From learning how to say \u2018No\u2019 to opening up to therapy, ahead you\u2019ll learn 10 ways to honor your mental health and yourself as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-1-focus-on-you-not-who-the-world-expects-you-to-be\">Lesson #1: Focus on \u2018you\u2019\u2014not who the world expects you to be.<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also have to focus on ourselves, because at the end of the day, we&#8217;re human, too,\u201d gymnast Simone Biles told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/07\/27\/simone-biles-withdrawal-aly-raisman-tokyo-olympics\/5394771001\/\">ESPN<\/a> following her exit from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team finals competition. \u201cSo, we have to protect our mind and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The quote, and Biles\u2019 decision, got lots of attention as athletes have historically not but mental health at the forefront, but<a href=\"https:\/\/rachelwrightnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> \u200b\u200bRachel Wright, LMFT,<\/a> a sex, relationship, and mental health therapist says the notion of focusing on yourself as opposed to the pressures of society has been around for decades. \u201cEven as early as 1955, Albert Ellis, Ph.D., talked about \u2018shoulds\u2019 being irrational beliefs that can create serious symptoms,\u201d she says. \u201cSimone is more right than she knows with this quote,\u201d explains Wright. \u201cWhen we operate in the world on shoulds, we don&#8217;t value our own instincts, experiences, thoughts, and emotions. We need to look inward just as much, if not more, than we look outward for guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Tuning in to your own thoughts and getting to know yourself better can help you make decisions that prioritize your mental wellbeing first.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-2-everyone-can-benefit-from-therapy\">Lesson #2: Everyone can benefit from therapy.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a09995\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a09995;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/in-office-therapy.jpg\" alt=\"woman at a therapy session\" class=\"wp-image-26113 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cFriendly reminder for anyone who needs to hear it: Therapy is never something to feel ashamed of,\u201d actress and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/lili-reinhart-opens-up-anxiety-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lili Reinhart<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/lili-reinhart-opens-up-anxiety-depression\">wrote<\/a> in a series of Instagram Stories. \u201cEveryone can benefit from seeing a therapist. Doesn&#8217;t matter how old or \u2018proud\u2019 you&#8217;re trying to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Wright seconds this. \u201cLiterally everyone can benefit,\u201d she says. \u201cI&#8217;m a therapist and I LOVE going to therapy. I learn more about myself, keep my depression and anxiety in check, continue to grow, and I know I have someone that will call me out if needed,\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a misconception that you need a reason to start therapy, but that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. As Wright explains, \u201cThe best time to go to therapy, though, is when there is no crisis going on so you can really build a relationship with your therapist. Then, when\/if something larger happens, you know you have a safe space to go process whatever you need to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-3-you-are-not-your-thoughts\">Lesson #3: You are not your thoughts.<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, depression is not sadness,\u201d actress Kristen Bell wrote in a 2016 piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4352130\/kristen-bell-frozen-depression-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>TIME Magazine<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not having a bad day and needing a hug. It gave me a complete and utter sense of isolation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-loneliness\/\">loneliness<\/a>. Its debilitation was all-consuming, and it shut down my mental circuit board. I felt worthless, like I had nothing to offer, like I was a failure. Now, after seeking help, I can see that those thoughts, of course, couldn\u2019t have been more wrong. It\u2019s important for me to be candid about this so people in a similar situation can realize that they are <em>not<\/em> worthless and that they do have something to offer. We all do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Wright can\u2019t emphasize the importance of Bell\u2019s statement enough. \u201cWhen we are clinically depressed or anxious, not having a rough day or two, our minds are literally out of balance, which can create some uncomfortable and sometimes painful and dangerous thoughts,\u201d she explains. \u201cIf we don&#8217;t realize that these thoughts are stemming from a mental disorder, we can think that they&#8217;re real and start acting in the world as such.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Learning to identify which thoughts are not serving you or aren\u2019t truly \u201cYou\u201d can break down this thinking. As Wright explains, therapy helps to identify what is going on and ongoing talk therapy can help to treat negative thought patterns. \u201cThis can actually rewire the brain and create new neural pathways for healthier and accurate thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-4-allow-yourself-to-feel-it-all\">Lesson #4: Allow yourself to feel it all.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a3a29e\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a3a29e;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/How-to-Achieve-Work-Life-Balance-Check-In-with-a-Journal-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"Woman writing in a journal with a mug of coffee by her window, discovering how to achieve work-life balance\" class=\"wp-image-19668 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve used sadness so constructively in the last two years,\u201d musician Lizzo divulged on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/By-OUQPBan6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a> in 2019. \u201cAfter working on being emotionally honest, I\u2019ve used sadness as a tool for gratitude. It\u2019s humbling and I\u2019m grateful that I\u2019m able to feel these emotions, because I know that because of the sadness, I\u2019m gonna be able to feel joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Wright stands by this idea and reminds us that we can\u2019t selectively numb emotions. \u201cIf we shut off the emotions that are more painful, or harder to feel, we also shut off the ones that feel yummy and that we so deeply crave, like pleasure, joy, and happiness,\u201d she explains. \u201cLizzo is explaining that she can feel more gratitude because she increased her capacity to feel\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/this-is-what-your-period-is-saying-about-your-health\/\">period<\/a>. In feeling her sadness, she is feeling more of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Finding a constructive way to help you channel your feelings may help, whether it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/best-self-care-planners\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">journaling<\/a>, painting, exercise, or another positive outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-5-dont-be-afraid-to-talk-about-it\">Lesson #5: Don\u2019t be afraid to talk about it.