We spoke to a board-certified dermatologist to find out <\/em><em>how to get rid of sunburn fast<\/em><em> so you can keep soaking up the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Well, it happened\u2014whether you had a beach day, went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-pool-snacks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">a pool party<\/a>, enjoyed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-hiking\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">a hike<\/a>, or simply just spent too much time outside with too little sun protection, you ended up with sunburn. And while we know it\u2019s important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-layering-spf-work\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">wear SPF<\/a>\u2014as it can prevent damaging sun exposure which can put us at risk for skin cancer\u2014it\u2019s easy to forget re-apply when you\u2019re enjoying yourself. If you notice your skin is pink or red after some time outside, you\u2019re dealing with sunburn. It\u2019s a pain (literally), but there are ways to heal it quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>We spoke to a dermatologist to find out how to get rid of sunburn fast (and included a list of the best things for sunburn) so you can get back outside and enjoy the warm weather.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-sunburn\">What Is Sunburn?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a4ab9c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a4ab9c;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-heal-sunburn.jpg\" alt=\"how to heal sunburn\" class=\"wp-image-31052 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>You know what sunburn feels like and looks like, but what is sunburn, exactly? Sunburn is an inflammatory response that happens when our skin is exposed to UV rays for a prolonged amount of time without any protection. \u201cThe skin cells become red, swollen, hot, and painful to touch,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/physicians.lahey.org\/details\/3444\/anar-mikailov-dermatology-burlington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Anar Mikailov<\/a>, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpaway.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KP Away<\/a>. \u201cIt can even blister, but do not pop the blisters, they are filled with fluids that help heal the skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-do-sunburns-last\">How Long Do Sunburns Last?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s not a concrete answer for how long it takes for sunburn to heal, unfortunately. It depends on the severity of the burn. Light or moderate sunburn can take anywhere from three to seven days to heal completely. However, blistering or peeling skin can take up to two weeks to fully recover. During this time, it\u2019s essential to keep your skin covered and out of the sun to prevent any further damage or blistering.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-rid-of-sunburn\">How to Get Rid of Sunburn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cdae9c\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cdae9c;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/how-to-get-rid-of-sunburn-fast.jpg\" alt=\"how to get rid of sunburn fast\" class=\"wp-image-31053 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Once again, it\u2019s important to note that the treatment for sunburn depends on the severity of the burn. \u201cIf you have blisters involving over 25 percent of your body, then you should see a doctor,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. \u201cIf you develop significant pain, that\u2019s another reason to see a doctor.\u201d But if you\u2019re wondering what helps sunburn, here are a few things Dr. Mikailov recommends.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-an-anti-inflammatory\">Take an Anti-Inflammatory<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Since sunburn is an inflammatory response your body has to sun exposure, one of the best things you can do is take an anti-inflammatory (like ibuprofen) to reduce said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a>. You can also incorporate other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">anti-inflammatory habits<\/a> into your routine while you recover, such as getting enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a>, moving your body daily, and eating whole foods such as vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, and plant-based proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bathe-in-cool-water\">Bathe in Cool Water<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Have you ever noticed that your sunburn still feels hot even long after you\u2019ve left the sun? Taking down the temperature on your shower offers instant sunburn relief and can accelerate healing. \u201cCool the skin with a cool bath or shower to reduce the heat in the skin,\u201d Dr. Mikailov suggests. Avoid hot showers, as they can cause more irritation in the moment and can dry out your skin even more (which can exacerbate post-sunburn peeling or blistering). A Derm Weighs In<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/a><\/article>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-try-slugging\">Try Slugging<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been on TikTok, you\u2019ve likely heard of slugging. It\u2019s a Korean beauty protective skincare practice that involves sealing in all of your skincare with a heavy occlusive (a moisturizing product that forms a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss). While slugging your face and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hair-slugging\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">hair slugging<\/a> have become more popular, you can also try the practice on your body. \u201cAfter the heat is drawn out of the skin [from your cool shower], in areas of significant burn \u2018slugging\u2019 with a thick layer of vaseline or coconut oil will help the skin heal,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. For itchy sunburn, he recommends slugging with aloe vera and similar cooling or menthol gels.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pro tip: This is especially effective if you\u2019re dealing with sunburned lips. Try adding a coat of vaseline onto your pout before you sleep for best results.