With inflation at an all-time high and discussions of a recession looming, it can be especially stressful to food shop when trying to eat healthily. Your go-to food choices may no longer be in your budget and low-cost but highly-processed foods may seem like your only option.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Fear not! You can still prioritize eating healthy on a budget. The key is to be a strategic shopper. While grocery shopping on a budget may take more time and effort (we see you clipping coupons!), the payoff will be worth it for your energy levels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a>, and long-term health.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s also remember that your health is more than just your physical health, but your mental and emotional health too. If you\u2019re constantly stressed about an over-budget grocery bill, your overall health will suffer. To help, I put together my favorite tips for saving money on groceries, below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-eat-healthy-on-a-budget\">How to Eat Healthy on a Budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"867252\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #867252;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/eating-healthy-on-a-budget.jpg\" alt=\"eating healthy on a budget\" class=\"wp-image-32299 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-plan-for-1-2-vegan-meals-per-week\">1. Plan for 1-2 Vegan Meals Per Week<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Did you know that adding just a couple of plant-based meals per week can be one of the best tips for saving money on groceries?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Reports suggest that meat, fish, and poultry prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t01.htm?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased by nine percent<\/a> over the last year. However, you can purchase dry beans for just $0.13 per serving. Plant-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> options tend to be less costly than their meat alternatives, making them a great choice when you\u2019re trying to save money and eat healthy on a budget.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plant-based proteins, such as beans and lentils, also pack tons of nutrients into your diet. Not only are they a good source of protein, but they\u2019re rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6124841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fiber<\/a>, iron, and potassium.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Need some ideas? Stretch Meat-Centric Meals by Adding More Plants<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re used to \u201cmeat and potatoes\u201d style meals, adding more vegan meals to your diet may be out of your comfort zone right now. But you can still stretch your meat-heavy meals by filling out your plate with more (affordable) veggies. Check out the examples for some staple dinners below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Chicken Stir Fry:<\/strong> Add frozen shelled edamame (about $0.75 per serving) in addition to chicken and vegetables for more plant-based protein and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Chili:<\/strong> Don\u2019t just use ground beef, but also add canned beans ($0.48 per serving).<\/li><li><strong>Pasta and Meatballs:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mix in chopped mushrooms ($0.27 per serving) in addition to ground meat.<\/li><li><strong>Chicken Noodle Soup:<\/strong> Add chickpeas ($0.48 per serving), like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/chickpea-noodle-soup-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this recipe<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>These methods will help you get more servings out of your usual recipes while adding in additional nutrients. Plus, they all make excellent leftovers!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-join-a-csa\">3. Join a CSA<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Community-Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a farming model designed to support farmers and consumers alike. Consumers purchase a share of a farm\u2019s harvest without knowing exactly what they will receive each week. Most CSAs have a weekly or bi-monthly pickup where consumers will receive a pre-determined amount of vegetables and\/or fruit for a set membership fee. Joining a CSA is an affordable way to buy vegetables and fruit while supporting your local farmers (who are also feeling the pressure of inflation).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you love to be creative in the kitchen, a CSA is also a great way to expand your cooking muscles, because you\u2019ll receive vegetables that you may not have bought yourself at the supermarket. Luckily, the crops you get are in season and at their peak ripeness, so you know you\u2019re getting the best of your local produce. Bonus: Produce also contains the highest amount of nutrients right after its picked.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>You can find a local CSA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localharvest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-shop-bulk-bins\">4. Shop Bulk Bins<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>One of the most affordable places to shop in any supermarket is often overlooked. The bulk bins often give you the best price for grains, dried beans, lentils, dried fruit, coffee, spices, and even chocolate because supermarkets are able to purchase these items in large quantities, passing on a discount to you. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2012\/04\/03\/149932940\/oh-nuts-buying-bulk-can-cost-more-but-saves-packaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one study<\/a> found that bulk bins can save you a whopping 56 percent compared to buying the same food in a package. Even more, you help the environment by cutting down on packaging. (Psst: You can even bring your own jars!)