<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Singer and actor Demi Lovato told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2017\/02\/demi-lovato-on-boxing-eating-well-and-mental-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Cut<\/em><\/a> in 2017, \u201cThe advice I\u2019d give to somebody that\u2019s silently struggling is, you don\u2019t have to live that way.\u201d Lovato, who has been open about their struggles with mental health went on to say, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to struggle in silence. You can be un-silent. You can live well with a mental health condition, as long as you open up to somebody about it, because it\u2019s really important you share your experience with people so that you can get the help that you need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Speaking up can make a world of difference for your mental health, Wright agrees. Despite the fact that 1 in 5 Americans experiences some form of mental illness each year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/what-is-mental-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, \u201cWe think we&#8217;re the only ones that have ever felt suffering,\u201d says Wright. That, in turn, creates even more negative feelings and thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we share our struggles, though, we&#8217;re allowing the people who love us to show up for us and we&#8217;re showing other humans out there that suffering and struggling are a part of life,\u201d says Wright.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-6-its-okay-to-say-no\">Lesson #6: It\u2019s okay to say no.<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>OK, you\u2019ve heard this one before, but doesn\u2019t it sound all the more convincing coming from Mother Monster herself?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started to say no,\u201d Lady Gaga revealed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=so2nDTZQmCo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2015 Revolution Summit<\/a>. \u201c\u2018I\u2019m not doing that.\u2019 \u2018I don\u2019t want to do that.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m not taking that picture, I\u2019m not going to that event, I\u2019m not standing by that because that\u2019s not what I stand for.\u2019 And slowly but surely, I remembered who I am. And then you go home, and you look in the mirror, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Yes. I can go to bed with <em>you<\/em> every night. Because that person, I know that person.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to Wright, being a perpetual people pleaser is a surefire way to lose yourself in someone (or something) else. \u201cWhen we say yes or no clearly, we are respecting ourselves and our boundaries, limits, and preferences,\u201d she says, encouraging us all to learn the skill.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Setting boundaries can also help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/what-is-burnout\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">avoid burnout<\/a>, which is on the rise, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/lead\/preventing-employee-burnout-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey from Indeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-7-taking-time-off-doesnt-mean-failure\">Lesson #7: Taking time off doesn&#8217;t mean failure.<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>In an exclusive statement to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebrity\/selena-gomez-taking-a-break-after-lupus-complications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a><\/em> in 2019, singer and actress Selena Gomez left us with two important lessons. First, that mental health and physical health are intricately connected:<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs many of you know, around a year ago I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.people.com\/article\/selena-gomez-uncomfortable-lupus-illness-revival-same-old-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed that I have lupus<\/a>, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I\u2019ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks, and depression can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.people.com\/article\/selena-gomez-healthy-after-lupus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">side effects of lupus<\/a>, which can present their own challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>And also, that it&#8217;s OK to slow down, saying: \u201cI want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Having the courage to stake this stance is huge, but so necessary Wright says. \u201cOur society is <em>so<\/em> productivity-focused that this has to be a discussion. Resting is just as important as the part where you&#8217;re <em>doing<\/em>. Similar to how communication is made up of both talking and listening\u2014existing as a human is made up of both doing and being,\u201d she explains. \u201cAfter all, we&#8217;re human <em>beings<\/em>, not human <em>doings<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-8-check-in-on-your-friends\">Lesson #8: Check in on your friends.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"928883\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #928883;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/calling-a-friend.jpg\" alt=\"man video calling woman\" class=\"wp-image-26112 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In her now-infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/25\/opinion\/meghan-markle-miscarriage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> op-ed, Meghan Markle challenged us all to \u201ccommit to asking others, \u2018Are you okay?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She wrote, \u201cAs much as we may disagree, as physically distanced as we may be, the truth is that we are more connected than ever because of all we have individually and collectively endured this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The practice of asking others how they\u2019re <em>really<\/em> doing is helpful both in the moment and as a way to normalize conversations about mental and emotional wellbeing, whether at work or with friends and family. Even the seemingly strongest people you know may need a shoulder to lean on at times.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHuman beings are pack animals and we have not evolved out of that mentality, psychologically,\u201d Wright says, noting why staying in touch is so important. \u201cMental illnesses like anxiety and depression, among others, have a symptom of isolation and loneliness.