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-thick-creams-or-emollients\">Use Thick Creams or Emollients<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all been there: Not only is your skin red, hot, and tender to the touch, it\u2019s also covered in white flakes. To get rid of peeling skin from sunburn, a thick cream can help. \u201cAs your skin peels, switch to thick emollients or creams with plant-based oils to restore your body\u2019s natural oil,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. \u201c[These products] can help repair your lipid barrier and speed up healing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what Dr. Mikailov says to put on sunburn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/KPAway-Organic-Friendly-Keratosis-Emollient\/dp\/B01LXPPCJP?ref_=ast_sto_dp&amp;th=1&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>KP Away Lipid Repair Emollient<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThis is the only cream on the market that has organic coconut oil that actually absorbs,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was designed for the most sensitive skin to regenerate our natural skin oil and skin barrier. Coconut oil is a super ingredient that is naturally antimicrobial.\u201d That means it may be helpful against preventing infections, which can result in severe cases of sunburn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Badger-Aloe-Vera-Gel-4oz\/dp\/B079P7J5DK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Badger Aloe Vera Gel<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cI always look for minimum ingredients,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. \u201cThis one has very few ingredients and comes in 50 percent-recycled packaging.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0013L55U0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Burt&#8217;s Bees After Sun Soother<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cIn addition to aloe vera and coconut oil, it has anti-inflammatory ingredients like bisabolol and honey.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>What about the old wive\u2019s tale about shaving cream for sunburn? There\u2019s no evidence to show that using this product will help. However, some shaving creams contain hydrating ingredients that may help symptoms somewhat. Still, you\u2019re better off using a thick cream that\u2019s dermatologist-approved. Same goes for the trend of using vinegar for sunburn. The harsh ingredient will only cause pain upon application and will dry out your skin, causing more irritation.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-avoid-exfoliation\">Avoid Exfoliation<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Speaking of those annoying white flakes, you may be tempted to slough them off with an exfoliant. But Mikailov says any kind of exfoliation (physical and chemical) should be avoided, as it will only cause more irritation. Instead, keep applying heavy creams until the flaking and redness subside. (And yes, that also means you should avoid peeling sunburn.)<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steer-clear-of-harsh-products\">Steer Clear of Harsh Products<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>As a general skincare rule, it\u2019s best to avoid extremely harsh products (or use them sparingly). However, when you\u2019re dealing with sunburn it\u2019s especially important to do so. If you\u2019re using tretinoin or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-use-retinol\/\">retinol<\/a>, it\u2019s best to discontinue use until your skin is fully healed. Dr. Mikailov also suggests avoiding products with dye and fragrance, as these ingredients can be irritating.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMint and witch hazel should also be avoided, as they can potentially irritate sun-damaged skin,\u201d he says. \u201cNeosporin should be avoided\u2014it is the number one cause of allergic contact dermatitis in North America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drink-extra-water\">Drink Extra Water<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>We all know it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-is-it-important-to-stay-hydrated\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">important to stay hydrated<\/a>. But it\u2019s especially important if you\u2019re dealing with sun damage. Sunburn draws fluid to the skin\u2019s surface and away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> of the body, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-skin-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)<\/a>. Drinking extra water when you are sunburned will help prevent dehydration.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-combat-uv-damage-with-supplements\">Combat UV Damage with Supplements<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>No matter how careful you are with sunscreen, sun damage can happen to anyone. altogether. Experiencing five or more blistering sunburns between ages 15 and 20 increases one\u2019s melanoma risk by 80 percent and nonmelanoma skin cancer risk by 68 percent, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-skin-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AAD<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Word to the wise: Getting a \u201cbase tan\u201d at a local tanning bed won\u2019t protect you from getting sunburn\u2014and it will only increase your chances of getting skin cancer later in life, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-skin-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AAD<\/a>. \u201cNo one needs a \u2018base tan\u2019 to avoid a sunburn\u2014the best way to avoid a sunburn is to use the proper sun protection,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. \u201cFor those with red hair and quick-to-burn skin types, you must be much more rigorous than those who tan easily.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Another myth Dr. Mikailov wants to bust? Patients with darker skin don\u2019t experience sunburn because their skin naturally contains melanin. \u201cDarker skin can burn as well, but it may not be as easily noticeable compared to lighter skin,\u201d he says. Regardless of your skin tone, \u201cEveryone should wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-layering-spf-work\/\">SPF<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The best approaches to avoiding sunburn include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Minimize exposure during the highest UV index hours<\/strong> which are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wear UPF clothing.<\/strong> \u201cUPF fabric is significantly superior to non-UPF fabric,\u201d Dr. Mikailov says. \u201cA standard white cotton polo shirt will provide a protection factor of about eight to 10 SPF, whereas the specialized fabrics will have an SPF of 50 or greater.\u201d He recommends brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolibar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coolibar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mott50.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mott50<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wear UPF hats<\/strong> to protect the delicate skin on your face from UV damage.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p><strong>Apply appropriate sunscreen regularly.<\/strong> Look for broad-spectrum SPF with at least an SPF of 30.
