We spoke to trichologists about why hair looks and feel greasier in the summer compared to other times of the year. Plus, they share their best tips on how to get rid of oily hair during the warmer season so you can flaunt your luscious locks all summer long.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-my-hair-so-oily-in-the-summer\">Why Is My Hair So Oily in the Summer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"7b7872\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7b7872;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/how-to-get-rid-of-greasy-hair.jpg\" alt=\"how to get rid of greasy hair\" class=\"wp-image-31022 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>There are several reasons why you\u2019re experiencing greasy hair in the summer. But all that excess sweat can cause your hair to look greasy. \u201cHair gets more oily in the summertime mainly because the scalp produces more sebum,\u201d says Justin M. Hueston, trichologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/thescalplab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Scalp Lab<\/a>. \u201cBecause we sweat more in the summer and our sebaceous glands are more active, it causes extra sebum production (the oily substance that moisturizes and protects our skin.)\u201d This is because as the sebaceous glands become active, sebum is released (causing an oily appearance).<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-youre-wearing-your-hair-up-more-often\">You\u2019re Wearing Your Hair Up More Often<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>When the temperatures rise, you may be tempted to tie your hair up off your neck. But Hueston explains that this strategy can backfire when dealing with oily hair because it brings the hair closer to the scalp, where oil is produced. \u201cIt\u2019s best not to keep your hair tied up for really long periods of time,\u201d he says. Hueston also recommends ponytails over buns because it keeps the hair further away from the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Another tip? Avoid tying your hair up when you head to bed. \u201cTry not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/mighty-night\/\">sleep<\/a> with your hair up because it can cause your hair to be more greasy, but even worse it can cause thinning and damage to the scalp,\u201d Hueston adds.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-youre-brushing-your-hair-too-much\">You\u2019re Brushing Your Hair Too Much<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s understandable that your hair may end up being styled more in warmer months\u2014from ponytails for your outdoor runs to poolside braids and wedding guest looks, you may spend more time taking your hair up and down. But experts recommend stepping away from the hairbrush. Hueston explains that since hair is already more oily during this time, brushing it too much further spreads the oil down the hair shaft, making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/types-of-rest\/\">rest<\/a> of your hair look oily too, not just the roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-youre-not-applying-your-conditioner-properly\">You\u2019re Not Applying Your Conditioner Properly<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While conditioner can help hydrate your hair and reduce unwelcome frizziness, it can also contribute to oily-looking hair. The best way to avoid that is to avoid applying it to your scalp. \u201cConditioner should only be used on the ends of the hair, not on the scalp area which can greatly add to the greasiness,\u201d Hueston says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-youre-outside-more\">You\u2019re Outside More<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>While spending time outside has several health benefits (such as reducing<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12199-009-0091-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> cortisol levels<\/a>, improving<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12199-008-0068-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> immunity<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/06\/23\/1510459112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> improving mental health<\/a>, all that time outdoors can cause oily hair. \u201cDuring the summer we tend to go outside more,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/martinelangsam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martine Langsam, IAT, WTS<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cAs a result, we are exposed to more contaminants from the air that settle on our hair.\u201d All of these contaminants become buildup on our scalps, which can trap sweat and oil\u2014leading to greasy-looking hair.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-youre-not-shampooing-your-hair-enough\">You\u2019re Not Shampooing Your Hair Enough<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Wondering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-often-should-you-wash-your-hair\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">how often you should be washing your hair<\/a>? It\u2019s probably more often than you think in the summertime. But James says regular washing is the key to a clean scalp in the summertime. \u201cWash your hair daily if you have excess oil,\u201d she says. \u201cFor kinky, coiled hair, wash every few days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner that you can use daily. \u201cA scalp exfoliation or scalp mask will help keep your scalp clean once a week,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-give-yourself-a-scalp-massage\">Give Yourself a Scalp Massage<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Want to get the most out of your showers? Try adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/scalp-massage-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">scalp massage<\/a>. \u201cAnother trick is to do scalp massage before you shampoo, which will help purge excess sebum out of your sebaceous glands allowing you to shampoo it out before it builds up on the scalp,\u201d Langsam says. For best results, try using some kind of exfoliating product (like a scalp scrub) to perform a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/scalp-detox\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">scalp detox<\/a>. It will help completely unclog your scalp and leave it clean and grease-free after the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-double-shampoo\">Double Shampoo<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Another way to get rid of oily hair in the summer? It\u2019s true\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6471406\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> shows that a high intake of sugar can trigger sebum production and cause oily skin (including the scalp).
