Seaweed, the overarching name for all different species of marine algae, is having a major moment in the skincare world.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re likely already familiar with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/seaweed-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">health benefits of seaweed<\/a> varieties like nori, wakame, and dulse, which contain highly concentrated doses of nutrients like iodine, iron, calcium, potassium, antioxidants, and more. Just like these properties have health benefits, they also impart their perks on your skin when used topically.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeaweed is a superfood rich in vitamins, nutrients, and minerals,\u201d says Brooke Babcock, an esthetician and Senior Manager of Education at <a href=\"https:\/\/oseamalibu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSEA<\/a>. \u201cMost seaweed varieties offer unique benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the benefits of seaweed for skin, how to bring it into your skincare routine, and some of our favorite seaweed-containing products to try.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-seaweed-skincare\">What is seaweed skincare?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>You may be able to find a real seaweed wrap (read: long strips of actual seaweed!) on the menu at some spas, but you can get the benefits of seaweed for skin at home with products infused with seaweed.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe infuse our seaweeds in skin-loving carrier oils such as babassu, avocado, and macadamia oils,\u201d explains Babcock. \u201cTo create our Undaria Algae Body Oil, <em>Undaria pinnatifida <\/em>algae is soaked in barrels of botanical oil for up to six months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The power for seaweed skincare comes down to bioactive compounds found in seaweed, including phenolic compounds, polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fats, proteins, peptides, and amino acids that can be used as active ingredients, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31817709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to research<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-of-seaweed-for-skin\">Benefits of seaweed for skin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a1968a\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a1968a;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/benefits-of-seaweed-for-skin.jpg\" alt=\"seaweed in skincare\" class=\"wp-image-26745 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDifferent species of algae can provide a myriad of benefits, including anti-aging and moisturization,\u201d explains Babcock. \u201cFor example, <em>Undaria pinnatifida<\/em> algae, which is found in several of our products, including our best-selling Undaria Algae Body Oil and Seabiotic Water Cream, is rich in amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, nutrients, and vitamins. It replenishes the skin\u2019s moisture barrier and helps keep skin looking healthy by fighting free radicals,\u201d she says.<em> Laminaria saccharina<\/em>, another type of algae found in OSEA\u2019s Anti-Aging Sea Serum, is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In general, research has found a range of benefits of seaweed for skin, including:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anti-aging\">Anti-aging<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/why-are-free-radicals-bad\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Free radicals<\/a>, which are unstable molecules that damage cells, can contribute to aging skin via oxidative stress. Our bodies become less able to fight off oxidative stress as we age, but research shows seaweed may help. One study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0923181102000634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal of Dermatological Science<\/em><\/a> found that astaxanthin, an antioxidant derived from seaweed, had a protective effect on human cells against UVA radiation by reducing DNA damage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0963996912001214?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Further research<\/a> also found that different marine algae compounds can play an antioxidant role.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Brown seaweed also contains a compound that studies show <a href=\"https:\/\/ifst.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1046\/j.1365-2621.2002.00603.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inhibits a type of enzyme<\/a> that breaks down your body\u2019s natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hyaluronic-acid\/\">hyaluronic acid<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/hyaluronic-acid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Hyaluronic acid<\/a> helps skin retain moisture, but depletes with age, which can make wrinkles appear more pronounced and skin dry and less firm.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-firming\">Firming<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>In addition to maintaining skin\u2019s plumpness through hyaluronic acid, compounds in seaweed also <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31817709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promote collagen production and elastin synthesis<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/collagen-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Collagen<\/a> and elastin are both proteins responsible for the structure of your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hydrating\">Hydrating<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Polysaccharides found in seaweed can be particularly beneficial for moisturizing skin and helping to lock in moisture. In one study, polysaccharides from the seaweed <em>Saccharina japonica <\/em>were found to be even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0141813013000846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more effective at moisturizing<\/a> than hyaluronic acid. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23752034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another study<\/a> discovered an extract of <em>Laminaria japonica<\/em> improved skin moisture in study participants by forming a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brightening\">Brightening<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Several species of seaweed may inhibit an enzyme involved in the creation of melanin, the pigment that gives skin color, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20211676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research shows<\/a>. This means seaweed can be an all-star ingredient if you\u2019re looking to even out your skin tone or for a naturally brighter complexion free from dark spots, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation,\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reduces-acne-and-oil\">Reduces acne and oil<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Certain species of seaweed have antimicrobial properties that may fight acne-causing bacteria, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22167943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows research<\/a>. Compounds from the brown seaweed <em>Laminaria digitata <\/em>were even <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23752036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discovered to reduce sebum production<\/a>, meaning less greasy skin and a lower likelihood of acne.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-incorporate-seaweed-skincare-in-your-routine\">How to incorporate seaweed skincare in your routine<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Ready to try seaweed skincare for yourself? You\u2019re in luck: \u201cSeaweed pairs well with so many powerhouse ingredients, including vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid,\u201d says Babcock, so you can find seaweed in a range of products, from cleansers and moisturizers to serums and oils.
