To facilitate this, the mother\u2019s body undergoes many hormonal changes. Estrogen prolongs the growth phase of hair during pregnancy. Interestingly, there was no difference in the growth <em>rate<\/em> of nails\u2014only nail thickness. This indicates that since pregnancy hormones impact nail thickness, they may similarly impact hair thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Overall, research doesn&#8217;t support the idea that prenatals will help your hair grow. If you&#8217;re not pregnant, there are a few things to consider before taking a prenatal vitamin for hair growth.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The main concern with taking a prenatal when you aren\u2019t pregnant (or planning to be) is iron toxicity. Nonpregnant women need 18 milligrams of iron per day, compared to pregnant women who need 27 milligrams.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Taking too much iron daily over a long period of time can lead to symptoms such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>stomach pain<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/how-to-relieve-constipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constipation<\/a><\/li><li>liver complications<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>However, some prenatals don&#8217;t contain any iron at all. (However, drinking lots of water and taking your supplement with a meal may mitigate this risk.)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Folic acid is a similar case; though it\u2019s an integral nutrient to conception and pregnancy, it\u2019s not advised to take much more than the upper limit, which is about 1,000 milligrams a day for adults (the recommended daily intake for pregnancy is 600 milligrams and 400 milligrams for all other adults). Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6132377\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a> imply that taking well over the daily upper limit of folate could increase the risk for certain cancers. As long as you\u2019re not taking double or triple the recommended amount, it shouldn\u2019t have major detrimental effects on your health. That said, you\u2019ll generally require a bit less folic acid outside of pregnancy, and a prenatal vitamin might not be necessary if you\u2019re not pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-foods-that-help-hair-growth\">Foods That Help Hair Growth<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>A diet that promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails will include fruits, vegetables, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humnutrition.com\/blog\/healthy-fats-list\/\">healthy fats<\/a> while limiting processed foods.
