Not exactly, according to experts. While the drink does have some serious benefits, it doesn\u2019t burn fat or help you shed pounds like many claim. These are the top lemon water claims:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lemon water helps you lose weight<\/li><li>Lemon water helps you poop<\/li><li>Lemon water reduces bloat<\/li><li>Lemon water is alkalizing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what the experts had to say about those claims.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-lemon-water-help-you-lose-weight\">Does Lemon Water Help You Lose Weight?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c2bcb2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c2bcb2;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lemon-water-for-weight-loss.jpg\" alt=\"lemon water for weight loss\" class=\"wp-image-30570 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, lemon water alone does not cause weight loss,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gracefulnutrition.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grace Terrell<\/a>, certified holistic nutritionist. \u201cI think [this myth] so popular because it\u2019s a seemingly easy \u2018quick fix\u2019 and it&#8217;s not an expensive supplement and doesn&#8217;t take much effort\u2014so I get it, I&#8217;d want to believe it too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But unfortunately, lemon water isn\u2019t a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/7-extreme-diets-rated\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">magical weight loss solution<\/a>. \u201cHowever water itself can indirectly help with weight loss by boosting the metabolism and helping you feel fuller faster, so lemon water has those same benefits,&#8221; Vaca-Flores says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When you ingest water, the body responds by warming it to match your body\u2019s core temperature, Vaca-Flores says. This heating process causes a quick boost in your metabolism. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14671205\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researchers<\/a> have found that drinking two cups of water at a time can increase your metabolism by 30 percent, though only for around 20 to 30 minutes. \u201cAlthough this boost is only temporary, it can be beneficial during a weight loss journey,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Additionally, water can help you feel fuller faster by taking up space in the stomach\u2014reducing feelings of hunger. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19661958\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> has shown that this can lead to fewer calories consumed, which is ideal for people trying to lose weight.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Terrell says staying hydrated with water (or lemon water) can help you lose weight in a couple of ways. \u201cIf you\u2019re dehydrated, your organs aren\u2019t functioning as well, which can have an impact on many processes that help us maintain a healthy weight,\u201d she says. \u201cIt can also help your performance in the gym. If we\u2019re dehydrated, we tend to fatigue much more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>There is one situation in which drinking lemon water for weight loss might work, however. While <a href=\"http:\/\/irep.iium.edu.my\/1705\/1\/fin170.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> confirms that vitamin C has a laxative effect, lemon water likely won\u2019t cause that reaction. \u201cYou&#8217;re not getting enough vitamin C from a squeeze of lemon juice to have any sort of laxative effect, Terrell says. \u201cYou&#8217;d need around 2,000 milligrams to have an effect, and a squeeze of lemon would have about 30 milligrams of vitamin C.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The one exception? Warm lemon water. \u201cIf you have warm lemon water, that can help stimulate and warm up the bowels\u201d Terrell adds. It\u2019s true\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27684632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> has confirmed that drinking warm water has a favorable impact on intestinal movements. There\u2019s not much of a difference between drinking warm plain water or drinking warm lemon water aside from taste and a small extra dose of vitamin C (which is never a bad thing).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling with irregularity or constipation, make sure you\u2019re getting enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a>. Incorporating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-detox-foods\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">detoxifying foods<\/a> that are high in fiber can help promote healthy bowel movements. Fortunately, the citric acid in lemon water can boost the production of stomach acids and fluids that can help break down food in your stomach for better digestion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the other nutrients in lemons can help support your digestive system. \u201cLemon water may help with bloating due to the potassium assisting the nervous function of the GI system, helping to remove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\">gas<\/a> and waste products from the body.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Still, it\u2019s important to remember that it\u2019s not a magical elixir that will give you a flat stomach. Drinking plain water is still your best bet for a healthy functioning digestive tract. \u201cNo studies have shown that drinking lemon water versus plain water has any impact on the way we digest food,\u201d Terrell says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bloating\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">struggle with bloating<\/a>, consider adding a digestive enzyme (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/23\/flatter-me\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">HUM Nutrition\u2019s Flatter Me<\/a>) into your routine to help break down the food you&#8217;re eating and boost your digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-lemon-water-alkalize-your-system\">Does Lemon Water Alkalize Your System?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Another lemon myth Terrell wants to bust? That this drink alkalizes the body (read: increases the pH above 7). \u201cOur bodies do an amazing job at regulating our pH, and what we eat and drink has no effect on the pH of our blood,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lime-water-vs-lemon-water\">Lime Water Vs. Lemon Water<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>What about other citrus-infused waters, like lime water? Despite lemon water\u2019s popularity, experts say there\u2019s no real benefit to choosing lemon water over lime water. \u201cLemons and limes are pretty similar when it comes to their micronutrient density,\u201d Hanway explains. \u201cLemons contain more citric acid than limes, and contain more potassium and magnesium, but limes have higher amounts of phosphorous, Vitamins A and C, calcium, and folate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So if life gives you lemons or limes, go ahead and squeeze them into your water for a hydrating treat.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-takeaway\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efe6d1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efe6d1;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lemon-water-for-weight-loss-lemons.jpg\" alt=\"lemon water for weight loss lemons\" class=\"wp-image-30573 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Despite being touted as a miracle drink, lemon water alone won\u2019t cause much change in your body. Still, it\u2019s worth incorporating into your routine to help you drink more water (something we all could do more of).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrinking lemon water can encourage people to drink more water overall, which has benefits for every metabolic function in the body,\u201d Hanway says. \u201cIt can also be a great replacement for more caloric or caffeinated beverages and has some vitamin C, which is an important antioxidant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But if you\u2019re hoping to see dramatic results, you won\u2019t find them simply from this drink. \u201cLemon water is a great thing to add into your routine,\u201d Terrell says. \u201cIt helps you hydrate, tastes good, and is refreshing, but it&#8217;s not a magical weight loss or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-detox-foods\/\">detox<\/a> tool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>And, of course, there\u2019s no need to drink lemon water every day if you don\u2019t want to.
