But chances are, you could be skipping one major step in your oral hygiene routine: tongue scraping.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany folks, even with great oral hygiene, neglect their tongues,\u201d says Chris Salierno, DDS, Chief Dental Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellotend.com\/\">tend<\/a>. Your tongue actually deserves just as much attention as you give to brushing your teeth and flossing daily. That\u2019s where tongue scraping comes in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Tongue scraping has been around for years, but a new wave of stylish-looking tongue scrapers and a surge of interest in tongue scraping from influencers and celebs have put it back into the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m always on the lookout for easy, low-effort ways to upgrade my health, so I decided to give it a try. Learn more about the science behind this practice, the potential benefits of tongue scraping, and my results after two weeks of tongue scraping.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-tongue-scraping\">What is Tongue Scraping?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Tongue scraping involves using a special tool to remove the bacteria and tiny pieces of food from the surface of your tongue. Basically, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dermaplaning-how-to\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">dermaplaning<\/a> for oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"aea69b\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aea69b;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tongue-scraper.jpg\" alt=\"tongue scraper \" class=\"wp-image-29179 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven after properly brushing and flossing, there will still be bacteria in your mouth,\u201d says Whitney DiFoggio, a registered dental hygienist and founder of the YouTube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCoWqwg_7NXuvoJZIgzHf8Dw\">Teeth Talk Girl<\/a>. \u201cThis bacteria is found on the tongue due to trapped food debris between the tiny papillae, small, finger-like projections that cover the surface on your tongue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Papillae are known for harboring as much as 90 percent of the bacteria that causes bad breath, says DiFoggio.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>There are over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/labs\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4746253\/\">six billion bacteria<\/a> in the mouth, but just as with the gut microbiome, not all bacteria in your mouth are bad. Good bacteria in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-microbiome-gut-skin-oral-vaginal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">oral microbiome<\/a> help to prevent things like plaque and gingivitis. Bad bacteria can lead to bad breath and oral health issues. By targeting the spot where more harmful bacteria live\u2014your tongue\u2014you\u2019ll allow the good bacteria to flourish.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-of-tongue-scraping\">Benefits of Tongue Scraping<\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-improves-bad-breath\">Improves Bad Breath<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If you deal with chronic halitosis or even occasional morning breath, tongue scraping is your new bestie. \u201cThere are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/labs\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1570844\/\">numerous studies<\/a> that show the common sources of bad breath are from bacteria and food debris around teeth, beneath gums, and in the crevices of the tongue,\u201d says Dr. Salierno.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Tongue scraping is especially beneficial if you\u2019ve been eating any smelly foods, like garlic, onions, or tuna, says DiFoggio.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heightens-sense-of-taste\">Heightens Sense of Taste<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen used properly, tongue scraping might actually help your taste buds to work even better than before because germs won\u2019t be covering them,\u201d explains DiFoggio. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32978806\/\">2021 study<\/a> found that there was a statistically significant improvement in taste function among 65 participants who used a tongue cleaner for 14-days.<br><br>\u201cWhen your tongue isn\u2019t coated with thick bacteria, your taste buds come into better contact with your food,\u201d says DiFoggio. \u201cYou\u2019ll enjoy richer tasting meals and all of the flavors that you couldn\u2019t before. Removing layers of buildup across your tongue can make your palate more sensitive to the rich tastes of all your favorite dishes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-improves-tongues-look-and-feel\">Improves Tongue\u2019s Look and Feel<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHealthy tongues have a nice pink color to them,\u201d says DiFoggio. \u201cHowever, if there are splotchy areas of white or brown or black across them, they aren\u2019t just smelly \u2014 they can also be unattractive.\u201d Having a clean-feeling tongue can help to boost your self-confidence, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-may-promote-overall-health\">May Promote Overall Health<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Tongue cleaning has roots in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/ayurveda-diet\/\">Ayurveda<\/a> and is mentioned in <em>Charaka Samhita<\/em>, a medical text from ancient India that is still referred to by many today. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29458938\/\">2017 study<\/a> evaluated the impact of tongue cleaning on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-digestion-works\/\">digestion<\/a>, which is believed to be a benefit in Ayurvedic medicine. The research found that after four weeks, participants did have improvements in constipation and overall oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>DiFoggio says tongue scraping can contribute to overall health by removing toxins from entering the body due to the removal of bacteria from the tongue. \u201cHaving a cleaner tongue means you\u2019re not swallowing all those oral bacteria every time you eat or drink something. A review in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17004573\/\"><em>General Dentistry<\/em><\/a> of two different studies on using a tongue scraper versus brushing your tongue found that using a tongue cleaner or the tongue scraper produced a statistically significant difference in reducing levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) as compared to brushing your tongue with a toothbrush.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15341360\/\">Another study<\/a> found that tongue scraping reduced VSCs by 75 percent while brushing reduced them by 45 percent. But not all research has been so conclusive: A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35010368\/\">2021 study<\/a> found no difference in bad breath or tongue coating among those who used a scraper vs. a toothbrush.