After all, juice seems to be everywhere in the wellness space (again). Influencers tout celery juice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-lemon-water-help-you-lose-weight\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">lemon juice<\/a>, beet juice, and more for their nutrient contents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/detox-drinks\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">hydrating properties<\/a>. And while it\u2019s true that the juice of fruits and vegetables offers vitamins and minerals, juicing for weight loss isn\u2019t so simple.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>We asked Rhyan Geiger, RDN, Owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/phxvegandietitian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phoenix Vegan Dietitian<\/a> for her honest opinion on juicing for weight loss. Here\u2019s what she had to say.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-juicing\">What Is Juicing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"9e8064\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #9e8064;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/juice-for-weight-loss-jpg.webp\" alt=\"juice for weight loss\" class=\"wp-image-33144 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Juicing involves consuming just the juice of fruit and vegetables for a certain amount of time. It can range anywhere from 48 hours to seven days (or beyond). The diet typically involves a range of juices from different fruits, vegetables, and even herbs.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The juice is made by pressing the liquid out of a fruit or vegetable and discarding the remaining peel and skin. You can do this manually or with a machine. Juicing collects the freshest juice from fruits and vegetables, but it leaves out the fiber\u2014which can have some negative effects in the long run. (Psst: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-resistant-starch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Fiber is your friend<\/a>!)<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-juicing-for-weight-loss-work\">Does Juicing For Weight Loss Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Juicing for weight loss does work initially due to the intense caloric deficit it causes. But it\u2019s not a sustainable form of weight loss. \u201cOn average, a juice cleanse provides 600 to 700 calories per day, which is much lower than what an adult&#8217;s nutrition needs are,\u201d Geiger says. For reference, women are likely to need between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day, and men from 2,000 to 3,000, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015\/guidelines\/appendix-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>. And while a juice cleanse will lead to weight loss, Geiger says a drastic decrease in calories can be dangerous. Despite the minimal calories it offers, it also takes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> away from the produce. \u201cWithout the fiber, you are missing out on some digestive benefits and it can leave you feeling hungry more quickly,\u201d Geiger explains. \u201cRemoval of fiber from fruits can cause your blood sugar to increase more rapidly than having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/post-workout-smoothie-recipes\/\">smoothie<\/a> or whole fruit that contains fiber.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Because juicing is an unsustainable eating pattern, Geiger says it isn\u2019t ideal for weight loss. \u201cWhen choosing a diet that is a short duration (like a one-, three-, or six-day juice cleanse), you may see results in the interim but will likely gain the weight back that you have lost,\u201d she says. This can also make you feel defeated and lead to yo-yo dieting over time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-lose-weight-in-a-healthy-sustainable-way\" data-short-title=\"How to Lose Weight in a Healthy Way\">How to Lose Weight in a Healthy, Sustainable Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a2ac95\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a2ac95;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/green-juice-for-weight-loss-jpg.webp\" alt=\"green juice for weight loss\" class=\"wp-image-33145 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>So, what exactly is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-lose-weight-fast\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">best way to lose weight<\/a>? \u201cThe best way to lose weight\u2014if that is a goal of yours\u2014is to work with a registered dietitian who can personalize a plan to help you better reach your goals,\u201d Geiger says. \u201cA dietitian can also guide you into setting realistic goals that are attainable and teach you life-long skills you can apply to your daily life outside of nutrition too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>And remember: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Drastic weight loss<\/a> isn\u2019t sustainable or healthy. \u201cIf you feel concerned or like you need a drastic way to lose weight, finding a mental health professional who you can talk with about your concerns can be a great tool in improving your relationship with yourself and your body,\u201d Geiger says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you want to reap the benefits of juicing (like getting an extra dose of vitamins and minerals or getting extra hydration), try incorporating juice from fruits and vegetables into a whole-food diet. Look for juices without any added sugars or preservatives if possible. Or, make it yourself at home with a juicer.
