Typically a no-sugar diet results in increased energy, clearer skin, fewer cravings, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-much-weight-can-you-lose-in-a-month\/\">weight loss<\/a>, all of which really piqued my interest. So, does living without sugar live up to its promise of more energy and a smaller waist size? <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to see what two full months without sugar did for my cravings, energy, and overall sense of well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-sugar-bad-for-you\">Why is sugar bad for you?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Is sugar really so bad for you in the first place?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For starters, let&#8217;s look at what British scientist John Yudkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2016\/apr\/07\/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> in 1972: &#8220;If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive, that material would promptly be banned.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Yudkin\u00a0observed that sugar\u2014which is processed in the liver where it then turns to fat\u2014is &#8220;a pure carbohydrate, with all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2016\/apr\/07\/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nutrition stripped out<\/a>.&#8221; He also found that excess sugar consumption had a significant link to the growing rate of heart-related complications.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In the decades since, the sugar industry has only grown.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>First, it capitalizes on the sweet tooths of children and busy parents with the convenience of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/cereal-addict-grocery-intervention\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">sugary cereals<\/a>, snacks, and desserts. Sugar impacts everything, and we mean such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weight gain\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tooth decay\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatty liver disease\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insulin resistance\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brain function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s no secret that consuming too much sugar can have negative effects on the body. A few key things to understand are that it can cause weight gain and put you at higher risk of type 2 diabetes. It can also affect your mental health! Yes, your mental health! <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12888-024-05531-7#:~:text=After%20adjusting%20for%20potential%20confounders,1.40%2C%20P%20%3C%200.001).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A recent study <\/a>found that increasing your sugar intake by 100 g\/ a day correlated to a 28% increase in depression. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-i-quit-sugar-for-8-weeks\">Why I Quit Sugar for 8 Weeks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"826e65\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #826e65;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Why-is-sugar-bad-for-you-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman adding sugar packet to coffee to illustrate why sugar is bad for your health\" class=\"wp-image-24506 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>In light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/effects-of-sugar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">side effects of sugar<\/a> on your health, it&#8217;s wise to aim to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limit added sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on real, whole foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be mindful of overall sugar intake<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why I went eight weeks without sugar to see if all its promises and challenges were true.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Inspired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/iquitsugar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Quit Sugar program<\/a>\u00a0by Sarah Wilson, <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">I took the plunge. This program isn&#8217;t about cutting calories, which is great because that never works for me\u2014I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/satiating-diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">feel deprived<\/a> and rebel. Conversely, the program centers around adding more nutritious foods in sugar&#8217;s place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">She makes the distinction that fructose is what we want to avoid in sugar, as this is what makes us eat more, converts into fat, and makes us more susceptible to feeling sluggish and generally unwell.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Luckily, this program allows for certain types of red wine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-many-cups-of-coffee-per-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">coffee<\/a>, so you can still enjoy some things you really love!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-no-sugar-challenge-food-diary\">My No-Sugar Challenge Food diary<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>This no-sugar diet challenge was one I was ready to take on head first. My goals for following a sugar-free diet over eight weeks were to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have more energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lose inches around my waist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>feel lighter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attain a healthier lifestyle full of whole, nutritious foods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-1-feeling-pretty-good\">Week 1: Feeling Pretty Good<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>For this week, I was supposed to limit my intake of sugary drinks, desserts, high-fructose fruits, and chocolate. Luckily, this wasn&#8217;t that hard for me since I already don\u2019t like sugary drinks or eat too much dessert.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, I do love fruit, so I&#8217;m happy that the first week was just a transitional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a> to slowly reduce sugar. It&#8217;s a much easier way to transition so I can mentally prepare!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While giving up coffee isn&#8217;t part of the program, I decided to so for the first week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/easy-ways-to-detox-your-body-naturally\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">help detox<\/a>. It was hard at first, but I began having hot water with lemon in the mornings to replace my coffee. This swap actually made me feel a lot better!<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-1-no-sugar-diet-results\">Week 1 No-Sugar Diet Results<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t notice too much of a difference in my skin or weight. However, I did feel clearer in my thinking, a little more energized, and less stressed out. It&#8217;s safe to say that the start of this no-sugar challenge wasn&#8217;t that bad! <\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-favorite-recipe-this-week\">My Favorite Recipe This Week<\/h4>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thrivingautoimmune.com\/coconut-cauliflower-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cauliflower rice with coconut oil<\/a>, salt, pepper, and cayenne. This was delicious and creamy, hearty to say the least. I learned that the body can&#8217;t tell what it actually wants with sugar in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As Sarah Wilson states in the program, &#8220;Whenever sugar is in the system, this is impossible to know as we are responding to cravings, highs and lows, and not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">true hunger<\/a> and need. It takes about two months to find your blank slate. After that, it&#8217;s over to you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I also realized that you have to be super careful about added sugar when dining out. I ordered green curry at a Thai restaurant, but had to have them remove the sugar because they add so much for flavoring.