">Stacked Skincare<\/a>. Since your skin produces excess sebum to make up for the moisture loss, it creates the perfect environment for that bacteria to thrive. In turn, you could be in for some pesky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/23-surprising-habits-linked-to-acne\/\">pimples<\/a> upon landing.\r\n<h2><strong>PRE-FLIGHT TIPS TO PREVENT<strong>\u00a0DEHYDRATED SKIN<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u201cYou must load your skin up with as much hydration and protection as possible,\u201d says Rouleau. A skin serum with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hyaluronic-acid\/\">hyaluronic acid<\/a> or lipid rich oils will moisturize deep within the layers of your skin.\r\n<h3><strong>Apply SPF<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nDon\u2019t forget to apply a sunscreen of at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-layering-spf-work\/\">SPF<\/a> 30. Rouleau says that airplane windows don\u2019t filter out skin-damaging UV rays. Plus, you\u2019re closer to the sun than if you were on the ground. For extra UV protection, try taking a supplement like HUM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/16\/turn-back-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turn Back Time<\/a>, which contains PLE (a fern extract) and free radical-fighting antioxidants.\r\n<h3><strong>Avoid eating these veggies<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nWhat you eat before you get on the plane can seriously improve your quality of airplane travel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vandanasheth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Vandana Sheth<\/a>, RDN, CDE, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recommends noshing on a carb and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> balanced meal before flying. Whatever you do, don\u2019t eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. These veggies can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\">gas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bloating\/\">bloating<\/a> (not pleasant for you or your seat mate).\r\n<h2><strong>IN-FLIGHT TIPS TO PREVENT<strong>\u00a0DEHYDRATED SKIN<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Take care of your eyes<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nAsk for an ice cube to de-puff your eyes upon takeoff and landing, says Benjamin. Then tie your hair out of your face and dab on a small amount of eye cream. \u201cBecause of the lack of circulation in the body while flying and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> deprivation that comes with travel, our eyes can suffer,\u201d she explains.\r\n<h3><strong>Keep moisturizing<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u201cApplying a few drops of a well-formulated skin oil (like the Ren\u00e9e Rouleau Pro Remedy Oil, $72.50) to the face every hour of a flight will help keep moisture in the skin where it belongs,\u201d advises Rouleau.\r\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t underestimate the power of lip balm<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nDry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-chapped-lips\/\">chapped lips<\/a> are never fun, but are infinitely more awful when you\u2019re cruising at 30,000 feet and can\u2019t escape the small talk the stranger next to you keeps trying to initiate. All that extra salt also makes you\u2014and your skin\u2014extra dehydrated. Plus, sugar, carbs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dairy-and-acne\/\">dairy<\/a> can all cause breakouts and exacerbate inflammatory conditions like eczema and rosacea.\r\n<h3><strong>Pack a healthy snack<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nSheth packs a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread, homemade trail mix, whole cucumbers or celery sticks, dry oatmeal, herbal teabags, and a water bottle, depending on the length of the flight.\r\n<h3><strong>Drink tons of water<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nAnother tip: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bkr\/\">Stay hydrated<\/a>. Sheth recommends drinking around eight ounces of water per hour of flight time (peppermint, chamomile, and ginger tea are also good options). Fresh fruits and veggies also help you stay hydrated.\r\n<h2><strong>POST-FLIGHT TIPS TO PREVENT DEHYDRATED SKIN<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>An insta-fix<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u201cThe skin can look sluggish after a long day of traveling, so bring some fresh blood to the face by hanging your head upside down for three minutes,\u201d Rouleau recommends. \u201cYou\u2019ll go from tired to radiant immediately.\u201d\r\n<h3><strong>Exfoliate for best results<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u201cWhen you reach your hotel, cleanse your face thoroughly and apply a peel like my TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel, $150, to gently exfoliate and kill any acne-causing bacteria lurking on your skin,\u201d says Benjamin. \u201cYou\u2019ll wake up to refreshed, glowing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-hydrate-skin\/\">hydrated skin<\/a>, and you&#8217;ll be ready to take on your day!\u201d\r\n<h3><strong>Keep moisturizing<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nLastly, it\u2019s important to keep on hydrating to prevent your skin from drying out and to restore its radiance.
