Read on to learn why these ingredients could pose health risks and should be avoided.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>You probably give a lot of thought to what\u2019s in your supplements\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/8\/here-comes-the-sun\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">vitamin D<\/a> to support your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-immune-system-works\/\">immune system<\/a> and mood, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/6\/gut-instinct\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">probiotic <\/a>for balanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\">gut health<\/a>, maybe an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/65\/calm-sweet-calm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">ashwagandha gummy<\/a> to help manage stress. But what\u2019s <em>not <\/em>in your supplement is just as important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Many vitamin and supplement manufacturers use fillers, artificial ingredients, and chemicals to reduce cost and to make products that appeal to the senses, whether that\u2019s the look, taste, or smell of the product. Supplements also contain other ingredients that help with the manufacturing, stability, and appearance of the finished product, explains HUM Nutrition\u2019s VP of Scientific Affairs and Education, Jennifer Martin-Biggers, PhD, MS, RD. \u201cThese other ingredients are often very necessary and serve key functions to make sure powders don\u2019t clump, pills don\u2019t crumble, capsules don\u2019t smell, just to name a few,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While not every extra ingredient found in your supplement is inherently bad, several pose health risks. \u201cSome ingredients that may be used for these functions don\u2019t have a great scientific track record,\u201d Dr. Martin-Biggers explains. We believe it is our responsibility to ensure that only good-for-you ingredients are in the supplements you consume.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For that reason, we never formulated with things like titanium dioxide, for example, which is currently banned by the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also committed to scientific research and standards to ensure the safety and efficacy of our products above and beyond what is considered basic requirements in our industry,\u201d says Dr. Martin-Biggers.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>(Psst: You won\u2019t find ingredients like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gluten-intolerance\/\">gluten<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dairy-and-acne\/\">dairy<\/a>, or other allergens on this list. We conduct separate testing for these through independent lab testing to ensure those are not found as contaminants in our products. You can always find this info listed on our website. All of our products are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/clean-label-project-hum-nutrition\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Clean Label Project-certified<\/a>, so they\u2019re rigorously tested for contaminants like lead, mercury, and glyphosate.)<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hum-nutritions-tricky-12\">HUM Nutrition\u2019s Tricky 12<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a specific list of ingredients to avoid in supplements, these are the ones we skip when making all of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/products\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">vitamins and supplements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-titanium-dioxide\">1. Titanium Dioxide<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Titanium dioxide is frequently used by supplement manufacturers to make pills or capsules appear whiter. However, in 2021, the EFSA published an opinion deeming titanium dioxide unsafe due to concerns of genotoxicity following a safety evaluation of titanium dioxide, especially as it may accumulate in the body. They noted that based on the evidence, there are many uncertainties and concerns about titanium dioxide to warrant its removal from safe use in foods. The ingredient has since been banned for use in the entire European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-artificial-colors\">2. Artificial Colors<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>All colors added to foods are specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-additives-petitions\/color-additives-questions-and-answers-consumers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> by the FDA, including synthetic and natural color sources. However, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-35309-y?utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=commission_junction&amp;utm_campaign=CONR_PF018_ECOM_GL_PHSS_ALWYS_DEEPLINK&amp;utm_content=textlink&amp;utm_term=PID100093539&amp;CJEVENT=b5e59a3281f511ed81448b340a82b82d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 peer-reviewed publication<\/a>, researchers found that Red 40, a dye popular in supplements and other foodstuffs, has the potential to directly disturb your gut microbiome and hormone production. Additionally, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23026007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2013 toxicology review<\/a> of nine artificial colors in that group showed health concerns varying from cancer-causing activity and hypersensitivity reactions to genotoxicity, or DNA or chromosomal damage, which includes birth defects. The review also identified an absence of independent testing and regulatory protocols to assess the safety of food dyes. We choose not to formulate with these, but if you\u2019re looking at labels for other products, steer clear of these names: FD&amp;C Blue No.1, FD&amp;C Blue No.2, FD&amp;C Green No. 3, Orange B, Citrus Red No. 2, FD&amp;C Red No. 3, FD&amp;C Red No. 40, FD&amp;C Yellow No.5, and FD&amp;C Yellow No. C.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-artificial-preservatives\">3. Artificial Preservatives<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Food preservatives are also specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-additives-petitions\/food-additive-status-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> by the FDA, but we skip them. