It\u2019s also one of the top nutrients experts recommended for maintaining a healthy weight.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But what many people <em>don\u2019t<\/em> know about fiber is that it plays a crucial role in the body\u2019s natural detoxification process. The human body is very well-equipped with detoxification pathways, which are found in the liver, kidneys, GI tract, and skin, according to Rueven. In particular, the liver and kidneys do a lot of the heavy lifting. The liver excretes toxins into bile, which is then eliminated through your stool. The kidneys do a similar job and help filter toxins that will be excreted in your urine.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering where soluble fiber comes in\u2014we\u2019re getting there. The best way to support your body\u2019s ability to detox is through diet and lifestyle. But this doesn\u2019t require a flashy days\u2019 long detox or cleanse you might have seen advertised online, notes <a href=\"http:\/\/nutritionrewired.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Kenney<\/a>, a registered dietitian and founder of Nutrition Rewired. \u201cYou don\u2019t need a restrictive diet, juice cleanse, or expensive kit to detox. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/easy-ways-to-detox-your-body-naturally\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">Detoxification<\/a> is an everyday, slow, and gentle process that can be supported through a healthy diet, clean drinking water, movement, and a reduction in toxin exposure.\u201d Turns out, one major component of a healthy diet to support your body\u2019s detoxification systems is, you guessed it, soluble fiber.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-soluble-vs-insoluble-fiber-whats-the-difference\">Soluble vs. insoluble fiber: What\u2019s the difference?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There are two main types of fiber: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. The key difference between the two is how they interact with water.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-insoluble-fiber\">What is insoluble fiber?<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Insoluble fiber <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> dissolve in water. \u201cInsoluble fiber prevents constipation by absorbing water in the GI tract, bulking stools, and speeding up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/transit-time\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">transit time<\/a> in the GI tract,\u201d Rueven says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-soluble-fiber\">What is soluble fiber?\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Soluble fiber <em>does<\/em> dissolve in water. \u201cAs it dissolves, it forms a gel-like consistency which slows digestion and the absorption of certain nutrients,\u201d Rueven notes. Soluble fiber is a true multitasker. It feeds the good bacteria in the gut, lowers cholesterol by blocking absorption of dietary cholesterol, and slows digestion of carbohydrates, which helps keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-blood-sugar-affects-food-cravings\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">blood sugar<\/a> stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"aba697\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aba697;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/eating-soluble-fiber.jpg\" alt=\"couple cooking dinner\" class=\"wp-image-26499 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-benefits-of-soluble-fiber\">3 benefits of soluble fiber<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There are actually several ways soluble fiber aids in detox and helps us get rid of toxins. Here are just a few of the many benefits of soluble fiber.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-it-supports-a-healthy-gut\">1. It supports a healthy gut<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>First, because it feeds the good bacteria in the gut, soluble fiber benefits a healthy gut microbiome. According to Rueven, this influences many other organs within our bodies, including the detox heavyweights: the liver and kidneys. \u201cThe healthy bacteria in our gut protect gut barrier function and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/gut-health-and-immune-system\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">increase immunity within the GI tract<\/a>,\u201d Rueven explains. \u201cThis protects the liver and kidneys from bacteria and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-lifestyle\/\">inflammation<\/a>, and allows these organs to perform their detoxification functions optimally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Plus, your gut supplies blood to the liver and kidneys, so both of these organs are directly affected by the health of the gut microbiome, Rueven points out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-it-boosts-antioxidant-activity\">2. It Boosts antioxidant activity<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Soluble fiber also helps increase the activity of antioxidants to reduce your kidneys\u2019 burden of processing nitrogen, a common substance your body needs to get rid of, explains Abby Vichill, a registered dietitian and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwdfuel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FWDfuel<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s also involved in the production and flow of bile.\u201d We need bile to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and as mentioned earlier, it helps carry toxins and waste products out of the body.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-it-helps-with-hormonal-balance\">3. It helps with hormonal balance<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Fiber also plays a role in helping your body detoxify excess hormones. In particular, there\u2019s a clear link between fiber and estrogen. \u201cMuch of our body&#8217;s estrogen is metabolized in the gut. A diet low in fiber can cause estrogen levels to be higher, as fiber helps to clear excess estrogen out of the body,\u201d Vichill says. Both females and males can have excess estrogen, which is sometimes called estrogen dominance. In females, it often happens in midlife and in women with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5045492\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polycystic ovary syndrome<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/pcos\/\">PCOS<\/a>), and it can cause symptoms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/bloating\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">bloating<\/a>, irregular menstrual cycles, and breast tenderness. In men, higher-than-normal levels of estrogen are associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/vitex-for-fertility\/\">fertility<\/a> issues and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-69712-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">erectile dysfunction<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So how does it work? Fiber helps clear excess estrogen by reducing the amount that\u2019s absorbed in the colon. When it comes to soluble fiber in particular it helps us feel fuller longer because it slows digestion, Rueven says. For this reason, diets high in fiber are linked to healthy weight maintenance. Fat cells produce estrogen, so maintaining a healthy weight can help to lower excess estrogen levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-foods-high-in-soluble-fiber\">Foods high in soluble fiber<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to include more soluble fiber foods in your diet, you have lots of options to choose from.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Rueven and Vichill\u2019s top soluble