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Watch documentaries and read articles on why sugar is bad for you. It&#8217;ll totally get you motivated! My favorites are the documentaries <em>Fed Up<\/em> and <em>The Secrets of Sugar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-2-results\">Week 2 Results<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/foods-to-avoid-for-clear-skin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">skin has cleared<\/a> a little. I&#8217;m very aware and sensitive of added or artificial sugars in all foods.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-favorite-recipe-this-week\">My Favorite Recipe This Week<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Organic eggs with grass-fed butter, avocado, spinach, and bacon. The trick is to add more healthy oils, fats, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-need-protein\/\">protein<\/a> to satiate my sweet tooth. This is a great protein-packed meal as well, providing so many key nutrients to keep my energy levels up throughout the day. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-3-sugar-detox-meal-plan-in-full-swing-and-feeling-tired\">Week 3: Sugar Detox Meal Plan in Full Swing and Feeling Tired<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>This week, I finally started to get used to not having fruit. I don\u2019t like the taste of coffee as much, and I can tell if something has even the slightest bit of sugar or artificial sweetener.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-your-food-cravings-mean\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">starting to crave chocolate<\/a> and sweets, especially when I&#8217;m tired. When this happens, I force myself to eat real food. I&#8217;ve found that maybe I wasn\u2019t actually craving sweets, but was just sleepy or bored.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Tips:<\/strong> Have healthy no-sugar foods chopped, washed, and ready to grab for a quick fix.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In addition, meet the nine C&#8217;s! My stomach feels more toned and slim.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bonuses: I&#8217;m also saving money on coffee and by not eating out as much. I&#8217;ve been cooking way more. I feel better, save money on eating out, and crave less junk food!<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-favorite-recipe-this-week\">My Favorite Recipe This Week<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Lamb with vegetables, broccoli salad, and chicken with celery puree.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-4-feeling-better-than-before\">Week 4: Feeling Better Than Before<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m starting to get used to everything and have fewer cravings for sugar, caffeine, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/long-term-effects-of-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>. My body is changing even more (and so are my taste buds!) which is very interesting to observe.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve substituted full-fat Greek yogurt for ice cream and other sweets. It really does the trick when I&#8217;m longing for something naughty. I add in some chia seeds and it\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> When a craving kicks in, I get busy by running errands or taking a hot bath to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/does-hypnosis-work-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">trick my mind<\/a> to think of other things.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-4-results\">Week 4 Results<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>I had more energy, slept better, and felt more hydrated. I feel like I am really understanding the age-old question I have been asking myself: &#8220;Why is sugar bad for you&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-5-feeling-easy-breezy\">Week 5: Feeling Easy + Breezy<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>This week was so much easier. I&#8217;m totally used to no sugar now, and actually prefer it!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I have my recipes and go-to foods and snacks down to the T now, and I&#8217;m beginning to really enjoy them. I&#8217;m nervous to go back to having sugar in my diet because I don\u2019t want to open the floodgates and lose all my progress. I have to be careful when I can start letting it back in.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> I&#8217;ve been making lunch every day and eating at home almost every night. I think this is the key to staying healthy and eating only pure, whole foods. I noticed that once I opened the lid to allowing some sugar in with a few fruits, I wanted more.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sugar is so addicting once you open the taste for it again. Your brain releases different hormones and alas, the cravings kick in.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-6-results\">Week 6 Results<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>I have cravings for gluten-free cakes and organic ice cream. To celebrate, I ended up making a healthy dupe that included permitted fruits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A bit of tequila<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fresh grapefruit + lime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coconut aminos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sparkling water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Now, for some good news when it comes to alcohol on a no-sugar diet. As the program indicates, &#8220;Wine, beer, and pure spirits contain minimal fructose because the fructose in the fruit used to make the spirit is what converts to alcohol.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So luckily, this week I could add in the small amounts of sugar in these fruits and tequila to make my healthy margarita!<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-week-8-feeling-amazing\">Week 8: Feeling Amazing<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>I made it and can\u2019t believe I did it! I survived eight weeks without sugar and I feel amazing. Continue to drink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/product\/32\/raw-beauty\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Raw Beauty<\/a> mixed in 12 ounces of water first thing every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>2. Substitute dessert for fresh berries, a glass of wine, or little bit of grass-fed cheese with nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>3. Treat myself to full-fat Greek yogurt with chia seeds\u2014and sometimes raspberries if I want a touch of sweetness\u2014instead of ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>4. Snack on homemade \u201cnut bark\u201d instead of chocolate. My recipe includes almond butter mixed with coconut oil, cacao nibs, and coconut chips. Lay it flat on aluminum to freeze, then break up so it becomes a chocolate almond coconut bark.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>5. Opt for gluten-free foods whenever I can.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>6. Always choose grass-fed and organic meats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/dairy-and-acne\/\">dairy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>7. Cook more meals at home and take lunches to work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/50-dollar-grocery-budget\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">save money<\/a>. Plus, cooking is therapeutic and not as hard as I thought! It only takes a bit of planning and dedicating time for yourself which is harder than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>8. Choose red wine instead of sugary mixed drinks. (Red wine contains minimal fructose; the fructose in grapes is what ferments to become alcohol.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>9. Have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-and-types-of-leafy-greens\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">type of green<\/a> in every meal.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>10. <a I look forward to continue listening to my body so I can feel happy and full of vitality, life force, and natural energy!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, it was also great having a friend to do this with.