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s always important to be a comparison shopper. This same study found that nuts, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2012\/04\/03\/149932940\/oh-nuts-buying-bulk-can-cost-more-but-saves-packaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almonds<\/a>, can be more expensive in bulk bins compared to individual packages. Check your local supermarket, as prices can vary based on where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-rely-on-frozen-produce\">5. Rely on Frozen Produce<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Fresh vegetables and fruit can be costly\u2014especially in the winter when they\u2019re out of season. If you\u2019re trying to eat healthy on a budget, frozen is the way to go.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a common misconception that frozen food is not as healthy as fresh. But the truth is most fresh produce travels thousands of miles to hit your supermarket shelves. This transportation time leads to a loss of nutrients. As a result, frozen fruits and vegetables can actually retain <em>more<\/em> nutrients than their fresh counterparts. Thanks to current freezing methods, frozen produce is picked and frozen at its peak ripeness, locking in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/are-frozen-vegetables-healthy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">more nutrients<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As an added bonus, frozen produce often cuts down on preparation time. Instead of chopping and dicing, you can cook directly from (or even in) the bag.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-dont-skip-the-center-aisles-of-your-supermarket\">6. Don\u2019t Skip the Center Aisles of Your Supermarket<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"babdaf\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #babdaf;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-save-money-on-groceries.jpg\" alt=\"how to save money on groceries\" class=\"wp-image-32301 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Outdated healthy eating advice states: \u201cShop the perimeter of your supermarket.\u201d However, we now know that this couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. While it\u2019s true that the center aisles contain more packaged food items, there are still plenty of healthy items to be found.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For instance, did you know that canned tomatoes contain more antioxidants than fresh tomatoes? Especially in the fall and winter, you\u2019ll save a pretty penny by relying on canned tomatoes for your pasta sauces, chili, soups, stews, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Canned beans are also an affordable option. Most canneries did away with BPA and other chemical liners years ago, so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> assured that the canning process is a healthy one. If you\u2019re still concerned about added sodium, rinse the canned beans to remove up to <a href=\"https:\/\/beaninstitute.com\/rinse-beans-the-right-way-to-reduce-sodium\/#:~:text=Draining%20and%20rinsing%20canned%20beans,running%20water%20for%2010%20seconds.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40 percent of the sodium content<\/a>. Or, look for \u201cno salt added\u201d varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-hit-the-bakery-at-the-end-of-the-day\">7. Hit the Bakery at the End of the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to save money on baked goods, shop at the bakery at the end of the day. Bakeries often discard (or donate) their leftover goods at the end of the day, which is why you can often score a deal then.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When buying bread, look for 100 percent whole wheat bread for more fiber and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-dont-shop-on-a-whim\">8. Don\u2019t Shop on a Whim<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>One of the worst things you can do when food shopping on a budget is to walk into a store blindly. Without doing your research in advance, you\u2019re almost guaranteed to spend more money or purchase items that end up in the trash at the end of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Instead, be sure to do these three things before your next shopping trip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Look up the sales in advance<\/li><li>Make a meal plan for the week<\/li><li>Write a detailed shopping list<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<p>By looking up sales at multiple stores, you can find the best available price for your favorite foods and save money on big-ticket items, like proteins and produce. Find out when your local stores start sales (for most stores it\u2019s Wednesday). Shop on the day sales begin to ensure the items you want on sale are in stock. Then, craft your meal plan around the sales. Next, write a detailed shopping list and stick to it. While berries may look appealing to add to your yogurt in the morning, if they\u2019re not on your list, they may not fit your budget. (But maybe a bag of frozen ones will!)<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-stock-up-when-items-are-on-sale\">9. Stock Up When Items Are on Sale<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>When your favorite healthy foods go on sale, snatch up some extra to store in your freezer. This way you\u2019ll save money but still be able to enjoy your favorites. Keep a running list of the items in your freezer (and their expiration dates) to prevent waste.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>You may already be doing this for items like cereal, grains, or even chicken, but did you know that you can freeze items like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-freeze-fresh-produce\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">produce (including avocado)<\/a>, cheese, fish, butter, baked goods, eggs (out of their shells), milk, and more? It\u2019s one of the best tips for saving money on groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-skip-the-brand-names\">10. Skip the Brand Names<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Most people favor certain brands for specific reasons, but when you\u2019re trying to eat healthy on a budget, the store brand may be the most affordable option. But that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re automatically compromising the quality of the item. Oftentimes, store-brand items and branded counterparts are produced in the same facility (gasp!). The only difference is often the packaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Eating healthy on a budget is certainly doable but takes some additional time and planning.
