That\u2019s because they\u2019re typically high in vitamins, minerals, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/benefits-of-soluble-fiber-vs-insoluble-fiber\/\">fiber<\/a> while also low in cholesterol and saturated fats. It all adds up:\u00a0 A plan-based diet supports your overall health. As the demand for plant-based alternatives rises, there are more processed foods available than ever. However, just because something\u2019s vegan or dairy-free doesn\u2019t necessarily mean it\u2019s healthier. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28728684\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent study<\/a> found that plant-based eaters who consumed a diet focused on vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and fruit had a significantly lower risk of heart disease, while plant-based eaters whose diets centered around refined grains and other highly processed foods had an increased risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-a-plant-based-diet-can-help-the-environment\">How A Plant-Based Diet Can Help The Environment<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Another benefit of plant-based diets? They\u2019re more sustainable. \u201cBy eliminating the high demand for animal-based products, a plant-based diet may support lower greenhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-do-we-fart\/\">gas<\/a> emissions,\u201d Vaca-Flores explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Animal agriculture takes a serious toll on our environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/clf.jhsph.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-01\/importance-of-reducing-animal-product-consumption-and-wasted-food-in-mitigating-catastrophic-climate-change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to research<\/a>, it accounts for nearly 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions\u2014more than all types of global transportation. Producing meat requires a lot of resources, too. Creating a single hamburger requires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watereducation.org\/post\/food-facts-how-much-water-does-it-take-produce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">616 gallons of water<\/a>. For reference, it takes 61 gallons of water to produce half a cup of tofu. Researchers agree that an immediate and substantial reduction in meat and dairy is necessary in order to mitigate climate change.
