Until I turned 30, it was a good day if I even washed my face, and I had no complaints about my skin, so it worked out just fine. But in the past couple of years, I\u2019ve started to turn my attention to my skin in hopes of slowing the visible signs of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mostly, I\u2019ve been slathering on things at random that have been gifted by friends or beauty brands, with no real \u201cplan.\u201d But\u2014I\u2019m a total science nerd and the more I\u2019ve learned about skin science, the more I\u2019ve been thinking about empirical methods for making sure my skincare routine is *actually* doing what I want it to.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>All this research led me to the skin microbiome. Learning more about your unique skin microbiome could hold the key to your most personalized skincare routine ever. The skin microbiome plays a similar role. An imbalance of good and bad bacteria on your skin has been linked to skin conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/ajd.12435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eczema<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6678709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acne<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmicb.2019.00438\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psoriasis<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-impacts-your-skin-microbiome\">What Impacts Your Skin Microbiome?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of the activities we do on a daily basis can disrupt your microbiome and leave it unbalanced, thus making your skin susceptible to overgrowth of certain bacteria &amp; fungi,\u201d says Dr. Jungman. Yikes!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s modern world, our microbiomes are under attack from a myriad of triggers. The environment you live in, the skincare you choose, medications, hormonal imbalances, sweat, and so much more can contribute to an unbalanced skin microbiome,\u201d she says. These are some of the top offenders:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-skincare-routine\">Your Skincare Routine<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a skincare junkie, you may think you\u2019re doing your skin a favor with a diligent multi-step routine, but less is more when it comes to keeping your microbiome balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cPopular 10-step skincare routines can be harmful to your microbiome and rely on a multitude of products to undo the damage caused,\u201d explains Dr. Jungman. \u201cFor example, many facial cleansers strip your skin of its moisturizing barrier and force you to use creams, serums, and oils to correct the dryness caused from stripping.\u201d (Ok, is it just me, or is anyone else recalling the cleansers they used in high school\u2026?)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis creates a toxic cycle of overuse and redundancy, and your skin could still be suffering in the process,\u201d Dr. Jungman says. \u201cThe average woman uses over 100 ingredients every day on their skin. The result? An unbalanced and oversaturated microbiome that is not performing at its best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nutrition\">Nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough my research in skin science and the microbiome, the link between diet and skin health became abundantly clear,\u201d says Dr. Jungman. (Check out the 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/food-for-healthy-skin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">best foods for healthy skin<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She explains that diets high in processed foods and sugar can negatively impact your microbiome, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-and-types-of-leafy-greens\/\">leafy greens<\/a>, fresh fruit, whole grains, and hearty proteins will aid your microbiome. \u201cThese fresh and healthful ingredients are densely packed with antioxidants, nutrients, and more that directly impact your skin.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stress\">Stress<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>You already know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/4-ways-stress-affects-beauty-skin-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">stress can be detrimental<\/a> to your health in the long run, but it can also mess with your skin microbiome. \u201cStudies show that chronic stress can weaken your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-the-immune-system-works\/\">immune system<\/a> and cause flare-ups of skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis,\u201d explains Dr. Jungman.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Primarily, this comes down to the stress hormone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\">cortisol<\/a>. \u201cRepeated stress can raise your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-awareness-day-boost-happiness-lower-cortisol\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">cortisol levels<\/a> to raise and lower your immune system response,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So how exactly does that tie back to your skin? Your skin microbiome is an immune system in itself, explains Dr. Jungman, because it protects your body from outside irritants and harmful bacteria.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/stress-reduction-techniques\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Stress reduction techniques<\/a>, like yoga and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-start-meditating\/\">meditation<\/a>, can help you de-stress and balance your skin microbiome.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-do-a-skin-microbiome-test\">How to Do A Skin Microbiome Test<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Armed with this info, I was ready to do a skin microbiome test to find out just how healthy\u2014or unhealthy\u2014my skin microbiome really was. To find out what your skin microbiome looks like, you can take a skin swab test. Dr. Jungman spent years researching and developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/dr-ej.com\/products\/skin-microbiome-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skin Microbiome Kit<\/a>, which makes it easy to test your microbiome at home.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She recommends it for women that have skin concerns that range from hormonal changes and stress to acne, sensitive skin, rosacea, psoriasis, or eczema.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Skin Microbiome Kit is the perfect place to better understand your skin, and what bacteria could be causing these issues,\u201d says Dr. Jungman.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Once I had my kit, the instructions recommend washing your face before bed and not using any product. In the morning, before washing your face or using any product, you perform the swab. The kit itself comes with easy-to-follow instructions and you\u2019ll also get a link to a video that shows you exactly how to complete the swab. (TBH, it reminded me of a rapid COVID test for my face.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"998f85\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #998f85;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/skin-microbiome-test-kit.jpg\" alt=\"skin microbiome test kit\" class=\"wp-image-30129 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"997b69\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #997b69;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/skin-microbiome-swab.jpg\" alt=\"skin microbiome swab\" class=\"wp-image-30130 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After following the instructions to swab my forehead and collect as many microorganisms as possible, the swab is placed into a test tube, and popped into your freezer for at least 24 hours before shipping off to the lab to be analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I also completed an online questionnaire about my skin concerns and lifestyle. All of this info was used to compile my personal skincare recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-skin-microbiome-test-results\">My Skin Microbiome Test Results<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not gonna lie, I love getting good grades. While my test results weren\u2019t perfect, my skin microbiome was actually pretty balanced. My microbiome overview showed I had 3,392,206 bacterial cells and 8,748 fungal cells. These numbers, plus the number of bacterial and fungal species and diversity of bacteria were used to calculate my microbiome score. On a scale of -2 to +2, my score clocked in at +.97. I\u2019ll take it! This is a sign that my skin microbiome is pretty well balanced.