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Still, if you\u2019re without a tongue scraper, brushing your tongue may provide some benefits over doing nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-you-use-a-tongue-scraper\">Should You Use A Tongue Scraper?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Like brushing your teeth and flossing, tongue scraping is another great method for better oral hygiene. \u201cTongue scraping is a best practice for everyone, but it\u2019s especially important for people who suffer from bad breath (halitosis),\u201d says Dr. Salierno. \u201cAnd if you use tobacco products, drink coffee, tea, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>, or eat heavy-scented foods like onions and garlic, then the tongue scraper will help you recover your fresh breath,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Salierno recommends a tongue scraper as part of your morning routine to fight off any morning breath. \u201cSome extra tongue attention once or twice during the day can help more than a mint,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-a-tongue-scraper\">How to Use A Tongue Scraper<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTongue scraping is easy!\u201d says Dr. Salierno. Ready to start scraping? Follow these tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stick our your tongue.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>Place the scraper as far as you comfortably can and use gentle pressure to press down onto your tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Go back to front.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>Gently but firmly scrape from back to front in one motion.\u00a0 Move slowly to capture the tongue gunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rinse and clean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>Rinse away the debris with warm water and repeat a few more times. \u201cYour focus should be on the top part of the tongue, which has the velvety appearance of bumps and grooves,\u201d Dr. Salierno says. When you\u2019re done, make be sure to rinse your scraper. If you want, you can also rinse it periodically with mouthwash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t overdo it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>Curious if tongue scraping can damage your taste buds? What\u2019s not to love about fresh breath, better-tasting food, and an overall clean-feeling tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I wanted a tongue scraper that looked cute so I\u2019d be more likely to use it, so I got Tend\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellotend.com\/shop\/products\/the-tidy-tongue\">Tidy Tongue<\/a>, which is made of stainless steel and has nice grips.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>My first reaction after my first tongue scrape was that my tongue felt, well, really clean. There was no weird residue and the garlicky, oniony taste from my meal that I can sometimes sense even after brushing my teeth was gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Where a thin film of whatever stuff on my tongue that I had deemed &#8220;normal&#8221; used to be, there was none. My tongue felt a little scratched\u2014I may have gone too hard, but it wasn&#8217;t painful.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Over the next days of tongue scraping, I perfected the pressure needed and took the tip from Dr. Salierno to go over my tongue a few times instead of trying to scrape it all off in one fell swoop.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I tried to scrap my tongue both in the A.M. and P.M., usually before I brushed my teeth because, anecdotally, it made my mouth feel fresher than when I tried it after brushing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sometimes it felt more effective than others\u2014I notice the biggest difference after eating something with onions, which I\u2019m quite sensitive to, and first thing in the morning. With more frequent scraping, I could definitely tell my tongue was getting \u201ccleaner\u201d the more consistent I was. Honestly, it made tongue scraping less fun because there wasn\u2019t as much gunk to look out for, but it was definitely doing its job.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choosing-the-best-tongue-cleaner-for-you\">Choosing the Best Tongue Cleaner for You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"debc82\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #debc82;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/metal-tongue-scraper.jpg\" alt=\"tongue scraping\" class=\"wp-image-29183 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe type of material doesn\u2019t matter when using a tongue scraper,\u201d says DiFoggio. It\u2019s more important to choose the one you\u2019ll most enjoy using, she explains. \u201cIf you like how it feels then you\u2019ll tend to use it more.\u201d That said, there are some reasons you may want to choose one type of tongue scraper over another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stainless steel tongue scraper<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Metal tongue scrapers can sometimes be dishwasher safe and won\u2019t need to be replaced as often, says<strong> <\/strong>DiFoggio, which can also make it a more sustainable option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Copper tongue scraper<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Copper tongue cleaners are favored in Ayurvedic medicine. Copper is naturally anti-bacterial, but the downside is that copper can tarnish, so copper tongue scrapers require some maintenance to keep them shiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plastic tongue cleaner<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>If you have a bad gag reflex, a flexible plastic tongue cleaner, like these from Supersmile, could be a good option for you. These tend to give you a little more control and feel less invasive than other models. The downside is that plastic tongue scrapers usually need to be replaced every three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tongue cleaner brush<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>If you have a particularly sensitive tongue and want something extra-gentle that\u2019s a bit more effective than using your toothbrush, a tongue cleaner with silicone bristles, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentek.com\/store-locator?sku=856125002005\">DenTek\u2019s Orabrush<\/a> may be a good choice.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy best advice is to always read the tongue scraper\u2019s label instructions regarding proper cleaning and replacement,\u201d says DiFoggio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"products-block -mx-4 md:mx-0 my-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<a
