Plastics aren\u2019t biodegradable, meaning that virtually all plastic ever manufactured <a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/3\/7\/e1700782.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still exists today<\/a> in some form\u2014much of it in the form of pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Continuous production of virgin plastic paired with the growing accumulation of these materials has consequences that compound over time\u2014which is why it\u2019s essential to learn more about the issue and take action from there.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-plastic-pollution-in-the-ocean-matters\">Why Plastic Pollution in the Ocean Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one thing to know that plastic pollution in the ocean is a serious issue\u2014but it\u2019s another to face the actual stats behind the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Here are a few facts and figures that may surprise you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The ocean covers 71 percent of the earth\u2019s surface and holds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/special-topic\/water-science-school\/science\/how-much-water-there-earth?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects\">over 96 percent<\/a> of its water supply. Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanconservancy.org\/trash-free-seas\/plastics-in-the-ocean\/\">8 million metric tons<\/a> of plastic enter the ocean each year, which accounts for a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/backend.orbit.dtu.dk\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/118180844\/Lassen_et_al._2015.pdf\">80 percent of marine litter<\/a> that threatens the vitality and survival of oceanic species.<\/li><li>When plastic is introduced to the natural environment, instead of biodegrading it photodegrades, or breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces\u2014even smaller than can be seen with the naked eye. These microplastics then end up in the air, soil, and even our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19440049.2019.1583381\">water supply, food, and bodies<\/a>.<\/li><li>When microplastics accumulate in the body, scientists believe they may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7068600\/\">contribute to health risks<\/a> such as endocrine disruption and hormonal imbalance, risks for vital organs and the nervous system, compromised immune function, reproductive issues, and more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>As we can see, the flow of plastic pollution as it exists today is unsustainable as it creates a domino effect that endangers the environment, global food and water supply, and our very own health. According to a 2020 report, the amount of plastic pollution in the ocean is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/plastic-trash-in-seas-will-nearly-triple-by-2040-if-nothing-done\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">triple by 2040<\/a> if drastic action isn\u2019t taken.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The good news is that saving our ocean and reducing the plastic pollution problem isn\u2019t only possible, but is within reach if we take action now. Organizations and individuals alike have the power to make a difference by making widespread changes that can collectively yield major results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b2b07a\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b2b07a;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HUM-ocean-bound-plastic-bottle-The-Wellnest-by-HUM-Nutrition.jpg\" alt=\"HUM Gut Instinct probiotic in a sustainable ocean-bound plastic bottle\" class=\"wp-image-25932 not-transparent\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hums-commitment-to-reduce-plastic-pollution\">HUM\u2019s Commitment to Reduce Plastic Pollution<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>With our transition to using only ocean-bound plastic packaging, our short-term goal is to save the equivalent of 6 million bottles from pollution by year\u2019s end. As of August 2021, we\u2019re pleased to report that we\u2019ve saved 3,810,773 bottles and are on track to reach this milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Then, by 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/sustainability\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\">we aim to<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>prevent the equivalent of 50 million+ water bottles from entering the ocean<\/li><li>phase out the use of virgin plastics and eliminate single-use plastic in our supply chain entirely<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Ocean-bound plastic is found within 30 miles of shorelines that lack formal recycling infrastructure, and is thus at high risk of polluting the ocean. Simply put, local residents are employed to collect this waste, which then undergoes a rigorous upcycling process to create raw materials. The result: recyclable ocean-bound plastic bottles that reduce the need to produce virgin plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since we know that the majority of produced plastic remains in the ecosystem, our transition to use only ocean-bound plastic reduces our footprint by using recycled materials instead of new plastic in our packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, we\u2019re excited to partner with Surfrider Foundation to take our commitment and sustainability goals to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-were-partnering-with-surfrider\">Why We\u2019re Partnering with Surfrider<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Given our mutual interest in protecting the ocean from plastic pollution, it was only natural to join forces with the Surfrider Foundation to advance those common goals.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Surfrider\u2019s national, grassroots network engages volunteers in communities across the country through beach cleanups, water testing, and other programs and events to help educate the public and ultimately drive policy change to protect our natural resources for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cumulative impact made possible by Surfrider\u2019s activist network represents the power that individuals have to create change for the better,\u201d shares Mary Herbranson, Partnerships Manager at Surfrider. \u201cHUM\u2019s philosophy of empowering individuals to \u2018Start from Within\u2019 is an effective tool to help us all consider and understand our own footprint on the environment and the ways in which we can tread lighter. Reduce Your Use of Single-Use Plastic<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>There are countless ways to integrate this tip into your daily life. Although they\u2019re simple, know that these habits have the potential to generate immense impact over time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Here are some of our go-to tips to limit the use of single-use plastic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Try bringing your own reusable shopping bags on your grocery hauls and other shopping trips.<\/li><li>When possible, shop for unpackaged produce and products in glass or aluminum packages versus plastic ones. You can even purchase reusable bags for produce to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies. The same goes for collecting dry items from bulk bins. (Bonus: You\u2019ll likely even save money in the process!)<\/li><li>Shop at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/prosperity-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local farmers market<\/a> to simultaneously reduce your plastic and carbon footprint.<\/li><li>Opt for a reusable water bottle to hydrate daily. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/is-tap-water-safe-to-drink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Invest in a tap water filter<\/a> to drink clean water without having to purchase single-use bottles.<\/li><li>If possible, skip plastic straws or buy reusable ones.<\/li><li>Take inventory of the plastic in your home, such as single-use bags, plastic wrap, and other items. Replace them with reusable, washable, and non-plastic alternatives wherever possible.<\/li><li>Support brands that take eco-friendly initiatives and voice your support for their actions.
