If you\u2019re wondering how to be a better friend, you\u2019re not alone. Yes, you may have seen your coworkers when you popped into the office and attended several Zoom happy hours, but that\u2019s probably not the same as the face-to-face connection you\u2019ve been craving these last two years. There\u2019s also a chance those casual friendships with people you\u2019d catch up with in-person over a drink have lapsed, and closer friends might now be a plane ride away.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019ve drifted apart, your friendship doesn\u2019t have to be over. But it will take a commitment on both ends to mend things. \u201cFriendships are all about reciprocity, and if a relationship is totally one-sided, it\u2019s not really a true friendship,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedu.niu.edu\/cahe\/about\/faculty\/suzanne-degges-white.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suzanne Degges-White, PhD, LCPC<\/a>, Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University. Other keys to being a better best friend are self-work and self-awareness, too, psychologists say.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/pere.12187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a> have shown that close friendships are beneficial to your health because they enhance your mental functioning and well-being. That\u2019s why we put together an expert-backed guide on how to be a better friend to your best pals, long-distance buddies, and acquaintances alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c1c3b9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c1c3b9;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1185785201-1.jpg\" alt=\"friends hugging\" class=\"wp-image-28113 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-work-on-yourself-first\">1. <strong>Work on yourself first.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Before you can show up for any friend, you have to show up for yourself first. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be able to be a healthy friend if you\u2019re not working on your own growth journey,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shainnaali.com\/\">Shainna Ali, PhD, LMHC, NCC<\/a>. You should get to know your own communication style, needs, and boundaries, Dr. Ali advises. Consider journaling or speaking with a professional to fully understand all of these aspects of yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-define-your-needs\">2. <strong>Define your needs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Wondering how else to be a better friend? Assess what you\u2019re really looking for in a friendship. Dr. Ali recommends answering some questions you can start with on your quest to be a better friend, such as:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What do you believe are the qualities of a good friend?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What does a deep connection look like for you?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What\u2019s inherently aligned with who [you are]?&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-accept-that-some-friendships-will-go-deeper-than-others\">3. <strong>Accept that some friendships will go deeper than others.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Some friends you\u2019ll entrust with your deepest secrets, and others you\u2019ll grab a cocktail with once a year to catch up. That\u2019s okay. \u201cOver time, relationships either grow deeper, stall out, or just stay at a more surface level,\u201d says Dr. Degges-White.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The ingredients of a deeper friendship include mutual enjoyment of time spent together, caring, emotional investment in the relationship, and a higher level of self-disclosure, explains Dr. Degges-White. This isn\u2019t something you can force, which is why some friendships naturally won\u2019t go there. For example, it may be difficult to share personal details with colleagues at work, where there may be barriers in place that keep you from connecting emotionally.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>One way to explore whether a more casual friendship can go deeper is spending more quality time with the person, even if it\u2019s over the phone, and experimenting with your comfort level around upping that self-disclosure, suggests Dr. Degges-White.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-be-clear-when-communicating-especially-with-long-distance-friendships\">4. <strong>Be clear when communicating, especially with long-distance friendships.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has made many friendships that previously weren\u2019t long-distance. But that doesn\u2019t mean your friendship has to suffer. \u201cAll healthy relationships can be fostered without in-person connection,\u201d says Dr. Ali.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The key is establishing clear communication. One person might want to talk on the phone or FaceTime regularly, while another person might want to send quick texts back and forth instead and wait until you can both catch up in person. If you don\u2019t respect each other\u2019s boundaries, it\u2019s easy for miscommunications and missteps to happen in the friendship.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-if-a-friend-has-disappeared-check-in-on-them\">5. <strong>If a friend has disappeared, check in on them.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If someone\u2019s ghosting you, don\u2019t automatically assume the worst. Ask what\u2019s going on instead. \u201cReach out and offer support and let them know you care,\u201d says Dr. Degges-White. \u201cDon\u2019t place any additional expectations on the friend or try to \u2018guilt\u2019 them into being more engaged.\u201d If you and your friend have been drifting apart for some time, your friendship may require more of a commitment from both of you\u2014or this may be your sign to let the friendship go.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s normal for some friendships to naturally fall by the wayside. \u201cNot every friendship is going to be a lifetime commitment,\u201d says Dr. Degges-White.\u201d Some friendships, even super intense ones, may not thrive as people grow and circumstances shift.\u201d Deep friendships require a lot of effort, so it\u2019s normal to not have as many of them and to have a greater number of casual acquaintances as an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-send-quick-updates-especially-when-friendships-feel-draining\">6. <strong>Send quick updates, especially when friendships feel draining.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Maybe you don\u2019t have the time for a phone call or coffee date right now, or that one friend just sucks all your energy out whenever you catch up with them. When you\u2019re feeling drained or depleted, especially by certain friendships, give people a heads up. Let them know you still care, but you can\u2019t be there right now with a quick text or email, recommends Dr. Degges-White.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrue friends care about us and would much rather do what they can to support us than expect us to do things that drain us,\u201d Dr. Degges-White. That\u2019s a good way to at least keep the friendship alive and not give the other friend the idea that you\u2019re disappearing or neglecting the friendship. \u201cLetting folks know what\u2019s happening in your life and where you\u2019re at emotionally can eliminate problems before they even develop,\u201d Dr. Degges-White adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-when-it-comes-to-mending-friendship-rifts-both-of-you-need-to-be-all-in\">7. <strong>When it comes to mending friendship rifts, both of you need to be all in.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If something\u2019s going wrong with a friendship, or if that person isn\u2019t showing up for you the way you need, give that person a moment of grace. Gently ask if something\u2019s been going on in their life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Decipher whether or not this is a friendship worth saving (sometimes it just isn\u2019t, and you drift apart). If you choose to save the friendship, it\u2019s going to take teamwork, shared accountability, and often uncomfortable conversations, to call out what\u2019s been going on. \u201cSometimes we shy away from the difficult dialogue, like, \u2018I want to tell this person that they\u2019ve let me down, but I don\u2019t want to impose,\u2019\u201d Dr. Ali says. \u201cBut I\u2019ve seen friendships strengthen from having that dialogue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-if-youre-the-one-who-hasnt-been-the-greatest-friend-own-that\"><strong>8. If you\u2019re the one who hasn\u2019t been the greatest friend, own that.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Extend that same grace you\u2019d give a friend to yourself. Maybe you\u2019ve been struggling with your mental health, or maybe you haven\u2019t been able to physically attend important life events for one reason or another. Once you recognize you\u2019ve said hurtful things, made mistakes, or have been distant, take accountability. The next step is apologizing or seeking forgiveness from a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Continue to be honest with yourself, and evaluate whether that infraction (like not answering texts or phone calls, flaking out on plans, or talking about friends behind their back) is a habit for you. If you\u2019re noticing these patterns in multiple relationships in your life, consider working with a therapist to understand why. There\u2019s no instruction manual for being a good friend, which is why self-work is the key.