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7117642\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific review<\/a> of popular artificial food additives, including preservatives, found that non-nutritive additives can have adverse health effects including weight gain and altered gut microbiota.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-artificial-sweeteners\">4. Artificial Sweeteners<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>When it comes to artificial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-and-worst-sweeteners\/\">sweeteners<\/a> like aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, acesulfame-K, and neotame, there is a lack of consensus in the scientific literature regarding the safety and benefits of using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/artificial-sweeteners-and-gut-health\/\">artificial sweeteners<\/a>. Previously studied benefits of artificial sweeteners have been invalidated or challenged by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4899993\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent research<\/a> that links artificial sweeteners to adverse health effects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/artificial-sweeteners-and-gut-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">impaired gut health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-artificial-flavors\">5. Artificial Flavors<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Similar to artificial preservatives, research has shown the potential for negative health effects of artificial flavors. Luckily, if you\u2019re reading the back of a label, artificial flavors are easily spotted: Any flavors that are not listed as \u201cnatural flavors\u201d or have the designation of \u201cnatural\u201d are artificial.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-high-fructose-corn-syrup\">6. High Fructose Corn Syrup<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>There is a lack of consensus in the literature regarding the safety of high fructose corn syrup, a sugar-based sweetener, but the research on sugar is clear: consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/effects-of-sugar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">too much added sugar<\/a> is linked with weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nutrition\/data-statistics\/be-sugar-smart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a> recommends consuming less than 10 percent of your total daily calories from added sugars on a given day.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-hydrogenated-oils\">7. Hydrogenated Oils<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>When you hear about \u201cbad fats,\u201d this is what should come to mind and why we avoid hydrogenated oils, which are frequently used by manufacturers to keep ingredients fresh. A <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/nutritionreviews\/article\/78\/6\/474\/5678770?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 meta-analysis<\/a> from the American Heart Association of nine observational studies and 10 randomized controlled trials confirms the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/trans-fat\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">trans fat<\/a> (the main source of fat in hydrogenated oils) and increased risk for heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-talc\">8. Talc<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Talc has long been used as an ingredient in the cosmetic and supplement industries. Some research has linked talc to an increased risk for certain cancers, however other studies have not found the same link. In 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7009349\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Food Safety Authority<\/a> (EFSA) re-evaluated its opinion on the risk for neurotoxicity from talc and magnesium silicate. They determined that the safety of talc and magnesium cannot be assessed due to a lack of reliable data. Because of the inclusive research, it&#8217;s best to avoid this ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-magnesium-silicate\">9. Magnesium Silicate<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, the EFSA has stated the data on the safety of magnesium silicate is not reliable. To play it safe, we don\u2019t use this ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-edta-and-derivatives\">10. EDTA and Derivatives<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK565883\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EDTA<\/a> is an acid that\u2019s often used as a medication to treat metal toxicity. Unless this is prescribed by a doctor for a specific health concern, it should be avoided in supplements. EDTA and its derivatives are able to bind to heavy metals, which can result in mineral deficiencies in important nutrients like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/zinc-benefits\/\">zinc<\/a> and have toxicological side effects, such as renal toxicity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-shellac\">11. Shellac<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Nope, we\u2019re not talking about the nail polish! In the supplement and pharmaceutical world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9156870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shellac coating<\/a> for soft gel pills is made from the secretions of the parasitic lac insect. Ew? Enough said! Most of our products are vegan, and we like to keep it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-pharmaceutical-glaze\">12. Pharmaceutical Glaze<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While the term \u201cpharmaceutical glaze\u201d might sound innocuous, it can contain up to 51 percent shellac. It can also contain titanium dioxide, which does not need to be disclosed on labels.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Be on the lookout for these ingredients the next time you\u2019re shopping for supplements and foods.