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I had an adequate amount of beneficial bacteria, but the test also detected some potentially harmful bacteria. The report categorized microorganisms as either disruptive, bad, unknown, good, or beneficial.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Looking through the report of the top 10 bacteria and top 10 fungi found on my forehead, most of mine fell into the \u201cgood\u201d category on the microbiome scale, but the one that stood out to me the most was <em>Aspergillus <\/em>sp, which accounted for about 22 percent of my fungi and is classified as \u201cbad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fungi and bacteria are usually categorized as \u2018bad\u2019 if research shows that they could be potentially harmful to the skin,\u201d explains Dr. Jungman. \u201cIn the case of <em>Aspergillus<\/em> sp., it is a common group of fungi that are mostly found in the environment such as soil, plants, air, marine habitats, etc.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I live in New York City, so who <em>knows <\/em>what\u2019s in the air hitting my face every day. This wasn\u2019t super surprising, but should I be concerned? Probably not. Dr. Jungman explained that not all species of <em>Aspergillus<\/em> are harmful, but a few have been shown to cause skin infections in people with weak immune systems.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-new-skincare-action-plan\">My New Skincare Action Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d1cfc4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d1cfc4;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/microbiome-skincare-routine.jpg\" alt=\"Skin Microbiome Routine \" class=\"wp-image-30128 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While my skin microbiome looked pretty good, I definitely have room to improve the amount of \u201cbeneficial\u201d bacteria on my face.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>My Skin Microbiome Kit results contained two plans for getting back on track. First, a recovery routine meant to be used until you feel more satisfied and happy with your skin. Then, a maintenance routine that introduces more active ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough actives are a good way to deal with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/the-best-vitamins-for-skin\/\">skin issues<\/a> such as hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, we recommend strengthening the skin barrier with the recovery routine so that the actives could work without irritating your skin,\u201d says Dr. Jungman.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since my skin was already in pretty good shape and I have no major complaints, I got the go-ahead to skip straight to the maintenance phase.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The best part about the products and ingredients recommended for me? They\u2019re surprisingly minimalistic. \u201cA less is more approach is always good for the skin and its microbes,\u201d explains Dr. Jungman. That definitely fits my own ethos, so I was relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick rundown on some of my recommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ingredients\">Ingredients<\/h3>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bakuchiol\">Bakuchiol<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been seeing this natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-use-retinol\/\">retinol<\/a> alternative everywhere recently, so was excited to see this on my list.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lactic-acid-aha\">Lactic acid (AHA)<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Alpha hydroxy acid is a chemical exfoliant that\u2019s not in my skincare routine right now, so this is another good one to add.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ceramides\">Ceramides<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beautypie.com\/us\/products\/superactive-capsules-ceramides\">Beauty Pie\u2019s Superactive Capsules,<\/a> which contain concentrated ceramides for a few months now and love them, so I\u2019m happy to keep these as part of my nightly routine.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oat-kernel-extract-colloidal-oatmeal\">Oat kernel extract + Colloidal oatmeal<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>These soothing, moisturizing ingredients make a lot of sense for my mildly rosacea-prone skin.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-products\">Products<\/h3>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cleanser\">Cleanser<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>My routine recommends a gentle cleanser, like <a href=\"https:\/\/oseamalibu.com\/products\/ocean-cleanser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Osea\u2019s Ocean Cleanser<\/a>, which I\u2019ve used before and really liked. I\u2019m currently using <a href=\"https:\/\/drloretta.com\/collections\/gentle-face-cleanser\/products\/gentle-hydrating-cleanser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Loretta\u2019s Gentle Hydrating Cleanser<\/a>, which seems to fit the bill, so I\u2019ll be sticking to that for now.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-moisturizer\">Moisturizer<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Most of my moisturizer recommendations were serums or oils. I usually prefer a lightweight moisturizer or gel in the a.m., so this will be a switch for me! I\u2019m planning to try the <a href=\"https:\/\/dr-ej.com\/products\/start-over-moisturizing-serum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Elsa Jungman Start Over Moisturizing Serum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sun-protection\">Sun Protection<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Essential, of course!<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vitamin-c\">Vitamin C<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Right now I\u2019m using a moisturizer with Vitamin C, but it\u2019s not a concentrated dose. Upon reading the full label, I also discovered it contains Phenoxyethanol, a preservative that my Skin Microbiome Report cautions against, as it can cause sensitization. Instead, I\u2019ll likely switch to one of my new recommendations, like <a href=\"https:\/\/commonheir.com\/products\/vitamin-c-serum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common Heir\u2019s Vitamin C Serum.<\/a> I like that it comes in biodegradable capsules that are eco-friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-longevity-support-serum\">Longevity Support (Serum)<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>There were lots of different options in my recommendations, but <a href=\"https:\/\/us.bybi.com\/products\/bakuchiol-skin-booster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BYBI Beauty\u2019s Bakuchiol Booster<\/a> caught my eye\u2014I\u2019m excited to check it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nutrition\">Nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brazil-nuts\">Brazil nuts<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>This powerful nut is packed with selenium, which helps with skin elasticity. I rarely eat them, so this is a good reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collagen-peptides\">Collagen peptides<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>These are a big favorite of HUM Nutrition\u2019s dietitians for skin health too, and I love <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/51\/collagen-pop\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">HUM\u2019s Collagen Pop<\/a>.
